WINTER SHOWS Seems bizarre that last November we had snow and ice on the ground, whilst this year we left the yard with flowers in bloom and lush green grass everywhere. Even the chickens have had a spurt of enthusiasm and started laying again! Heniarth Gloriumptious (left by Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum-Yum) was the last born of the three fillies we kept in 2010, so following in the footsteps of Heniarth Chiff-Chaff and Heniarth Yesterday she made it into the show ring as a yearling - but only just before the year was out! We're really pleased with these young fillies by Turbo - he seems to be doing the job that he was purchased for! It wasn't until November that she made her first public appearances with a third at the Blaenavon Foal & Youngstock Show, and then a third at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair turning the tables on those that had stood above her at Blaenavon! The first three yearling fillies at the Winter Fair were all grand-daughters of Pendock Legend - the second place being Rod Lewis' Cwm-Meudwy Welsh Song by Heniarth Yarra Glen, not bad going when Rod won the summer Royal Welsh with another Yarra Glen filly, Cwm-Meudwy Lili Lon. Of course we put it all down to the strength of Sunwillow Yasmin!! (though admittedly Nerwyn Cadno, Pendock Legend and Bengad Dogberry have helped!) |

SCOTTISH WELSH PONY & COB ASSOCIATION We headed north at the beginning of November to judge at the Scottish Association Winter Show, just outside Glasgow. After a long eight hour drive the venue, The Ingliston Country Club and Equestrian Centre was something to behold, the like of which we have never seen in Wales! Ironically the Supreme Led Champion went to Cadlan Valley Georgie Boy, bred locally to us here in West Wales, with the Reserve Supreme going to Waxwing Dick Turpin who had travelled some four hours south to attend! I cannot recall the names of the ridden Supremes other than the Reserve Supreme Cob was by Llanarth Solo, who himself first graced the show-rings with Richard - many moons ago! Many thanks for the Masons of Tullibardine, our co-judges and of course to the committee. |

| Goodbye
Milligan - Adjö Day one of November saw us say "cheerio" to Mr.Milligan who left on the first leg of his return trip to Sweden, courtesy of Owen Jones, Nebo Stud. It was great to have Milligan back in Wales this year and the photo right shows how we will best remember him - happily sharing in the conversation in the lorry at a show - and letting out a huge sigh of boredom if it was all getting too much and there was nothing to steal off the countertop in front of the grooms door! We look forward to his foals next year with great anticipation - and good luck to those that also took the opportunity to use him when he was back in the UK. Thank you Inger and Johann - look out "Millis", they'll have you back doing dressage and jumping quicker than you can sing "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau"!! |

JUMP FOR JOY As we reported in the Spring Heniarth Yarra Glen (Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) had an huge influence during his short stay in Sweden; "At the recent Swedish Stallion grading the Cwm-Meudwy Studs Heniarth Yarra Glen was awarded an A grade certificate based on the quality and success of his stock that he sired when he was resident in the country. Mostly it takes about ten years for a stallion to get grade A so what was so exceptional for Yarra is that he got it from only two years with offspring still now only five years. He had only 28 sons and daughters all together." Now recently a gelding son has received further honours at the SwedishvNational Finals for ponies of all breeds. Five year old Ekbäckens Superman (photo left x Ekbäckens Saga) won the final for 5 year old ponies in show jumping. Many congratulations to his breeder Inger Becker and his owners and riders. What a year for Yarra, all this Swedish success, a W.P.C.S. medal and producing a Royal Welsh winner too?! |

BRITISH SHOW PONY
SOCIETY "HERITAGE" CHAMPIONSHIPS The Heritage championships are solely for Mountain and Moorland ponies and continuing here fine form and looking as good, if not better than ever, Heniarth Cupcake had a great show, including a second and a seventh in the novice working hunter pony ring. However, partnered by Tristan she became Blue Riband Mini Reserve Champion. This division is judged over two days. Day one see's two judges select the top six ponies to go through to complete a "freestyle" show the following day under two fresh judges and a "guest" judge. Both days marks are combined to find the ultimate winner. The guest judge here was top show horse rider Katie Jerram and Tris scored top of the freestyle marks by executing a beautiful one handed trot which was balanced and even. Then in the championship he pulled off a one handed canter circle as he had seen top hunter/hack rider Robert Walker do at the Horse of the Year Show. What a star?! the consummate showman in the making - and of course Cupcake had her ears pricked all the way around the arena! |

RETURN TO BENGAD You may remember that we purchased the colt foal Bengad Desert Sage last year in an attempt to secure some of those lovely, quality Bengad bloodlines. Unfortunately that didn't work out and he has gone on to become an already much loved potential ridden pony. So, having spied a pretty young filly at Bengad last year we were lucky enough to be able to purchase her recently; the last of the young ponies at Bengad today. Her name is Bengad Lilly. She too is a daughter of Bengad Dogberry and out of a mare we have coveted since seeing her as a yearling some fifteen years ago, Bengad Lady Fern (Bengad Walnut x Bengad Lavender), a full sister to Bengad Leonotis, who we purchased as a foal and has gone on to great success as a ridden pony. Pictured left on her first day out here at Heniarth, at two years of age, she was a later born foal, so we'll give her time to mature and who knows - may be "Lilly" will have her "Day"!!!! |

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW 2011 It is of course a great achievement to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show though even better when all the plans come to fruition and the ultimate appearance goes well and ideally successfully! Heniarth Mr.Milligan (above) stepped into the UK show ring for the last time and tried his best to be pulled forward in eighth place. We of course consider him to be #1 on all accounts and he proved that even more to us by siring Heniarth Dilyscious (left) who stood a hugely creditable 3rd place having the joint top conformation score with only one point separating the top three animals! Heniarth Li'l Peach by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr went very well for Shannon Meers though sadly was a "fidget" in front of the judge so failed to get a top ten placing. |

The
Open ridden Section A class was a great result
for our connections. Both the first and second
prizewinners were conceived here at Heniarth out
of the great little mare, Brynodyn Scarlet. The
winner here was Brynodyn Savannah (left) by
Heniarth Quinnel (Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow
Quest) who was himself National ridden champion
this summer. Savannah is owned and bred by Keith
and Ann Hughes, whilst being produced by Team
Courtway. Her qualifying jockey was Eleri
Marshalsay, though partnering her at HOYS was
Lucy Morris who kept her cool and went one
further by collecting the Reserve Overall title.
Second in the class was the Landon Family's
Brynodyn Sirius by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr,
partnered by Katie Roberts. All the ponies
called forward in the final line-up were grey
except for Heniarth Cupcake by Heniarth Quip who
stood sixth having received the second highest
ride mark for eleven year old Tristan Chandler.
All the combinations looked superb and were a
credit to everybody involved. |

FAYRE OAKS 2011 Nothing to sell and nothing to buy this year - however rumour has it that we did in fact buy another high priced pony. This is definitely not the case! For several years we have heard back that we bought "so and so" when we hadn't at all. I think we have figured out now that during the High Flyer Sale, fellow auctioneer Richard Bottrell stands on the balcony to spot bids being placed "up in the Gods". If one of those is successful Terry Court on the rostrum announces it as "Richards bidder". It seems some must mistake this as "Richard Miller"!! Also, anybody that knows us, knows that it is Meirion who is the one that has a "penchant" for waving his bidders number in the air! However it was great to see Malmswood Clarissa by the Heniarth Quip son, Sunwillow Jubilee make |

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN This Autumn has seen the return of two favourites in the shape of Heniarth Yeats (above left, Heniarth Mr Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) and of course Heniarth Quip (above right, Dukes Hill Magnum x Sunwillow Quest). Four year old Yeats has been in Holland at Rhode Thielen's Vennebos Stud since he stood second at the Royal Welsh as a yearling and Quip has spent the last three seasons in the East of England at Paul and Margaret Brightwell's Cosford Stud. At sixteen, Quip has been a consistently good stock getter and has had a great opportunity to visit with mares in another part of the country. However, never being one to let the grass grow under his hooves - Quip is off to stand at Helen Myers Rosmarche Stud where we know he will be much appreciated. Many thanks to both studs for taking such good care of the boys - we hope they will follow their future careers with interest. |

MUST BUY The recently published "History of the British Riding Pony" by Tom Best is a fantastic record of the development of these beautiful animals. Thorough research together with anecdotal observations from many involved in the breed makes for an interesting read - enhanced by some excellent photographs, many of which are in print for the first time. However it was with great surprise and some honour that Chapter XIV, titled "Coming of Age" is led with a photo of Pendley Gold Cup on the day that Richard awarded him the championship at Royal Melbourne Show in 1997 (?) after two hot days of assessing over 400 riding ponies. |

TALKING OF THINGS AUSTRALIAN... It was great to finally meet Tina Taylor of the Nattai River Stud who is the daughter of the late Lady Creswick of the Nattai Stud when she visited this summer with husband David (right). Having twice had the pleasure of visiting her property Allanvale, near Melbourne when Lady Creswick was alive it was long overdue to meet Tina who is carrying on her mothers work with such success - a look at the extensive website is an education in the top ponies in Australian history. To celebrate 100 years of the Nattai story Tina donated a special prize of a framed image of Greylight, accompanied by a sash in the studs pink and black colours. These were on offer at the Royal Welsh and the International Show to the champion Mountain Pony. We came very close to winning one when Heniarth Yum-Yum was pulled forward as Reserve! Photo above shows Lady Creswick receiving the View Bank Trophy for the Champion at the Victorian All-Welsh Shows from Mary de Crespigny, with stud groom Gary Le Brocq with Nattai Ceiliog by Coed Coch Bari. |

BON VOYAGE ADAGIO
- hitting the headlines on both sides of the
Channel It was a sad day when we bid "au revoir" to Adagio de l'Aurore as he made his way home to France. He is such a lovely natured person and a joy to have around. It was an honour and a pleasure to have him here at Heniarth as a representative from Wood-Winds first crop of foals - who knows' he may be back in Wales one day - thank you Ingrid for breeding such a great colt that France can be proud of. |

YARRA ENDS ON A HIGH
Heniarth Yarra Glen (Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) ended his season on a high by taking the Championship and WPCS Bronze Medal at the Avon & Borders Association Show before returning home to Cwm-Meudwy , having raised his profile tremendously in the hands of the Tryfel Show Team. Meanwhile his son Waxwing Dick Turpin, (left) who he sired during his time in Scotland, had a great day at the Scottish WPCA northern bronze medal rosette show. He was adult champion then overall sec A champion and bronze medal rosette winner as well as winning the members class and going members champion. Just to top it off was in-hand adult reserve overall champion for owner Moira Leggat of the Thistleview Stud. |
PEMBROKESHIRE COUNTY .........LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON The "girls" did us proud at our last show of the season when Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah (below, by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin) won her class and then took the Championship and WPCS Silver medal award and her filly foal Heniarth Shh by Colne Turbo was second. Then over in the Section B ring Heniarth Ting-a-Ling ( below right, by Lemonshill Top Note x Eyarth Windflower) reclaimed her form to again take the Championship and our second WPCS Silver medal of the day. Not content with that in the Overall Welsh Championship, Yippee impressed John Jones, Nantdywyll, sufficiently enough to collect the overall title and in doing so paid us the biggest honour when he likened her to the great Coed Coch Anwyled - a huge compliment indeed. We headed back on the third day of the show to appear in the shows first ever Cuddy Horse of the Year Show qualifier but unluckily or luckily, we failed to impress the judge - so now it's all down to Heniarth Mr.Milligan to fly the in-hand flag for us at the Horse of the Year Show in October.Congratulations to Rosemary,Ken and Tim on qualifying Smalland Dream Again for HOYS. |
IRISH WELSH PONY AND COB SOCIETY SUMMER
SHOW Amongst all these UK shows I crossed the Irish sea to judge in Kilkenny. I'm not really sure who or what I judged but David Marshall’s Nantcol Sir Galahad, ridden by a confidant young Tom Kiely Marshall (above) stood out as a very quality little pony for myself and Gillian Sells (Priestwood Stud) in her ring and obviously went home with a stash of awards. A brief but enjoyable visit. Richard |

NATIONAL PONY
SOCIETY SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS In between the Royal Welsh and the International we headed off to the NPS Championships at Malvern where Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah dodged the showers to come away with the Reserve Championship and little Heniarth Shh by Colne Turbo won the foal class. It was a pity for the NPS that the WPCS decided to withhold awarding medals at this most prestigious show. After all, if there hadn't originally been a National Pony Society there would not have been born a Welsh Pony and Cob Society, so one would have hoped that they could support each other a little better! Young Jade John took the Reserve Champion Lead Rein sash in the Micor Demolition final with Heniarth Davey Crockett (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Baledon Miss Dior) gaining many admirers in doing so. Sadly with showing and judging we were too busy to get the camera out! Congratulations to Jill and Kitty at Glebedale on winning the Lord Arthur Cecil trophy for the best Mountain and Moorland Brood mare with Glebedale Savannah. |
![]() KASTANJEHOF CONFETTI (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) full sister to Heniarth Cupcake. Second in her class and the highest award for conformation, 'voorlopig keur', at the Dutch National Show, property of Janneke and Egbert-Jan Schilthuis and family. |

WELSH & WELSH
PART-BRED NATIONAL SHOW Heniarth Mr.Milligan (left) was back to his usual polite self and Thomas gave him a lovely ride and a nice controlled "lengthening" to stand fourth in the Horse of the Year Show ridden qualifier class behind some ultra experienced riders, proving that he can in fact still do it! Many thanks to all at Menai for coming on board with our vision of letting Milligan have one last display in the UK ridden classes before he returns to Sweden. Both his owner Inger Becker and ourselves were very proud of what he and Thomas had achieved in a short space of time - I'm sure if we had planned a lengthy campaign he would have equalled his ridden successes of six years ago - however it was just great to see him out there again - one last time! Greater things were to come when Heniarth Yum Yum (Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Yasmin) stood Brightwells Reserve National Champion with Mr.Milligan standing third out of an impressive ring full of champions from throughout the country that had qualified - gaining us a cheque of £200 which was very welcome - however Katie Parry pulled off an even more lucrative win in the Brynseion Ridden Section A Championship to head the final with Stuart & Annie Franklins Heniarth Quinnel (below, Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Quest) gaining herself £250 in doing so! The National Show was a pleasure to attend, with flags flying in the breeze, background music playing all day and rings close to hand - a very enjoyable day out. |

THE W.P.C.S.INTERNATIONAL We had planned earlier in the year to give Mr.Milligan one last "hurrah" under saddle at the International Show as a surprise for Inger his owner. Following on, as we always have, in believing these ponies are more suited for child riders as opposed to small adults, we enlisted thirteen year old Thomas Jones (Menai/Friarly)to ride him for us. With the help of Gemma Paxford we were able to get started on him after the Royal Welsh and Milligan soon picked up what was required, despite not having been ridden for six months or more. The only slight niggle was that he was being a bit lazy, but the transitions were excellent so off we went on the first morning of the show to present him under saddle. All was going well until the class went into canter and suddenly Milligan thought he was at the Olympics already and took poor Thomas on a few laps of "extended canter" which resulted in him having to be excused from the class! Nobody was hurt, more shocked at Milligan's new found exuberance - so back to the drawing board on that front! The first class of the following day saw Adagio de l'Aurore stand fourth below three colts that he'd managed to defeat all season, perhaps the Royal Welsh show ground is not his luckiest venue? Then Heniarth Ting-a-Ling was pulled an insultingly low twelfth out of twelve in the two year old filly class - so perhaps it was not the venue after all? She eventually ended up fifth, sadly at the expense of several other high profile ponies that had then been dropped to make the whole class somewhat of a shambles in our eyes. So now thoroughly depressed, we ventured into the huge barren section A class with Heniarth Yum Yum (below) and after a good drenching we won the class! Mr.Milligan found some of his form back to stand second to Lacy Buzbee in the stallion class, who then went on to be Champion - but to our delight Yum Yum was pulled forward as Reserve International Mountain Pony Champion. So a great result to end what was a rather frustrating show for us! (also see Rhoson page) |

ROYAL WELSH 2011 The Royal Welsh this year was full of it's usual up's and downs though the fact that we came home with rosettes on each of the animals we showed was a good result - however the only red one we gained this year was with Meirion's mother, Glenys' artwork in the Merched y Wawr (Womans Institute) section. Good for her! It was no surprise that the Eyarth Rio colt, Paddock Rio, would be the preferred type in the yearling colt class for David Jones of the Telynau Stud - it was just a pity that in bringing him up to win from an initial third place pull in meant that Adagio (below) was dropped a place in the line up to stand third. The first time he had ever been dropped a place; first time he had been placed third and the first time Paddock Rio had stood above him in a class but nevertheless a great result for the French bred colt and well done Rio! Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah (below right) stood above some of the current top show winning mares in the country to stand third in the Senior Brood mares and Heniarth Mr.Milligan (right) took the same slot in the senior stallions, ending his lifetime Royal Welsh career on three wins and one third - so very pleasing. Also pleasing was to see Cwm-Meudwy Lili Lon by Heniarth Yarra Glen, who had himself been fifth in the senior stallion class, lead the yearling fillies for owner/breeder Rod Lewis and Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell won the Best Ridden Section A and ended up Reserve Overall Champion ridden by Lucy Morris, therefore keeping a Heniarth link to the engraving of the Velvet Challenge Trophy. Have to say on a plus note that the main ring re-seeding was a huge success, however, as a down side, I was always told that your animal had to be 110% to be shown at the Royal Welsh - so it was disappointing and frustrating to see animals presenting and gathering prizes that in our opinion didn't even reach the high 80%! Hopefully that's not a sign of the times? (also see Rhoson page) |

AND SHE'S DONE IT
AGAIN ...................... Talk about "being on a roll"; young Anya and Dilyscious (right) travelled some three hundred miles south to attend their first ever Royal International Horse Show and not only did they win their class, they also took the B.S.P.S. Mini Heritage Championship - the stuff that dreams are made of.......... even more so for us as Tristan and Heniarth Cupcake (below) took second in the First Ridden with Shannon and Heniarth Li'l Peach fifth in her first season under saddle. ![]() |

| SHE'S BEEN AND DONE IT................... Fantastic news from the National Pony Society Area 25 Show was that Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) has qualified as a Lead Rein for the Horse of the Year Show with top marks for ride and conformation on her way to lifting the shows Mini Championship!!! A great achievement for Sally, Anoushka and Anya Potter Frith of the Whisperdale stud who have made this little mare into the superstar that she is. We can't thank them enough! Interestingly enough the Reserve here and winner of the First Ridden was Dukes Hill Mini Mutters, a double granddaughter of Sunwillow Mutters, the dam of Mr.Milligan. The video above was taken and posted by Jade Neal at the Great Yorkshire. Dilys was second here, only beaten by Rosmarche Heather by Heniarth Quip, therefore a great grand-daughter of Mutters (Revel Playsome x Sunwillow Fusshorn by Coed Coch Norman) |

TO
BELGUIM WITH LOVE.......... We have to commend Belgium breeder and driving exponent Andre Mesure, pictured right with a young driver, (www.harasdesilly.com ) on his choice of stallions for 2011. Rather than using what was available on the Continent he has brought five mares to the UK - two to be covered by Lemonshill Top Note at Rotherwood and three to visit his son, Heniarth Wood-Wind, here at Heniarth. The mares Polaris Celandine (grey pictured right) and Violet du Silly, together with Dawn de Silly both by Eyarth Tom Tom will be travelling home after the Royal Welsh in foal to Wood-Wind. A major expedition indeed, but one we hope will pay off generously in the long run. We have made up a gallery below of various 2011 foals by Wood-Wind that we have received photos of with links to their breeders - hopefully we will be able to report more news from each as they develop; |

NORTHLEACH SHOW It's been a few years since we attended Northleach Show in Cirencester Park, though it was good to catch up with some familiar and loyal friends of the show. Commentator Eirwen Jenkins and show ground manager Trevor Lane were helping out at the show when Richard was on the committee some twenty five plus years ago when the event was held at Stowell Park. We took the two yearlings, Adagio de l'Aurore (above) for Ingrid Delaitre and Heniarth Yesterday. Yesterday made a lovely entrance to the ring, showing off her best assets, to then realise we were in the two year old colt class, one head of the yearling fillies! I blame the mistake on the "lingering man flu" myself, so by the time she had waited for her class, she had lost her sparkle, though still stood third, despite the judge handing me the ribbon with the words, "she's half asleep!" Adagio had a walk over in his class which was disappointing, however he then stood Youngstock Champion, with Longstone Regal Empress by Rhoson Diego as reserve, before standing Reserve Overall to Millcroft Dahlia for the silver medal. Later that day Adagio scored a major victory by lifting the Overall Youngstock Championship of the Show, whilst Millcroft Dahlia took the Supreme In-Hand Championship signifying the strength of the Section B's forward. Even more satisfying was to see Sarum Rembrandt by Heniarth Quinnell winning his Picton Novice qualifier ridden class on his second outing with Heidi Bennett of the Popsters Stud whilst Lucy Morris accompanied Keith and Ann Hughes' Brynodyn Savannah (above right), again by Heniarth Quinnell to take the Supreme Ridden Champion of the Show - a fantastic result for Heniarth bloodlines but also for the fabulous Brynodyn Scarlet who was the dam of last years ridden Supreme, Brynodyn Sirius by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr. |

REGIONALSCHAU
RHEINLAND, GERMANY Abandoning Meirion to his sick bed I had an appointment to judge at the I G Welsh regional show in Rheinland alongside Beate Reipen of the Three B's Stud now based in Llandysul, Wales, but of course originating from Germany. So there was no better way to travel to a different country than with a genuine "local" so we ventured together through the Channel tunnel, passing through France, then Belgium until we arrived in Germany some nine hours later. It was a pleasure to meet the remaining "Two B's" in Beate's mother, Barbara and sister Birgit as well as her father Karl who was back in Germany from New Zealand. A fantastic tour of Cologne the following day, several shopping expeditions, a confrontation with a pork knuckle in a beer house on the side of the river Rhine, and a small gathering of enthusiasts to view my Powerpoint presentation on showing that evening, set me in good stead to focus on the job in hand the following day. Luckily the event was staged indoors as the day started damp but soon burnt off to become very humid with B's, C's and D's being selected by myself, with Beate sorting the A's and Part-Breds. Exhibitors seemed enthusiastic, with the animals generally very well turned out and well shown. The atmosphere seemed relaxed with the eventual Supreme Champion handler, Michael Voihs getting doused in victory champagne, in best Formula 1 fashion, by fellow competitors at the end of a long day! Sadly, on my return I succumbed to the same "man flu"; took to my sick bed like I haven't done since I was a child - and there was me thinking Mei was faking it!!! Richard |

SCOTLAND THE BRAVE As we travelled back home south, all eyes looked north to the Royal Highland Show and we were delighted to hear that the young stallion, Waxwing Dick Turpin (picture left) by Heniarth Yarra Glen, stood second in the stallion class and turned quite a few heads in doing so for owner Moira Leggat of www.thistleviewstud.webs.com Yarra Glen (Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) spent his two year old year at the Waxwing Stud where he sired the Horse of the Year Show qualifying Lead Rein, Waxwing Milk Tray, the South African exported colt, Waxwing Talisman and the top up and coming Roseisle Witches Glen for John and Lindsay Milligan. We only recently realised that Dick Turpin, known at home as "Robbie" existed, tucked away in Aberdeen, so it is great to see him out and about and doing so well. |

CHESHIRE COUNTY
SHOW To attend one of the most prestigious Welsh breed shows on the circuit means we have to get up at "silly o' clock" to travel the five hours to reach Cheshire - why they don't have stabling on the show ground we shall never know? An early morning surprise was seeing Ingrid bouncing up the ramp of the lorry at 6a.m. having travelled through the night from Normandy made our efforts seem quite lightweight! It was great for her then that her homebred Adagio de l'Aurore by Heniarth Wood-Wind (picture below) continued his winning ways by taking a good yearling colt class. Heniarth Yesterday (picture right, Colne Turbo x Sunwillow Yasmin) made her show ring debut, making a storming entrance to the ring to stand top of a class of eighteen fillies, then finally taking the reserve youngstock rosette too. Better still she was fantastically behaved on and off the lorry for her first trip away from home - so we hope that in time she will make a great brood mare for us to show - nothing like advance planning! Heniarth Beaudacious (pictured below right, Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum Yum) was also on his seasonal debut for John and Linda Harries of the Hope Stud. After much deliberation he stood second in the two year old colt class, for a minute we thought the judge might switch them over, but second was good too - and again a big learning curve for a colt whose best is yet to come. |

THREE COUNTIES
SHOW We always enjoy attending this show with it's spacious rings and well laid out showground, however after recent "improvements" to the show ground it wasn't as exhibitor friendly as other years if you were showing off the lorry. Those teething problems were soon put aside though when Heniarth Chiff-Chaff (pictured right, Colne Turbo x Heniarth Quail) won a good class of yearling fillies; Heniarth Yum-Yum (picture below) stood second in the barren mares to Rosmarche Holly Hock by Heniarth Quip; Sunwillow Roscoe out of Heniarth Yababdabadoo stood second with Liesel Burt for the Dalgangle Stud, Australia; Heniarth Yarra Glen ( picture below right,Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) gave an outstanding show to stand second in the stallion class and the eventual champion for the second year running was the Heniarth Quip daughter Tryfel Dion who gave her usual spirited show with Michael Cobley. Rosmarche Holly Sprig, full brother to Holly Hock by Quip of course stood second in a large HOYS open ridden class and then we were able to see Heniarth Cupcake and Heniarth Li'l Peach performing in the First Ridden class, where the judging can only be described as "random" but nevertheless they both gave their usual consistent shows and didn't get too wet in the process. A good day had by all. |

YEATS AT ASCOT When we named Heniarth Yeats we chose the name as it began with "Y", for a Sunwillow Yasmin offspring and because of the great poet. We soon realised that there was an exciting racehorse named Yeats (left) who went on to be the only horse to win five Ascot Gold Cups. This week HM The Queen unveiled a plus 10% size bronze of Yeats the racehorse in the Ascot paddocks - just a bit spooky as he's striking a very similar pose to Heniarth Yeats (right) as a yearling. Must be something in the name? |

| STOP PRESS - Heniarth Li'l Peach (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Nerwyn Linda) has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show at the Derbyshire Festival of the Horse. Second in the class was Heniarth Cupcake by Heniarth Quip and third was Roseisle Samantha out of a mare by Pandy Tudyr. An excellent day for the "bloodlines". Many thanks to all those involved, especially to the Julie Templeton Show Team and Shannon Meers for making sure Peach hit the hightime. |

PLEASING VIEWING Heniarth Norma-Jean (Heniarth Quinnell x Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip was third in her first Horse of the Year Show qualifying class at Midland Counties Show. Huge congratulations to the Green family. In the same class the second Firle Duchess was by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and the fourth Ty Golau Georgie Girl was by Heniarth Quip, all conceived here at Heniarth! The second place First Ridden was Mynyddtaren The Marksman, also by Pandy Tudyr! The photo right shows Roseisle Witches Glen by Heniarth Yarra Glen and out of Roseisle Bewitched by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr who won at Warrington Horse Show recently and we're sure that if given the opportunity could become a major contender this season - let's hope we see her out and about some more. And although she refers to it as, "little league", Fiona McNaught has been out and about in-hand with the three year old gelding, Heniarth Bedazzled (Heniarth Quip x Heniarth Quilt) and has qualified for the Chiltern and Thames Rider Magazine Champs in September - good for her - perhaps we'll get a Heniarth pony in the High Point Gelding awards? |

HEADING DOWN UNDER We are happy to announce that Heniarth Whistle Down the Wind will be heading to Ash Porter's Vanoca Park Stud in Victoria, Australia. "William" as he has been nicknamed, is of course a full brother to Heniarth Wood-Wind and Heniarth Ting-a-Ling, being by Lemonshill Top Note and out of Eyarth Windflower. He shows all the signs of taking such an adventure in his stride and hopefully will become a great ambassador for Heniarth in Australia. |

STUD VISIT Hot on the heels of the Bath & West Show and with Richard away judging, Meirion welcomed the Clwyd Welsh Pony and Cob Association on their annual stud visit. It was some fourteen years since the group had come to Heniarth, not long after we had moved in - so we hoped they may have seen a difference since their last visit! As can be seen by Heniarth Beaudacious (Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum Yum) dazzling in the sunshine the visitors had great weather and by all accounts enjoyed their time here. Thanks go to Rod, Ingrid, John and Glenys for enabling the day to go smoothly and I was assured that each pony on parade came complete with hoof oil and brylcreem - gotta keep the standard up when the boss is away! |

ROYAL BATH & WEST SHOW When I was a child living in Somerset the Bath & West Show was always an annual pilgrimage, with me sitting in the stand looking at horses all day whilst the rest of the family walked around the showground! So to do well at this show always has a special sentiment, added to this year by my folks at the ringside looking on. It must be the first time ever that my father has photos of ponies on his camera!!! We took four ponies, won with three and a good second with the other! Adagio de l'Aurore won and stood Reserve Section Champion under An Bale-Williams which was great for his breeder Ingrid to witness as she had left Normandy at 7pm. the night before and hadn't yet had any sleep! Despite that she was still able to take excellent photos. Rhoson Dorti won her class. Heniarth Chiff-Chaff stood second in a class that I would have been happy to feature anywhere in the top six and Mr. Milligan won an equally as good stallion class. As the judge Len Bigley said - it was a day for the ladies, as he chose his first two mares as Champion and Reserve, with Milligan receiving the beautiful "Wenham & Elliott Trophy" for the best opposite sex. Interestingly enough Mesdames Wenham & Elliott of the Lucton Stud first gave this trophy for the best Kerry Hill Sheep and it was re-directed to the Welsh Mountain Ponies in 1984. RLM |

FOALS OF 2011 Each of the foals that were due have arrived safely and all are growing well. This year definitely seems to have been a "colt year" with all but one being boys. Photo right is Heniarth Yesteryear (Colne Turbo x Sunwillow Yasmin) full brother to last years filly Yesterday and the two year old Yowza that already has mares scanned in foal to him at the Shamrock Lake Stud in the Netherlands. We think this young man is very nice with his double cross of Pendock Legend. More photos of the foals can be seen on the FOR SALE page. |

WELSH PONY AND COB VERENIGING, HOLLAND Heniarth Thingamajig (Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) made a successful show ring debut for Wilma Bijpas at the WPCV Spring Show at Nunspeet in Holland, courtesy of the Ysselvliedts show team. She was named Champion Section B and then Reserve Supreme of the Show under UK judge Breian Llewellyn. News from the Lywimar Stud is that she has been covered by Cwrt-y-Cadno Cymro with strict instructions that she is to have a filly next year! |

COTHI BRIDGE
AGRICULTURAL SHOW The first one day Agricultural Show took place on the last May bank holiday weekend at Cothi Bridge and as we come to expect on that date - the rain came down! Heniarth Chiff Chaff stood third in a good class of fillies and Rhoson Dorti took a second - so it was up to the boys to save the day! Adagio de l'Aurore won his class, lifted the Youngstock championship and then stood Reserve B Champion under Nina Clayton and in doing so got extremely wet, just missing out on a WPCS silver medal! A large class of stallions came out for Kerry Evans (Pinina Stud) to assess. Milligan was pulled third with Yarra Glen second (see right). Eventually Milligan turned the tables to win the class and then went promptly into the Championship and won! Adding a WPCS silver medal to his awards. All the judges came together to select the Overall Welsh Championship by a points system and it turned out that Milligan had the highest score and won! The last class of the day was the Supreme of Show. Luckily the sun had came out by that point which gave us both an extra spring in our stride to have Milligan pulled forward into the top spot! His third Supreme award of the season winning a lovely day rug from Red Mills feeds and a whole host of product from Alva Horse - a great haul indeed and another exciting telephone call to Sweden that night! |

RIDDEN SUCCESS Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) and her connections had a day to remember at the BSPS Area 3a show in North Yorkshire. She qualified for the Royal International Horse Show and then went even better to take the Supreme of Show winning two sashes and a trophy for her excellent young jockey Anya Potter-Firth! As breeders it was very pleasing to hear that the judge that qualified her was Jillian Grummitt, the same judge that qualified her sire, Mr.Milligan for the Horse of the Year Show earlier in the year. She must have seen some similar characteristics that further impressed her! Another of Milligans offspring to be turning heads is Heniarth Tutti-Frutti with Morgan Starkey. He was Novice Mini Champion at the NPS Area 11 show earning himself a nice write up in the Horse & Hound. Heniarth Cupcake is also thru to the Royal International with Tristan Chandler though has now realised that "Miss Cupcake" actually likes jumping - so with the help of Sarah Challinor we might see her in a new guise later this year. |

BIRTHDAY HONOURS This years Carmarthen Welsh Pony and Cob Association Show fell on Richards birthday so what better way to celebrate than to go to a horse show (?) especially when the four ponies we took each won their classes! Even better was that the new venue at Ffos Las Racecourse was quite literally just down the road so the diesel bill was minimal, a first for 2011. Heniarth Chiff Chaff (below right) was first off and won a good class of thirteen yearling fillies under Stuart Franklin (Sarum Stud). Heniarth Mr.Milligan (above) then won a good stallion class with Dukes Hill Darcy second and Heniarth Yarra Glen third (photo below) shown by the Tryfel Stud for Rod Lewis. To our delight Milligan went Champion therefore gaining a WPCS Bronze Medal and qualification for the Brightwells National Final. On to the Section B's where Adagio de l'Aurore (right) won his class, as did Rhoson Dorti. Adagio had greater plans though taking the Youngstock title and then fantastically winning a WPCS Bronze medal as overall Champion for France! Clerk of the course Tim Long judged the Supremes selecting Adagio as Overall Yearling Champion following on from his similar success at Lampeter. Mr.Milligan then impressed Mr.Long enough to award him his second Supreme Show Championship in as many outings. What a great day - made even more special as Inger Becker was present at the show to see her "Millis" victorious. When we arrived home we realised that Brynodyn Sirius,(above right) also by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr, conceived here at Heniarth, was Supreme Ridden Champion. He really was a fantastic stallion that we were so lucky to bring to Wales. Fantastic new venue, well organised and well laid out - just a little bit windy!!!!! |

ROYAL WATCHING It was fantastic to hear that the Heniarth Quip daughter (left) Cosford Widows Quest, out of Bengad Widows Tears won the youngstock class at the Royal Windsor Horse Show for Paul and Margaret Brightwell. She's pictured here trotting up in the main arena with HM. The Queen in the background looking on - almost appearing to lean forward as if interested in this young filly. What an honour! Many thanks to Team Wensley for producing her. Quip was also grandsire of the third filly in the class, Lexy Page's Amilas Cassiopeia by Sunwillow Jubilee, bred by Sal Keswani. Also Heniarth Li'l Peach was pulled top, though finally ended up standing second in her M & M First Ridden class with the Templeton Show Team - so a good show all round. |

OFFSPRING OUT AND
ABOUT The photo above is of the filly from Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah and Colne Turbo, who at present is destined to be named Heniarth Shhh. She is charming everybody that comes into the field and with any luck may be seen out this summer with her mother. On the right is an unusual pose of a delightful daughter of Heniarth Wood-Wind and Rhoson Si-Lwli by Eyarth Harlequin who was sold to the Filmer's Longhalves Stud in utero. We think this looks a very special filly. Jo Filmer writes, "She is certainly one of the most precocious, bold and full of her own self importance foals that I have ever had!! Nothing fazes her – she struts around the place with the most fantastic movement". Wonder where she gets that attitude from? She rejoices in the name of Longhalves Lollapaloosa, which apparently means something " exquisite/very fine"!! Above right is another photo of the Heniarth Wood-Wind yearling filly, Rhoson Shani, earning her father a valuable six sire rating points by taking first prize at the Newark & Notts. County Show recently. Great result for us and for Pam and Rob Doughty. |

GLANUSK WELSH STALLION SHOW After Richard judging at last years show we enjoyed being able to return to Glanusk Show as exhibitors; made even more enjoyable that the much needed rain that fell missed the two classes we exhibited in! Adagio de l'Aurore gained a creditable second in a good class of yearling colts, whilst Dorti managed to win an equally strong filly class. Her neice, Fydlyn Rosell, out of Dorti's sister, Rhoson Eldra took third in a big yearling filly class that sadly saw all competitors getting thoroughly soaked. Winning Section A under saddle was Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell, pictured left with Eleri Marshalsay for Keith and Ann Hughes, produced by Team Courtway. |

FROM WOOD-WINDS FIRST CROP
We have been thrilled by how the first crop of foals by Heniarth Wood-Wind have been growing on. Adagio de l'Aurore (left) has already been mentioned on this site and on Facebook many times, though it is great that he continues to turn heads. Above him here is Rhoson Amlyn (ex Rhoson Anja by Eyarth Sama) who is maturing nicely for the Horinga brothers at Stal Margriethoeve in the Netherlands, though we're not sure if he will hit the show ring this season. However Rhoson Shani (above ex Rhoson Sipsi by Cottrell Faberge) has been out winning in the the north of England for Pam & Rob Doughty of the Cortworth Stud. This photo shows her collecting the Reserve Youngstock Championship at the North Eastern W.P.C.A. Show at Clumber Park recently from judge Nina Clayton. Wood-Wind has already been busy "entertaining" the ladies this season so we look forward to the day that we can bring you more news of his offspring. |

BENGAD DESERT SAGE Thanks for the many enquiries regarding "the Bengad colt" that we purchased in last years Fayre Oaks sale. "Benjy" ( there's an original nickname for you!) is coming along nicely as you can see from the photo on the left and ticks a lot of boxes we would look for in a potential young stallion, not to mention his fantastic pedigree. Time will tell if he hits the show-ring this summer or whether he just "bides his time" for the right moment - however rest assured we are very pleased he is at Heniarth and more news will follow. |

MORE SUCCESS FOR
SHANNON MEERS We have been delighted to get news from the Julie Templeton Show Team that our Heniarth L'il Peach (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Nerwyn Linda) has been doing well in the hands of young jockey Shannon Meers. The latest result being that the pair have gained their second Royal International Horse Show ticket, this time in the First Ridden class. However, Shannon has not remained content with that. Pictured right is Shannon and her Shetland pony Smokey Joe winning at the Shetland Pony Grand National qualifying heat at Badminton Horse Trials on Easter Weekend. Peach had better watch out! |

LAMPETER WELSH BREEDS
STALLION SHOW It was an honour to win the first class of the day at the 50th anniversary show for France, in this, the year that the International Welsh Pony and Cob Show comes to Wales. In fact the top three placings in the Section B yearling colt class saw the winner, Adagio de l'Aurore being foaled in France out of a French bred mare; the second Moelgarnedd Stadros out of the Australian bred mare, Weston Park Musk Rose and the third colt Zonneweide Royal Lustre, having a Dutch prefix by Liezelshof Macho who was bred in Belgium. A truly international flavour! Adagio was named best Section B yearling under John James (Sianwood Stud) so therefore went forward to the Overall Best yearling supreme at the end of the day and duly collected the Joe Giles Perpetual Challenge Memorial Trophy for the thrilled owner/breeder Ingrid Delaitre who was in the UK to witness it all - as well as take great photos to record the days events. Rhoson Dorti, left, (Steehorst Kyro x Rhoson Sipsi) marched her way to receive a second place rosette in the two year old filly class. |

GREAT WINTER FINALS FOR
DILYS Five year old Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) had a super time at the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships, the culmination of a very successful winter run of shows. Making it into the exciting evening performances she gained a 4th in the Novice under judge Mathew Lawrence and then a 5th in the Restricted section under David Hibbert.- all ridden expertly by five year old Anya Potter-Firth. We believe that in each section they were the highest placed home-produced combinations which speaks volumes of all the effort that Anoushka and Sally Potter have put into getting Dilys to this standard. However, not to be outdone the following morning they went into the "Tiny Tots" section and won and stood Reserve Champion. Anya was thrilled to win two sashes but not pleased at being referred to as a "Tiny Tot" - she much preferred "Junior Rider"!!! So, look out Jayne Webber, Anya's close on your heels! |

| EYARTH WINDFLOWER - has foaled a lovely colt, again by Lemonshill Top Note, making him a full brother to H.Wood-Wind and H.Ting-a-Ling, looks like this chap will be on his way to Australia. |

ROLL OF HONOUR FOR YARRA At the recent Swedish Stallion grading the Cwm-Meudwy Studs Heniarth Yarra Glen was awarded an A grade certificate based on the quality and success of his stock that he sired when he was resident in the country. Mostly it takes about ten years for a stallion to get grade A so what was so exceptional for Yarra is that he got it from only two years with offspring still now only five years. He had only 28 sons and daughters all together. The stallions get points for show results; results from 3 year tests; summer gradings for fillies and graded stallions, and almost all Yarras offspring had points from any of these. One such daughter was Overall A Champion at their National Show last year. The plan is that Yarra will hit the show ring this summer with the Cobley Family from Tryfel producing him for Rod Lewis. Good luck Yarra ! |

WOOD-WINDS SECOND CONTINENTAL FOAL The above photo was received from Geert and Marit of the Stougjeshoeve Stud in Holland of their filly foal by Heniarth Wood-Wind out of Cottrell Arian by Rotherwood State Occasion. Needless to say they are very pleased - as are we! We think Stougjeshoeve Ariana will be one to watch out for. Also, a second foal, this time a filly called Vennebos True Melody by Heniarth Yeats at the Vennebos Stud, so ; "H 4 Holland = H 4 Heniarth" (who writes this stuff?) |
"QUEST" QUALITY STRIKES AGAIN...... Sunwillow Gundegai, bred by Charles and Wendy Frank, beat all comers at the National Pony Society Dressage Championships with nine year old Livy Hoyland for owner Caroline Bell. Gundegai, named after a small town in New South Wales, Australia was conceived in South West Wales, UK. His dam is the Sunwillow Quest daughter, Sunwillow Bellona who was resident here at the time she was covered by the aged Brierwood Constable who was at the Joiners Stud. Well done - a real achievement. His cousin, Sunwillow Jubilee, by Heniarth Quip so just goes to show the versatility of Sunwillow Quests family. |

| What a
show! Six years after attending the show at
Malvern, Heniarth Mr.Milligan returned and
conquered all! It was a last minute decision to
take him so we entered him on the day - as did a
lot of other people as the classes filled up
with some quality animals. It was a great thrill
to be pulled top and then even better to be
pulled forward as Peter Jones' (Menai) champion,
therefore qualifying for the Brightwells
National In-Hand Championship. In 2005 he was
also Champion under Laura Hutchins (Bengad). We then went swiftly into the Overall Welsh Championship under Angela Grummitt who selected him to take the Nell Pennell Perpetual Trophy which was an honour in itself. Reserve here was Catryn Bigley and the Section B Llanarth Da Vinci. We then waited in the glorious sunshine, eating ice cream in April, to compete in the Cuddy Horse of the Year Show qualifier to be judged by Jilly Grummitt (Fenbourne).Always a stiff competition, there were some very good animals on parade to contest this first qualifier of the season. After considerable inspection the Highland pony, Stirlingdene was announced as Reserve Champion. Then the wait for the announcement of the Champion. The commentator Carey Knox typically built up the moment in best X Factor fashion and Mr. Milligan was pulled forward! At his last appearance here he took the ridden Horse of the Year Show ticket - so to come back and qualify in-hand was even more special. In 2005 he stood Reserve Supreme of the Show from the ridden classes. This year he went one better and took the Overall Supreme of the Show winning the Ron Hayes Gold Cup- what a star? |

FOALS AROUND THE WORLD Whilst we still wait for the foal of Heniarth Canoodle that could have been due from the middle of February onwards we can bring you news of the first few foals of 2011 by Heniarth stallions. In France we can report that Cwrt-y-Cadno Colomen (Cwrt-y-Cadno Cymro x Thornbery Royal Gem) has given birth to her first foal, a colt named Blue Note de l'Aurore by Heniarth Wood-Wind for Ingrid Delaitre.(photo left) Meanwhile in Holland Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) has sired his first foal, again a colt named Vennebos Double Trouble for Rhode Thielen. We understand he has already been sold to France. Heniarth Tickety Boo out of Eyarth Windflower has delivered a lovely chestnut filly at Rotherwood by the Swedish based sire Carwood Redwing. Hopefully next month we will be able to bring you news of the five foals to be born here at Heniarth. |

BACK ON WELSH SOIL It was great to welcome the Heniarth Wood-Wind son, Adagio de l'Aurore back to Heniarth from his home in France. Adagio was here last summer with his mother Etincelle Ravignan by Kirby Cane Statecraft and won many admirers. We hope to get him out and about at a few shows this summer for his owner Ingrid Delaitre in the hope he can win a few more! He travelled well and seemed to be happy to be back in Wales; the plan being is that he will represent France at the International Welsh Pony and Cob Show this summer. We hope to be able to bring you lots more news of Adagio as the season progresses. |

FIRST ROYAL
INTERNATIONAL QUALIFIER The honour of becoming the first pony from the Julie Templeton Show Team to qualify for the Royal International Horse Show 2011 fell upon Heniarth Li'l Peach (see homepage) together with jockey, Shannon Meers. The pair had a great Ponies (UK) Winter Championships, picking up several top awards. A fantastic start to the summer season. MORE FEBRUARY NEWS We didn't realise that Heniarth Davey Crockett (photo right) had already been out and about in 2011 with Jade John. They won and stood Reserve Mini Open Champion at the B.S.P.S. show in Pembrokeshire, where half brother, also by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr, Brynodyn Sirius stood Novice Champion from his First Ridden class with Lauren Davies - not a good time of year for grey ponies to look white but I gather they were immaculate. |

CAN YOU BELIEVE
IT? Reading the "Country Living" magazine recently it seems that the David Lloyd chain of Fitness Centres has come up with a new workout class for it's members. It is said to "get you in touch with your inner farmhand with moves that mimic shovelling, lifting and stacking". I think we could easily offer that class here too, probably for a lot less cost and we could even throw in a bit of discount mud wrestling too! |
AS FEBRUARY
COMES TO A CLOSE.......... It seems as though Heniarth ridden ponies had a major spurt of success on the last weekend of the month. Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) took the Mini Championship at the Northern All Welsh whilst Heniarth Li'l Peach (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Nerwyn Linda) took another Championship at B.S.P.S. Area 10 with Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlchygwynt Caryl) winning on what we believe was her first trip out of the New Year. Meanwhile down South at B.S.P.S. Area 11 the Lead rein of Hunter Type, Syon Snuff was Mini Champion and Courtway Flair stood second in the Open Mountain and Moorland Lead rein - both ponies of course being by Heniarth Quip. Congratulations to each of their jockeys and handlers for braving the Winter elements. |

50 YEARS OF
LAMPETER STALLION SHOW We enjoyed a very pleasant evening hosted by Peter Jones of the Menai Stud who is President for the 50th staging of the Lampeter Stallion Show in 2011 - a show that we were very proud to have stood Supreme Champion at with Heniarth Mr.Milligan in 2005, when he came through to the Supreme from being Champion of the inaugural ridden classes earlier that day. The evening was rounded off by Thomas Jones and older brother Richard singing - to the delight of all present, resulting in an encore performance. We all knew they are both good riders, good handlers and talented young judges but were unaware of their vocal and piano skills. Photo left shows a younger Peter "Menai" at Lampeter with Menai Fury, looking on in the white mackintosh is the late Willie Jones, the grand-father of Thomas and Richard. |

BACK TO THE
HOMELAND After one cancelled trip before Christmas because of the snow, Heniarth Mr.Milligan has made his much awaited return to Wales from his home at the Ekbacken Stud in Sweden, enjoying a lovely frosty morning in the field following his two day journey. The three time Royal Welsh winning Mr. Milligan was last in the UK during 2005/2006 where he excelled himself in-hand and under saddle, becoming Supreme of the Show at the Lampeter Stallion Show. His most remarkable achievement was winning the Junior stallion class and Reserve Male Championship at the Royal Welsh that year, then the following morning jumping a clear round in the Working Hunter class and later that afternoon being selected as the Ridden Welsh A & B Champion - all in the same season that he qualified for Olympia and the Horse of the Year Show under saddle, ridden by India Latter. Many thanks to Inger and Johann Becker for allowing "Millis" to travel back to Wales for this season only - it's special for us to have the chance to use this great son of the celebrated Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and indeed Sunwillow Mutters, once again. |

THE WORLD TOUR GATHERS SPEED........ Its been a great honour to talk to enthusiasts in France and Sweden this Winter, discussing breed type, conformation and showing tips and the latest invitation to talk in Holland was no exception. As the guest of the Welsh Pony en Cob Vereniging (WPCV) it was great to see some seventy people at Heerde in the east of the Netherlands gathered together at their New Years meeting. The meeting was also the launch of the groups inaugural Yearbook publication that will no doubt soon fill the gap left my the demise of the famous "blue" Dutch yearbook. I must admit to being a "tad" embarrassed at being invited to sign several copies when the hardworking secretary/editor, Wilma Bijma did all the work! During my brief visit I enjoyed the hospitality and indeed the taxi service of Rhode Thielen (Vennebos Stud) where I was also able to see Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) and see his first two wives heavily in foal to him. On the same trip I was also welcomed at the WPCV Secretary's Lywimar Stud to see Heniarth Thingumagic (Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) who is maturing into a lovely mare. All too soon it was back on the KLM flight to Cardiff and start concentrating on our own "show team" for 2011. Richard |

ASSOCIATION MEETINGS We have been out and about this Winter talking to Area Associations. Firstly the Brecon & Borders Association had us turning out in frozen conditions over Christmas, though with the accompaniment of "sherpa" Barbara Green, we made it safely from home to Talgarth and back again. I think the small but enthusiastic crowd that turned out appreciated our efforts. Then in the New Year we were invited to the Glamorgan Assoc. - again to talk but also to present their annual points competition prizes. The photo on the left shows members/representatives of the Young Judges team who won at the National Show last summer. They each received a trophy from the Association to reward their efforts. A good night was had by all, we hope, though sadly we overran the "chuck out" time of the hall hire and had to go into "extra time"!!! As always at Glamorgan, home made snacks and tea or coffee at the end of the night was very well received. OFF ON THE RIGHT HOOF Heniarth ridden ponies have already been out at the shows and secured early qualification for the Winter Championships. Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) secured a Reserve Championship Novice win, closely followed an Open Championship victory at the same B.S.P.S. Area show at Willerby Hill in the North of England for young rider Anja Potter of the Whisperdale Stud. Heniarth Li'l Peach (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Nerwyn Linda) lifted her third Championship in as many outings at Keysoe in Bedfordshire for the Julie Templeton Show Team, partnered by Shannon Meers. Great news to keep us going through the depths of our "Welsh winter" |
|
ANOTHER FIRST FOR WOOD-WIND Another fantastic first was secured for Heniarth Wood-Wind as news came that his first mare was scanned in foal for the Australian Tooravale Stud.( www.tooravalestud,com ) Having leased Wood-Wind over the UK winter months of the Australian breeding season, semen was collected at the West Kington Stud and sent "down under" for exclusive use of the Victoria based stud. The Tooravale Stud of Wendy Trimble and Shane Bysouth has bred Royal Show Champions in six states throughout Australia since its establishment in 1982, based on predominantly Weston bloodlines. The first mare scanned is Weston Park Marigold (Weston Olympian x Weston Park Magnolia [Rotherwood Casino Royale x Weston Mary Anne] ) As well as this Australian and his UK bred foals we can look forward to receiving news of Wood-Winds foals due in France, Holland and Sweden during 2011. |

NEW YEARS READING We were very interested to hear of a new publication entitled "The Ladies of Blaenwern" by Teleri Bevan that outlines the lives and achievements of the three ladies that founded the Llanarth Stud; Barbara Saunders-Davies, Enid Lewis and Pauline Taylor. The story unfolds as we have learnt over the years though it was interesting to read how Pauline Taylor was involved in the formation of the "Welsh Society for the Humane Disposal of Surplus Ponies" which up to this time I believed was the sole work of Sheila Richards of the Criban(R) Stud. This Society is of course the forerunner to our Christmas charity, "The Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies" (details at the bottom of this page.) It's sad that some forty years on we are still encountering the problems of unwanted foals being trailed around markets for a few pounds. Will people ever learn? The book is a great read with some amusing insights and recollections from those that were present at the time, though as we all know, has a sad end in that Pauline Taylor's vision at that time of leaving Blaenwern as a legacy for the history of Welsh farming and livestock never came to fruition. Nowadays, with the popularity of countryside tourism people would welcome the chance to secure such a place for the nation. However the postscript explains how the Llanarth prefix has in fact continued and flourished as we all know it today so I'm sure the "trio" would be looking down favourably. The book is available from www.ylolfa.com for £8.95 |

THE NATIONAL PONY
SOCIETY/BAILEYS HORSE FEEDS RIDDEN MOUNTAIN &
MOORLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS, OLYMPIA, LONDON, 2010 The last staging of this prestigious end of year championship saw the title once again fall to a Dartmoor pony, however the four strong team of qualified Welsh Mountain ponies were a tribute to their owners, breeders and riders. The Heniarth Trophy, in memory of Sunwillow Quest, is given for the highest placed junior rider in this open competition. This year it was won by Catherine Hudson riding Mr & Mrs John Russell's Gartconnel Shooting Star who also achieved a creditable third place overall, and in fact gaining the highest conformation score of the day! Congratulations to them. It is a pity that the competition has come to an end for the National Pony Society with the generous sponsorship of Baileys Horse Feeds that made qualifying a real treat for exhibitors. We are indeed honoured to have taken part four times; twice with Heniarth Quip, once with Heniarth Mr.Milligan and once with Heniarth Quail and have fond memories of each occasion. OVERNIGHT SENSATION It was great to see a photo of Rhoson Dorti in the Horse & Hound (December 16th) after her Reserve Supreme award at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. Not just a photo but five paragraphs of text, a caption and a quote! Supreme judge "Jethro" was quoted as saying "She is a very promising filly with lovely conformation, a long front, powerful hindquarters and a very good walker" We're glad he liked her too so hopefully she will re-appear at some point during the 2011 season. To view highlights of the Winter Fair please CLICK HERE (may not be available in some countries) |

WELCOME RETURN At the close of 2010 we were thrilled to hear that Heniarth Tickety-Boo has returned from the Nexus Stud in Sweden, to the UK, to reside at the Rotherwood Stud. Tickety-Boo is the first foal of Eyarth Windflower by Rotherwood Secret Agent, sired by him prior to his export to Australia. It will be hugely interesting to see how she crosses with Lemonshill Top Note, adding a touch more of the famous Gredington Tiwlip into the mix. |

CYMDEITHAS
AMAETHYDDOL FRENHINOL CYMRU FFAIR AEAF 2010 |
CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY Despite the forecast of biting cold winds direct from Siberia and imminent snowfall we decided to head to Builth Wells with the yearling Section B filly, Rhoson Dorti (Steehorst Kyro x Rhoson Sipsi by Cottrell Faberge) She took it all in her stride and duly won her class and then went straight into the Championship and became judge Simon Bigley's (Llanarth) choice as his Champion, collecting her W.P.C.S. Bronze Medal. It was a very pleasing result for us as Dorti is to remain here at Heniarth as a future wife for Heniarth Wood-Wind. The dilemma then was; do we return the following day to contest the Supreme Championships? More snow was forecast but the honour of representing our Section outweighed the risk of bad weather that in the end didn't materialize. All seemed a futile effort when unsurprisingly we didn't feature in the Overall Welsh Championship under William Lloyd (Geler), however all was not lost as we ventured into the Supreme of Show Championships judged by "Jethro" the Cornish comedian and successful Hunter breeder and exhibitor. Dorti turned the tables and was selected as the Reserve Supreme Champion to Henrie Leeuwenhaags recent purchase, the Section C Llanidan Truffle. Congratulations to Team Tyngwndwn who produced her. This was our best result here since becoming Reserve Supreme with Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip, back in 2002. With the Champion A and our Champion B being by Dutch bred sires and then the supreme owned by a Dutchman - this Winter Fair should be remembered as Nadolig Netherlands ! Congratulations also due to our good friends John and Linda Harries for breeding the Welsh Part-Bred Champion, Hope Henrietta. See www.hopestud.com |

WOOD-WINDS FIRST WINNER - It was great to hear from Rob and Pam Doughty that their Rhoson Shani (Heniarth Wood-Wind x Rhoson Sipsi) won and took the Championship at her first show, National Pony Society (Area 4) Yorkshire, making her the first of Wood-Winds offspring to gain Championship honours. Congratulations - let's hope that's the first of many! |

FANTASTIC FIRST
TIME We gave you news recently of Heniarth Li'l Peach (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Nerwyn Linda) at home. Well she's been to her first show, ridden ably by Shannon Meers to become Restricted Champion (for ponies not having previously qualified) and then Open Ridden Champion, both qualifiers for the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships. Not bad for her first outing. Many thanks to the Julie Templeton Show Team for doing such a great job with her. |

THE WORLD TOUR During November I was lucky enough to be invited by two overseas societies, in France and Sweden, to speak at their breed conferences. Firstly I was to join Philippa Owens (Cascob Stud) as a guest of the newly formed Welsh Passion France to speak at their first Breed Conference sponsored by Brightwell Auctioneers. I was to speak on A's and B's with Phillipa talking on C's and D's then together joining forces to give hints and tips on show-ring production and handling. Flying into Paris on the weekend of the first gales of the season was quite an "interesting" experience so it was good to be met by WPF President Dr Etienne Stevens (Gui Nel Stud) and Ingrid Delaitre (Haras de L'Aurore) with whom we were to stay. As we headed North East out of the city we passed an illuminated Eiffel Tower and the Stade de France on our way to the Nomandy countryside. The following day, before a lovely lunch from Etienne's wife Catherine, we were able to re-acquaint ourselves with animals that we had exported; two Cobs from Cascob and Heniarth Yours Truly (Heniarth Quip x Sunwillow Yasmin) being the first, though no doubt not the last Mountain Pony at Gui Nel. A quick trip to Ingrids neighbouring Haras de L'Aurore saw us admire the lovely colt foal, Adagio de L'Aurore by Heniarth Wood-Wind and I think Phillipa left the farm with a liking for Section B's! |

With a little help from Pennal Brynmor (above)
we were able to prepare our PowerPoint
presentations ready for an early start the
following day towards the centre of the country
to Parc Equestre National in the Sologne region,
based at the estate once belonging to Napoleon
Boneparte. It was great to see an enthusiastic audience that had travelled some distance to hear us speak and once we had mastered the translation technique with the valuable help of Ingrid Delaitre the day that started at 9.30a.m seemed to pass quickly until it ended at 6.30p.m. It was a pleasure to work with Phillipa and I think the day was well received to the point that we might consider further bookings once we have established an "agent" ! That night we had an enjoyable welcome from Nicolas and Sabine Richer of Elvage Cherry and the following morning saw their collection of Ponies and Cobs, many imported, together with an exotic collection of Parrots that Nicolas also breeds. All in all it was a very enjoyable weekend with plenty of laughter, good food and good company and I hope we paved the way for many more conferences like this to encourage the enthusiasm of breeders across the Channel. |
AND ON TO SWEDEN The following weekend I journeyed to Sweden as a guest of their Society's Breeding Conference, again to talk on the Welsh breeds and their show-ring preparation. My travelling companion here was Rod Lewis of the Cwm-Meudwy Stud and needless to say we were both very pleased to meet our good friend Inger Becker at Stockholm Airport looking so well after her recent heart operation. With the threat of snow all weekend we firstly travelled south through flurry's to her Ekbacken Stud to see Heniarth Mr.Milligan and his various wife's amongst son Johan's huge sport horses. Again plenty of chat and good food was consumed before we left for Katrineholm towards the centre of the country and the Sporthotell which was the base of the weekends events. Amazingly the gathered audience could all speak English well enough that we didn't need a translator and they even laughed at some of my jokes! After the first PowerPoint presentation we journeyed out to a local barn in very cold and snowy conditions to talk about trimming and handling (right) with me stressing that manes and tails should be pulled and not cut and then being pleasantly surprised by one young lady who asked if indeed it was incorrect to put brass browbands on females? Hallelujah! A pet hate of mine that I was always taught that females DO NOT wear brass, which very few people in the UK seem to notice, and there we were in a freezing barn in the middle of Sweden and this information is volunteered to me! Fantastic! |

The day continued back in the warm and into the evening with more photographs and chat, only to be followed on to the following day with important Society discussions. We left early to visit Per Aschan's Molstaberg Stud so that we could see Sunwillow Georgina in her new home where she in fact looked very content. We were impressed with the young stallion, Molstaberg Chapman ,by Heniarth Yarra Glen and out of Molstaberg Celline by Heniarth Quip. Celline is out of Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina, the dam of our Heniarth Canoodle and of course Heniarth Coron. Soon enough it was time to get back to the airport and in what appeared a "parallel universe" as we watched five year old re-runs of UK soap opera Emmerdale episodes, with subtitles, on the big screen TV as squadrons of high speed snow ploughs, ten across, worked on the runways to keep them open. We eventually took off after the plane was sprayed down with anti-freeze and arrived home in a relatively "balmy" Cardiff. Little did we know that the Scandinavian weather was right behind us and dropped us into snow and ice a few days later. A great selection of photos ( and captions!) by Marie Nilsson can be seen ; CLICK HERE It's always been great to visit Sweden - though I think next time I'll wait until they put the "heating" back on! "Marie caught me napping" -oops! and left receiving a thank you gift from Society Chairwoman, Gunn Johansson |
CHRISTMAS DONATION As we did last year; rather than spend lots of money on the purchase and mailing of Christmas cards around the World we have decided to give a donation in lieu to the Society for the Welfare of Horse and Ponies to help them in their work. For those of you that remember, this Society was founded by the late. Sheila Richards of the Criban (R) Stud and focuses primarily of welfare issues in and around South Wales. Please take some time to look at their website. |
THE WELSH NATIONAL SHOW ON YOU TUBE Karen Cheetham of the Carrwood Stud let us know that she has placed a video of the Championship of the Brightwells Section B Silver medal classes on You Tube. For those of you that would like to view it - the judge is none other than Meirion Davies, his Champion was Paddock Alysha and his Reserve Champion was Brynoffa Jazz. It's great to look back and remember we did have a summer - once! |

DAN DARES BIG
CHANCE We recently had news from Lambert Bosman of the Uiterwaarden Stud in the Netherlands who has leased Heniarth Dan Dare ( right) from Harold and Yvette Zoet to cover some of his mares in 2011. Dan Dare is the first foal of Heniarth Yeeha Sheila (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin) and sired by Heniarth Quip. Lambert has recently exported a filly foal, Uiterwaarden Fairy Queen by Lacy Jonty to the Islyn Stud in North Wales and bred the big winning colt Utterwaardens First Edition out of Sunwillow Xanadu (Waxwing Hurricane x Sunwillow Luzzana by Coed Coch Norman) the property of the Hoekhorst Stud. Let's hope that Dan Dare can prove himself to be a useful sire for the Uiterwaarden Stud and for Holland. |

THE ONE AND ONLY It was great to receive some photos of the Show Hunter Pony, Syon Snuff recently,(left) the only Welsh Part-Bred pony that Heniarth Quip has ever sired. His mother Syon Sugar Angel by Keston Tribune came to stud here from Lady Caffyn-Parsons via Jane Mabbet of the Highmead Stud. It has been exciting to see "Snuff" winning the Lead Rein Show Pony/Show Hunter Pony Final at the National Pony Society Summer Championships as well as become a finalist at the Royal International Horse Show and the Horse of the Year Show this season. Owner, Sarah Davis says "He has the most amazing temperament, a true child's pony ....I can't believe that Quip has only sired one part bred, Snuff is one of a kind!!" Perhaps after his stay at Cosford, Quip may have a few more part-breds to his name? STOP PRESS - Congratulations to Sunwillow Jubilee by Heniarth Quip for winning the Section A Stallion Division of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society Performance Awards |
| TRICK,TREAT
OR TRIUMPH Great news on the Halloween weekend for stock by Heniarth Quip on both sides of the UK. At the Eastern Welsh Pony and Cob Association Foal Show the filly foal Idyllic Persona out of Idyllic Privalova (photo right) was Champion for her new owners Keith and Pauline from Cottvalley Stud we believe, whilst back in Wales Lisa Perrott's Ty Golau Georgie Girl qualified for the National Pony Society Winter Championships in Novice Lead rein and First Ridden at the the Glamorgan NPS Area 29 Show - at her debut show. Well done. |

PANDY TUDYR STOCK KEEPS GOING, AND GOING
AND GOING................ We are still proud to have had Roseisle Pandy Tudyr here for the latter part of his life and his stock continue to impress us. Debbie Barr's homebred Westfirle Duchess stood a very creditable third in the Mountain & Moorland Lead Rein final at this years Horse of the Year Show in her first season under saddle. We were delighted to see Heniarth Li'l Peach doing so well during a recent visit to Julie Templeton's Long Barn Stables. (photo left) Having re-purchased her this spring it was great to see her fulfilling the promise we thought she showed. Peach is out of Nerwyn Linda (Coed Coch Llafar x Coed Coch Lili) and is a full sister to Nerwyn Gwyl-y-Banc, who is now a sire in South Africa. As we approach Christmas and the last ever staging of the National Pony Society/Baileys Horse Feeds Ridden Mountain & Moorland Championships at Olympia wouldn't it be great for the Pandy Tudyr son, Brynodyn Sirius to become the first ever Mountain Pony to win the final since it's inception in 1978? Next best option would be for the the Heniarth Quip son, Sunwillow Jubilee to win! Either way we are very proud of the fact that they both managed to qualify and will be worthy representatives of the Mountain Pony breed in this final staging of what has become the most prestigious event of the ridden native pony calendar. Good luck to all concerned. |

AUTMUMN SHOWS The Welsh National Foal Show on the Royal Welsh Showground saw good entries as usual. We were pleased to see Tryfel Top Drawer (photo right, Tryfel Dynamite x Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip) stand fourth out of 21 forward in the Section A colt foal class under Sara Osbourne (Cui Stud), shown and produced by Team Tryfel. Also Crawel Jemima, above right, by Heniarth Wood-Wind standing fifth in the Section B filly class for her breeder Mrs.D.C.S.Williams. We dusted off the showing jacket that hadn't been out of the cupboard since our last outing at Cheshire County Show in June to take Rhoson Dorti, photo above, out for her debut outing to the Blaenavon Foal & Youngstock Show. Dorti is one of the three fillies by Steehorst Kyro that we are retaining here at Heniarth following the dispersal of the Rhoson Stud. She travelled well and turned a few heads in order to win her class and take the Reserve Section championship under Gareth Price of the Littlewern Stud. All things going well we'll be out again at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. |

"BETTER PONIES MAKE BETTER CHILDREN" To quote a very famous line of the Liseter Hall Farm of the late Mrs. Austin du Pont in Pennsylvania U.S.A. - it's great to see these two ponies, Heniarth Bedlam (above left) and Heniarth Cockatoo (above right) doing what ponies should do. Both these two are by Cascob Silver Ghost out of homebred Sunwillow Quest daughters and both are currently on the market with years of good service and success to give the next family. |

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW If ever there was a pony that gave so much pleasure to her rider, it must be Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl by Verdrefawr Daniel). Together she and Tristan gave a delightful show in the First Ridden final to take 3rd place from the thirty or so finalists forward - many thought it was a show that was worthy of winning. Huge congratulations to them both and to mom Stephanie and Grandma and of course the Julie Templeton Show Team who oversee's the training regime. The Open Ridden Section A final saw two more offspring of Quips, namely Sunwillow Jubilee and Rosmarche Holly Sprig in the top 9 of the placings whilst Jubilee scored the second highest conformation marks only to the highest placed Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell - so as breeders we must be on the right lines! Again, many congratulations to all the fellow breeders, owners, riders and trainers that enabled the Heniarth prefix to feature at the show. |

LIKE MOTHER -LIKE
SON For those of you that have seen the Heniarth Quip daughter Tryfel Dion in full flight - you will appreciate how special her movement is, so together with Rod Lewis of the Cwm-Meudwy Stud we have "bought in on the action" with the joint purchase of Tryfel Top Drawer, her son by half brother Tryfel Dynamite. This cross secures yet more Coed Coch Glyndwr, Siaradus. Sirius, and Seren blood, coupled with four crosses of the Premium stallion Craven Drummer Boy who must play a huge part in the success of Vaynor Perpetual as a consistently successful brood mare for the Tryfel Stud. All this coupled with a glorious bay colour! This same Vaynor family features in the pedigree of top dressage pony stallion Manitu so you never know where or what this colt could be destined for? |

FAYRE OAKS 2010 We don't think anyone could say this was a "vintage" years sale with prices seemingly a lot lower than previous auctions, therefore it seemed almost easier to come home with an extra pony. Seriously the only one we marked in the catalogue for, what we consider his outstanding bloodlines, Bengad Desert Sage (photo left) impressed us enough to feel we should give him a chance here at Heniarth. With forty-six crossed of Coed Coch Glyndwr, nineteen to Coed Coch Seren, the base of the immortal Coed Coch Siaradus and three crosses to Glenfield Dawn, the dam of amongst others Bengad Day Lilly - this little chap has a lot to live up to. He's settled in well, very charming, eating up all in front of him and easy to catch - seems like he's on the right road to a happy life! Congratulations to Mia Andersson of the Kallareds Stud in Sweden on the purchase of Rhoson Anja who we presented in the High Flyer Auction for John & Glenys Davies - carrying a Heniarth Wood-Wind foal to Scandinavia. |

4th GERMAN CUP It was an honour to judge for the first time in Germany recently and although numbers forward were light there were some very good examples of the breed on view. My Champion Section B and eventual Supreme of the Show was the Dutch bred mare FRESENA’S FLEUR by Den Bramel’s Rio out of Wheemhoeve’s Monica by Linde Hoeve’s Alexander (see above left) and the Reserve Supreme was the Cob H-S MY ROSE by Menai Sparkling Magic out of Deroks Welsh Model by Thorneyside Spring Magic (see above). Many thanks to the hard-working and enthusiastic committee of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Germany led by their Chairman, Hartmut Schröder for their tremendous hospitality. Richard, Sept 2010 |

INTERNATIONAL WELSH FRIENDS BORDER SHOW,
HOLLAND I had a fantastic weekend on the Dutch/Belgian border in Rijsbergen. The show ring was beautifully laid out and was a superb showcase for the ponies and Cobs that attended. Despite ending on a wet note, the International Border Show brought out some excellent entries in a great setting, brought together by Anita Aerts and Rhode Thielen and their team who worked hard all day. My Champion A was Michel Hoeke's Utterwaardens First Edition (Rookery Jackpot x Sunwillow Xanadu by Waxwing Huricane) and my B Champion, the filly Stougjeshoeve Dream's Princess (Graishall Kiwi x Stougjeshoeve Dream Girl) for Geert Verbaas. Coming together for the Supreme of Show title with co-judge Etienne Stevens we decided on the Section A colt to take top honours with the Section C Nebo Daniel daughter, Taincwm Heledd as runner up for Patrick Wormgoor. Two excellent examples of the breed. As always the Dutch hospitality was second to none, which made the weekend go too quickly. Mei, August 2010 |

ANOTHER QUINNELL
OFF TO HOYS Fantastic news from Monmouth Show was that Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell won the Welsh Mountain Pony ridden qualifier for the Horse of the Year Show. Bred and owned by Keith and Ann Hughes, Savannah becomes the third of Brynodyn Scarletts offspring by Heniarth based stallions to have qualified for the Horse of the year Show. Savannah was produced by Jocelyn Price, daughter Marianne and grand-daughter Gemma and ridden by Eleri Marshalsay. Well done Team Courtway! Offspring of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr, Heniarth Quip, Heniarth Yarra Glen and now Heniarth Quinnell, as well as Heniarth Coron have all qualified for HOYS this year. Good luck all. |
DUTCH SUCCESS Heniarth Cupcake has been a great ambassador for us this season but over in Holland her sister Kastanjehof Confetti has achieved a terrific result. When Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl returned from us to Holland she gave birth to a chestnut filly by Heniarth Quip for Janneke and Egbert-Jan Schilthuis-Teeuwen. This August Confetti attended the National mare grading show in Kootwijk and won her class, therefore securing her "ster" recognition. Congratulations. |

A VERY PLEASANT
SUMMER Although we haven't exhibited too many shows ourselves this summer it has been great to welcome so many keen enthusiasts to Heniarth. There was the Australian lady who fell on her "arse" on the wet grass, (she knows who she was!) and then another group of Australians that revelled in taking a photograph of the indentation in the earth where she fell!!! It has been great to receive such positive feedback on the crop of foals. Three Colne Turbo fillies are to be retained and the remaining two soon found wonderful homes - the secret of not producing too many each year. Particularly pleasing are the first crop by Heniarth Wood-Wind (see right) and we wish them all well in their new homes. NEW WEBSITE The new Sarnau Stud website has been launched and is very interesting with lots of historical photos. We wish them well with Sarnau Serennu, in foal to Heniarth Wood-Wind. RHOSON STUD DISPERSAL A lot of time this summer has been spent slowly dispersing the Rhoson Stud of Meirion's parents, John and Glenys, who are retiring from pony breeding. Three young fillies by the Weston Park Stud's Royal Welsh Champion Steehorst Kyro are to be retained here at Heniarth as future wives for Heniarth Wood-Wind, and of course the much treasured Royal Welsh Champion Rhoson Shem will be retained though we are delighted that he will be spending next season at the Eyarth Stud. |

FLYING THE FLAG FOR HENIARTH Since we hung up our showing jackets for the season after Cheshire County in July we have to rely on others to keep the Heniarth prefix in the prize winner results. Photo left is Powys Sprite, a son of Heniarth Quinnell, bred in Holland by Ben van der Wielen and owned by Harold and Yvette Zoet. He has been successfully campaigned this year by the Julmar Stud and has lifted many good prizes. Also Sarum Rembrandt by Quinnell has been doing well, including Young Stock Champion at Northleach. The Quip daughter, Tryfel Dion always amazes us with her zest for showing off which won her the breed championship at the Three Counties Show. Prize-winners at the National Pony Society Summer Championships included the lead rein, Heniarth Davey Crocket and his sister Heniarth Doris Day; the Riding Pony youngsters Derw May Dream and Derw Catch a Dream, out of Heniarth Hushabye by Cottrell Faberge; the Hunter Pony Syon Snuff by Heniarth Quip and then Rosmarche Holly Sprig, again by Quip, who picked up his Horse of the Year Show qualification in the First Ridden section. With Heniarth Coron already booked in for the Horse of the Year Show, knocking at the door for qualification are the Quip daughters Heniarth Cupcake and Rosmarche Heather, and the Novice ridden ponies, Heniarth Dilyscious, Heniarth Norma Jean and Heniarth Yeeha Sheila are gaining confidence and ability as the season progresses. All your hard work is very much appreciated. |

NATIONAL SUCCESS
IN SWEDEN With over 200 ponies entered at the Swedish National "Jubilee" Show, ponies with Heniarth breeding had a great day to report in the Section A ring. Youngstock Champion was Per Aschan's Molstabergs Magpie by Heniarth Yarra Glen, Reserve Overall was Inger and Johan Becker's Heniarth Mr. Milligan by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and Overall Section A Champion was Nette Norstrums Malby Mint Julep, photographed right), a four year old mare again by Henairth Yarra Glen. A fantastic day proving that it was time well spent for Yarra when he was on lease in Sweden. Yarra of course now resides with Rod Lewis at www.Cwm-Meudwy.com |

WELCOME HOME It was by chance that we came across on advertisement on the internet for Heniarth Canoodle - so it wasn't a long discussion to reach the verdict that she should come home. Having been sold at the Vimpenny Stud dispersal sale some twelve years ago, Canoodle is the last daughter of Coed Coch Rhion and out of the lovely Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina by Revel Cello, so therefore a full sister to the Horse of the Year Show prizewinner Gwyn Rhosyn Cellidh and half sister to the Royal Welsh winner, Heniarth Coron. Cellina was the catalyst for our friendship with Inger, Per and Nette from Sweden after Per purchased Cellina in foal to Heniarth Quip, producing Molstabergs Celline who has been a fantastic brood mare for him in her own right. Even more appealing to us was that Canoodle has been covered by Dukes Hill Macho Man, a full brother to Dukes Hill Magnum, of course out of Sunwillow Mutters, also dam of Heniarth Mr. Milligan. Many thanks to Wendy and Ian (Fouroaks) for bringing her down from the north to meet us outside the Royal Welsh Showground. Photo left by Elisabeth Rudbeck |

MORE NORTHERN
SUCCESS The Whisperdale Stud of Sally and Anoushka Potter are doing a great job with their team of Heniarth youngsters, ridden by four year old Anya Potter-Firth. Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum, photo right ) has taken to her work fantastically lifting several titles and gaining the second highest ride mark in her first Horse of the Year Show qualifying class at the North of England Summer Show. Heniarth Cockatoo (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail, photo below ) was Champion at the British Show Pony Society 3a Show and stood fourth out of twenty five at the Great Yorkshire Show in the pouring rain. That must have been fun! Heniarth Timpani (Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quaint, photo below right) now just three years old went out to Malton Show in-hand as a learning curve and stood top of a class of twenty five mixed Native Breed youngstock, behaved very well and looks set to become the next in line as a great saddle pony. |

ROYAL WELSH SHOW Although we chose not to exhibit ourselves at this years Royal Welsh Show, Heniarth bred ponies still had a great show for their current owners. In the mud of the Main Ring on the first day Rod Lewis gained a creditable fifth in the Mountain Pony colt class with a foal by Heniarth Yarra Glen out of his Cwm-Meudwy Sonata by Beymark Stephen. The following day Sue and Mike Harries, Castlemead Stud, presented Heniarth Bedroc (Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quilt) who was initially pulled third in the three year old colt class. In the final line up he was pulled up to second place turning the tables on Sean Bridges Padstow Millionaire who is a son of Criccieth Awel Fach that we owned and produced to win the yearling filly class here back in 1998! In the Welsh Lead Rein/First Ridden Section the entries were enormous. Winning as a Lead rein this time was Brynodyn Sirius by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr though the winning First Ridden was Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch y Gwynt Caryl) with Tristan Chandler. Cupcake stood like a rock as the Kings Troop cannons went off in the main ring and, as ever, was admired by all. In the same class Heniarth Yeeha Sheila (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin, picture below) was fourth with Dylan Perry and behaved fantastically well for such a novice. |

On the final day of the show
in the open Horse of the Year ridden qualifier
Brynodyn Savannah (Heniarth Quinnell x Brynodyn
Scarlett) stood second, Cupcake by Quip was
fourth, Cheshmere Funtime Frankie by Heniarth
Coron was fifth and Coron, who has won the
Velvet Trophy for the Best Ridden Mountain Pony
here twice before, stood sixth. So all in all a
great result for Heniarth bloodlines. Congratulations go to John and Linda Harries www.hopestud.com who bred the Coloured Champion in Hope Gypsy Queen, shown by Debbie Baker and Family and of course to Maureen and Bernard Butterworth www.paddockstud.com with Paddock Alesha who took the Section B Championship, handled in atrocious conditions by Norman Fairbanks, Gwyn Rhosyn Stud. Alesha was Richards Champion at Glanusk Show in the Spring so it was great to see her carve her name further into the pages of the history books at the Royal Welsh. |

NORTHLEACH SHOW A fantastic day was had by the Landon Family's young gelding Brynodyn Sirius at the Northleach Welsh Pony and Cob Show when not only did he lift the breed qualifying ticket for the NPS Ridden Mountain & Moorland Championships at Olympia but he went thru the card to take the Supreme of the Show, ridden by Katie Roberts. Sirius was bred by Keith and Ann Hughes by the late, great, Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and was therefore conceived here at Heniarth out of the tremendous little mare Brynodyn Scarlet who we were able to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show twice, amongst many thrilling wins. Katie now follows her parents Kim & Kevin Roberts who both rode successfully at Olympia, and who knows, may even be able to break the curse that has prevented a Mountain Pony winning the final accolade since it's inception back in 1978, the only Native breed never to have won there. Fingers crossed for all concerned. The young Heniarth Quinnel son, Sarum Rembrandt had a fantastic show also; he ended the day by becoming Section A Youngstock Champion, Reserve Section A Champion, overall Reserve Youngstock Champion and Owner Bred Champion for Stuart and Annie Franklin. FIRST HORSE OF THE YEAR QUALIFIERS Whilst Pandy Tudyr still continues to be a sire to be reckoned with, even from that big pasture in the sky, our own bred Heniarth Yarra Glen (Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) now at www.Cwm-Meudwy.com has sired his first HOYS qualifier. Waxwing Milk Tray by Yarra qualified at Lincoln County Show as a Lead Rein in the capable hands of Julie Templeton. Meanwhile Vennebos Pearly King by Heniarth Quinnel (Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Quest) now at www.sarumstud.com qualified in the Open Ridden Section A class at Norfolk for the Burchell-Small Show Team - fantastic to see that our bloodlines are having an influence in the performance arena. |

A REALLY GOOD
"STAMP" OF A PONY We knew last year when Etincelle Ravignan arrived from France to visit Heniarth Wood-Wind that we had "royalty" in our stable, though this year a letter arrived from her homeland with Etincelle as the image on the stamp! So perhaps Queen Elizabeth's image on the UK Royal Mail stamps could also be replaced by a Welsh Pony? Seems like anything could be possible? Etincelle, now eighteen years old is by Kirby Cane Statecraft out of Chirk Samantha by Chirk Caradoc and has a lovely colt foal at foot by Wood-Wind, named Adagio de l'Aurore for proud owner Ingrid Delaitre. |

CHESHIRE COUNTY SHOW Moving on to complete a very busy week we left home at 2.30a.m. heading north east to Cheshire. Whilst Ting-a-Ling ended her unbeaten foal and yearling season with a 6th place in a class of thirteen, Wood-Wind had obviously picked up some tips from the Kings Troop about giving your best whilst on parade to impress Mr.Tom Best (Waxwing) enough to warrant him standing firstly Youngstock Champion and then Overall Section B Champion. A great honour indeed at a show which credits itself as having entries only second in number and quality to the Royal Welsh. The various "Brightwells" Welsh breed championships then followed judged by Mr. John Russell (Gartconnel) who selected Wood-Wind as Overall Youngstock and Reserve Overall Welsh Champion to the Section C mare Nebo Rachel. Finally each of the other breed Champions joined the other Welsh representatives to come forward for the judging of the prestigious "Cuddy" Supreme Horse of the Year Show qualifier. Mrs. Dianne Jordan (Moortown Stud) selected the Anglo Arab mare to qualify and our Wood-Wind, (despite pausing for "pee" in front of the judge), as Reserve which was the best result ever for his first appearance in a "Cuddy" qualifier, as he can now enjoy the accolade of the title but also enjoy the summer out rather than being inside and rugged in preparation for the October final. This was Wood-Winds last young stock show appearance and during the long drive home we counted up that some twenty one judges had judged him thru from his first win at the Royal of England as a foal to this Cheshire championship and only one non-panel judge had placed him second! |

BLAENAVON PONY
IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY SHOW We took the two yearlings up to the Mountain top at Blaenavon and they obviously liked the air as Heniarth Beaudacious (Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum Yum) gave the show of his life to lift the highly contested Mountain Pony Youngstock Championship under Mr. Mike Daley (Vale Stud). Heniarth Ting-a-Ling (Lemonshill Top Note x Eyarth Windflower) took the Section B Championship and W.P.C.S. Silver Medal under Chris Gibbons (Rhydspence Stud) and then ended up winning the Supreme Best in Show award, over Lampeter and Royal Welsh winning Cobs and the fantastic lead rein, Bengad Leonotis who we had bought as a foal from Bengad and have seen go from strength to strength with his current owners who took the reserve supreme slot. |

THREE COUNTIES SHOW The Three Counties Show is always a pleasure to attend with it's well laid out rings and clean safe stabling - even better to attend when you do well! We only took the two Section B's Heniarth Wood-Wind and his sister Heniarth Ting-a-Ling and both won their respective classes (see above) under Kathleen James (Highland Stud). Wood-Wind went on to stand Reserve Champion. Meanwhile, in the next door ring, Sarum Rembrandt by Heniarth Quinnell won his colt class and then Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip took the Welsh Mountain Pony Championship. It was a pleasure to see Heniarth Quasar (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) back out on the circuit with new owner Vanessa Compton who was also joined in the HOYS lead rein class by the offspring of Heniarth Mr.Milligan, Heniarth Coron and Heniarth Yarra Glen - all doing great work as ambassadors for the breed. Wood-Wind had one regret after the show. Sadly he was not born bay or brown. We think he really fancied the idea of joining the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery as they assembled right outside his stable and then after the cannon explosions thundered out of the main arena, pulling up, again just outside his stable - all with much clattering of hooves, guns and harness. All very entertaining for a three year old colt to enjoy! |

BEST IN SHOW - SWEDISH STYLE Great to hear that Inger and Johan Beckers Heniarth Mr. Milligan (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Mutters) has been enjoying himself in Sweden by lifting the Best in Show title at the Salstas Summer Show under UK judge "Tweetie" Nimmo, pictured left with Milligan who was shown in the Supreme by Karin Ollson of the Kulltorps Stud. In Sweden each pony receives a written critique from the judge; Milligans went as follows - "Excellent type, good top line, strong second thigh. Very good head and eye, very good front & shoulder, excellent hindquarters. Good bone, slightly upright in pasterns, very good walk, excellent trot, nice straight mover, very well balanced." Reserve Best in Show was the imported Section C stallion Talyllyn Abel shown by Johan! |

HOYS - HOORAY! Fantastic news that Heniarth Coron (left by Pendock Buttonhole x Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina) qualified for the Horse of the Year Show at the Derbyshire Festival of the Horse. "BEAUTY IS, AS BEAUTY DOES" We have always felt that the mares should be capable of performing so it is exciting to see and hear news of them doing well. Heniarth Dilyscious (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) has been doing very well in her first four year old season with four year old Anja Potter-Firth on board recently taking their first mini championship as well as qualification for Equifest. Anja has been busy too with Heniarth Cockatoo (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail) also taking the Mini title at B.S.P.S. Area 3a along with qualification for the David Manning and Premier League finals - on his first outing of the season. Also on her first ridden outing ever, Heniarth Yeeha Sheila (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin) lifted qualification for the N.P.S. Picton Novice Ridden Final partnered on this occasion by India Latter, though destined for a career with young Tegan Perry, produced by Team Thomas at Rowden Farm.
|
| The
following day saw the sun return and it was
great to catch up with the Green family who have
Heniarth Norma Jean (Heniarth Quinnell x
Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip) on lease
(see right) who looked exceptionally
happy looking after young rider Henry. The pair
were pulled top in the novice lead rein, though
were demoted to second place for being a little
unbalanced on the sloping ring; however for a
four year old she did exceptionally well,
something that must have been recognised when
she took the Novice Championship at the recent
Welsh Pony & Cob Society Performance Show. Heniarth Beaudacious also took second place in the Section A yearling colt class, though Ting-a-Ling again won her class and stood Reserve B Champion. This led her to stand Reserve Owner Bred Champion and then eventually Reserve Supreme In-Hand Champion of the Show to Jack Bowerman and the Cob colt Ringside Game Over, (see above). Brynodyn Savannah, also by Heniarth Quinnell won her Picton Novice Ridden qualifying ticket for "Team Courtway" and Tryfel Triumph won the Section A In-Hand Championship for the Cobley Family, being out of Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip. However, it was a great result for Sunwillow Jubilee, also by Heniarth Quip who won the Olympia Ridden qualifier, following in his father's footsteps to the bright lights of London at Christmas time. Huge congratulations to jockey/producer Rebecca Jarvis-Broad and owner Sal Keswani having got Horse of the Year Show and Olympia qualification so early in the season. "Go Squid, go!!!" Back down to earth then with a bang when we had a tyre "blowout" about an hour from home! Luckily, our National Farmers Union roadside assistance kicked in and got us going within the hour so comes highly recommended, especially after our nine hour all night abandonment on the M4 a few years back when we misguidedly used the services of a leading horsebox and trailer insurer. "Go NFU!" Official insurers to the W.P.C.S. |

CARMARTHENSHIRE WELSH PONY & COB
ASSOCIATION SPRING SHOW We had a fantastic day at the Carmarthenshire Association Show taking three homebred ponies and winning with all three. The yearling colt Heniarth Beaudacious (below) was first in for owners John and Linda Harries. He duly won his class. Later in the day Heniarth Ting-a-Ling won, closely followed by her brother Wood-Wind winning his class. Then Ting-a-Ling went into "overdrive" taking the Section B Youngstock Championship, then the B Championship, W.P.C.S. Bronze Medal and National Championships qualifier under Miss. Catryn Bigley (Llanarth Stud). Then under Mr. Bleddyn Pugh (Dirion Stud) she lifted the Overall Yearling Championship; the Supreme Youngstock Championship and then finally the Overall Supreme of the Show! A fantastic result for her first show of the season, made even more special by having our good friend Ingrid with us to take such great photo's to record the day. During all this excitement Windflower was grazing away at Rotherwood, awaiting her scan to see if we might be able to have another member of the family to join us in 2011? |

MOUNTAIN PONY FOALS ARRIVING The 2010 crop of Section A foals by Colne Turbo are almost all here. Heniarth Quail has a grey filly, "Chiff-Chaff" that is her only daughter to date so that will be retained, as will Sunwillow Yasmins going grey filly called "Yesterday". Heniarth Quilt has had a cuddly brown born filly called "Snuggle" that is featured on the For Sale page and Yippee-aye-Yeah has just had a chestnut colt that so far is likely to be named "Shakerattlenroll"! Heniarth Yum-Yum still has a few more weeks to go. The visitors from last year; Abbeybells Sister Philomena has had a filly for Margaret and the Stanley Grange Stud and is likely to be seen out at the shows this summer; Waitwith Connie is still waiting but reported to look likely to deliver any day and Sunwillow Georgina has had a colt for the Molstaberg/Salstas Studs in Sweden. OUT AND ABOUT
JUDGING Obviously it is always an honour to be invited to judge though having first attended the Glanusk Stallion Show some thirty two years ago it was even more special for Richard to be asked to officiate this Spring. With a good entry forward the three year old filly Paddock Aleysha stood out and took the Championship before going right through the day winning the Supreme Filly, Supreme Youngstock and Overall Supreme Champion of the Show for Mr & Mrs Butterworth, handled by Norman Fairbank - a very satisfactory result all round! Photo right; Pleasure Prints AN INTERESTING LINK We came across a BBC archive link recently from an old Brecon County Show which you may find very interesting - are rare insight into times gone by; 1955 Royal Tour, Brecon |

LAMPETER 1 -
VOLCANO 0 After spending a week at a conference in Cannes, South of France Meirion was more than ready to fly home to attend the Lampeter Stallion Show. However, as we all know now the "forces of nature" had other ideas and all flights into the UK were cancelled due to the volcanic ash cloud. Undeterred Meirion and two work colleagues hired the last car available (French trains were on strike that day!) and drove 14 hours up to the port of Caen, via a roundabout detour thru Paris, managed to eventually get a walk on ferry passage and then arrange a driver to collect them in Portsmouth to bring them back to Cardiff Airport, collect the car and finally drive home! All without any chance of sleep. The lengths some people will go to attend a horse show - however the reality was, if they hadn't made the effort he'd still be in Cannes a week later! Leaving home at dawn the following day we reached the show early enough and enjoyed a successful day. The Section B ring was spacious and level, giving every opportunity for all to see what could move and what couldn't! Luckily Heniarth Wood-Wind (right and below) won his class and was awarded the Aeron Challenge Trophy for the Best Opposite sex to the Champion. Heniarth Beaudacious placed 7th out of an entry of 25 yearling colts. Many thanks due once again to Ingrid Delaitre who took these fantastic photographs to record the day. |

WOOD-WINDS FIRST FOAL There was great excitement at Meirion's parents Rhoson Stud with the birth of Heniarth Wood-Winds first foal out of Rhoson Si-Lwli (Eyarth Harlequin x Rhoson Tlws), a sister to Royal Welsh Champion Rhoson Shem. Pictured right, at eight hours old, the as yet un-named chestnut born filly was big and strong and very pleasing so it will be great to see how she matures over time. Wood-Wind has a further five foals due in Wales, France and Holland. ON THE MEND Many thanks for all the best wishes for Peg and her bad paw. She's now back to her usual self and attended Lampeter Stallion Show, minus her leg bandage. She felt so well that she couldn't resist a fracas with Betty French's JRT, Rosie. Sorry Betty!!! |

MR.MILLIGAN STOCK COMING OF AGE The first four year olds by Inger Becker's Heniarth Mr. Milligan (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Mutters by Revel Playsome) are beginning to make a mark out under saddle. Pantycoed Little Owl bred by Louise Parry and purchased in Fayre Oaks 2009, has had a great run of success for the Landon Family, amongst many other wins he was Mini Champion at the Ponies(UK) West Midland Show and then won his first Royal International qualifier at Stretcholt. Meanwhile young Anja Potter (right) had a debut win on young Heniarth Dilyscious (ex Heniarth Yum Yum) at the Scottish & Northern W.P.C.A Spring Show in North Yorkshire and looks set to have a great career before returning to Heniarth as a brood mare in a few years time. |

SECOND ROYAL INTERNATIONAL TICKET Two International qualifying tickets in one week is some going, however just that happened to Tristan Chandler on the Heniarth Quip daughter, Heniarth Cupcake (left). Following on from their success in the First Ridden qualifier at the B.S.P.S. Winter Championships (see below) the pair then qualified for the Small Breeds Junior Ridden Final at the Northern Counties Pony Association Derbyshire. On a roll now! N.P.S. DRESSAGE FINALS Another Heniarth Quip son to be doing well is Sunwillow Jubilee. Proud owner Sal Keswani reports, "Just thought you would like to know he was Welsh A best of breed for both the Preliminary Open and Novice Open sections today at the National Pony Society Dressage Finals at Addington.. He was also 4th overall in the Novice Small M&M class with 72.1% which for a pony who can't concentrate for more than 60 seconds was something close to a miracle!" A second Quip son, Glynhaul Brocato had also qualified for the finals but the realisation that regular jockey Angharad Harries was just too tall for him prevented him from attending. However, Angharad, who rode Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah for us back in 2005 competed on her Connemara Corellian Jacob and ended the day as the Reserve Supreme Champion. Great result for NPS Area 28. Well done to Angharad and mother Jane who teaches her. |

FIRST FOAL, FIRST SHOW -
NOW FIRST AID?! Peg has been in the wars. After a major, futile hunting attempt in the hay barn last week when she was certain she was on the trail of some little critter, Peg developed an infection in one paw that resulted in her having to have an operation at the vets. Returning home with a major bandage on she certainly felt sorry for herself but found some comfort in her friends. The "pony rope toy", the "rubber chicken", the "half chewed oink less pig" and the "woolly hedgehog with the annoying laugh". Looks as if the critter in the hay barn won on this occasion, but Peg will be back! |

FIRST FOAL OF THE
YEAR It was a great cause for celebration when, without warning Heniarth Quail delivered a healthy filly foal by Colne Turbo. Not usually having foals born this early at the end of March and being such miserable weather it has been a challenge to get mother and daughter out in the paddock for any length of time. However Jack Russell terrier Peg, (left) was keen to introduce her to the "great outdoors". The next foal due is in approximately one month from now, so Chiff Chaff will certainly have an advantage. |
FIRST SHOW OF THE YEAR The Glamorgan Welsh Pony and Cob Association Spring Show saw us leave the chocolate eggs at home and venture out on Easter Sunday for our first show of 2010. ![]() We took Heniarth Beaudacious, right, (Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum Yum) who was second in the yearling colt class for John and Linda Harries, gaining the first sire ratings points for Turbo as well as receiving some very favourable comments from knowledgeable onlookers. Heniarth Wood-Wind, above, won his class; took the Section B Championship and W.P.C.S. Bronze medal; the qualification for the Brightwells National Championships and then ended his busy day by standing Reserve Supreme of the Show. What better excuse to celebrate than return home and eat loads more chocolate! |

WINTER CHAMPS SUCCESS It was great to hear that two Heniarth bred ponies met with success at the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships recently. In the evening performance final of the Winter Heritage Mini Championship Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) was second with Tristan Chandler. Then Heniarth Bedlam (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quilt) was tenth for Poppy Burnell. However, the following day Tristan and Cupcake pulled out all the stops, turning the tables on several of the top performing ponies in the country to win the Royal International Horse Show Heritage First Ridden qualifier. After a tie on points with the second placed Dartmoor Dykes Lily Meade who had been Supreme the night before, Tristan won out on having a higher ride mark. Third was Roseisle Samantha, grand-daughter of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr. Rosmarche Heather by Heniarth Quip was fourth in the Lead Rein section for new rider Jessica Walby. Fantastic results for all so early in the season when everybody is keen to get qualified. Very well done! VÄLKOMMEN HEM - GEORGINA ARRIVES AT MOLSTABERG Great to hear news of Sunwillow Georgina's safe arrival in Sweden, courtesy of Owen Jones, Nebo Horse Transport. Even more fitting being greeted by one of Per Aschan's Welsh Springer Spaniels! Good luck to Per and Elisabeth Rudbeck. We're sure Georgina will give them as much pleasure as she gave us here at Heniarth. |

COVER MODEL Not to be outdone by Turbo fronting the new German DVD (see below) Heniarth Wood-Wind appears on the cover of the latest Swedish Welsh Pony Yearbook, courtesy of editor in chief, Inger Becker and ace French photographer Ingrid Delaitre. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to sign copies if you see him out and about at some of the shows this year. INTERESTING NEW WEBSITE Joanna Ralston of the Cushag Stud on the Isle of Man has recently started compiling this interesting site, "set up in 2010 to share photos & breeding of the Welsh Mountain Ponies in many of our pedigrees. This website has been set up following the success of the Welsh Cobs Information website." Take a look: http://www.welshmountainpo Joanna and her mother are eagerly awaiting the first foals of Nantdywyll Fflint who they purchased from us two years ago |

SÄKER RESA GEORGINA - (Safe trip for the non-Swedish speakers!)
After great consideration we have sold the Heniarth Quip daughter Sunwillow Georgina. She travels to her new home in Sweden at the end of March. Proud new owners are Elisabeth Rudbeck of the Salstas Stud and Per Aschan of the Molstaberg Stud, who already has the Quip daughter, Molstaberg Celline, a half sister to the ridden stallion Heniarth Coron. The decision to part with her was made easier knowing that she would be regally looked after at their long established and prestigious studs.
"We are so very excited about Georgina and that she will come to Sweden !!! " says Elisabeth who is presently awaiting foals by Molstaberg Cartier, a son of Heniarth Yarra Glen and Celline by Quip. Georgina's 2010 foal by Colne Turbo will carry the Molstaberg prefix.
Georgina has been a tremendous ambassador for Heniarth, since winning the Royal Welsh as a three year old, followed in the same year by becoming Champion and Reserve Supreme at the Winter Fair. She had a glittering career under saddle giving young riders Daniel Filmer, Alexandra Hollings and Jess and Poppy Duncalf such an enormous amount of pleasure and confidence.
Her daughter, Heniarth Norma Jean by Heniarth Quinnell has been retained and is already making great strides in the early stages of her ridden career for the Green Family, before eventually returning to Heniarth to replace Georgina as a valued member of the brood mare band.

BEAUDACIOUS.......![]() We are pleased to have welcomed home the yearling colt, Heniarth Beaudacious (Colne Turbo x Heniarth Yum Yum by Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin) from his new owners, John & Linda Harries of the Hope Stud. Beau will campaign a few shows with us this summer and for only being March, he looks to be shaping up into a very correct and attractive colt. |

LAMBS COME FIRST Before we even start thinking about foals being born we have had the small flock of Blue Face Leicester Sheep to lamb and all has gone relatively well this season, with an excellent crop of quality lambs by the new ram, Carryhouse "Tony". Perhaps we will show one of these at the Royal Welsh this year instead of ponies?! |
| BRIEF TRIP TO
THE NETHERLANDS We took some time out from the winter chores to attend the two day "Centrale Hengstenkeuring" or stallion grading in Holland where, as you can see, we were made very "Welkom" despite the bitterly cold weather. ![]() This was the sixth time we've attended this event and it's always interesting to see how the Dutch enthusiasts are working with both the imported and domestic bloodlines they have established on the continent. As ever, we found ourselves not in complete agreement with the three man Jury that officiate at this event but then we can't all like the same thing, even if we are working from the same breed description! Ponies that stood out for us were the Section B Paddock Marquis (Moelview Charmer Boy x Eyarth Almira by Carwed Charmer) and the Section C Arvalon Dion (Synod King Cole x Nebo Carina by Menai Rancher), neither of which found much favour with the Jury. However, twenty year old Springbourne Glide (Springbourne Claret x Springbourne Glenys) looked fantastic and his three year old son, Roetsenest's Santa Fe impressed everybody with his stylish movement to stand Reserve Supreme of the Show. The enthusiasm for the event, coupled with the atmosphere created with music and crowd participation makes the two days of inspection very entertaining. Breeders from Wales, France, Germany and Denmark came together this year to enjoy the hospitality. It was great to see a seven page article on Heniarth in the 2010 Jaarboek (the Dutch version of the UK Journal) and the German DVD (see below) on continuous play in the exhibition hall featuring Heniarth ponies so once the show was over we went on the road to catch up with some of the ponies that we have recently exported; |

A TRUE "MOUNTAIN" PONY! There aren't any Mountains in Holland that we know of so Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) has managed to make his own little hill in his paddock at the Vennebos Stud (see left). Now just turning three years old Yeats is fulfilling all the potential he showed when he was a big winner in the UK as a yearling. It sounds as if Rhode has big plans for him this year with mares to cover and hopefully a few shows to go to so we hope to see and hear a lot more of him this summer. His 3/4 sister HENIARTH DILYSCIOUS (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Heniarth Yum Yum) is working well at the Whisperdale Stud in North Yorkshire where she is due to come out this season as a Lead Rein. Both keeping the family flag flying high! - "quality is a Quest" |

VISIT TO THE LYWIMAR STUD It was great to be able to visit with Wilma Bijma and Lijkele Pasveer at their Lywimar Stud to see Heniarth Thingumajig (Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) and her colt foal, Lywimar Top Note by Lemonshill Top Note. Luckily we had Robert Hoeke to show us the way and despite the cold morning snow we had a tremendous welcome. ![]() "Thingy" is of course a full sister to our own Tittle Tattle and "little Top Note" is a three quarter brother to both Wood-Wind and Ting-a-Ling. It was great to see how she has already matured and and how she is so very appreciated by Wilma. She is now in foal to Shamrock Lake Backstage Imperial, a full blood brother to Eyarth Rio, so that should be a very interesting addition. STAL VECHTZICHTS Our last stop was with Remco and Sandra at their Vechtzichts Stud where again we were able to catch up on plenty of news and enjoy their company until the early hours. The following morning, again in bitter temperatures we saw a lovely "family" of ponies, building on the bloodlines of Revel Cymbol (Revel Hallmark x Revel Cover Girl by Revel Chelsea Fan) and Springbourne Hyflyn (Springbourne Caregan x Springbourne Hyfwyn by Treharne Tomboy) currently being utilised to great effect with the use of Friars Divine Spirit (Knolton Daylight x Friars Gold Flash by Penual Jacinth). Both he and all of his offspring were covering the ground with eye catching style despite the frozen conditions. Soon enough it was time to fly home, with plenty to think about. On arrival the temperature in Wales seemed almost "tropical" after our brief stay in the Netherlands. |

HOLLY RETURNS HOME It is great news to report that Helen Myers has re-established her Rosmarche Stud at her new property near St.Clears, Carmarthenshire. Therefore after several years with us Rosmarche Holly has returned to Helen along with several more homebred ponies. Good luck to Helen and many thanks for letting us produce Horatio, now in Australia and Hobart in Sweden. |
ONE HECK OF A SPONSORED RIDE!!! We knew that Megan Lewis of the Cwrt-y-Cadno Stud was undertaking a ride across the Far East but the full extent of her journey was only made fully aware to us when we checked in to her website and blog. It's well worth a look, with the ultimate aim to ride from the site of the Beijing Olympics all the way to the London Olympics in 2012 - check out; www.thelonghorseride.com or www.thelonghorseride.blogspot.com |

FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING? It's always a sure sign of Spring being on the way when the first bulbs start appearing through the cold soil, closely followed by the arrival of the W.P.C.S. Journal! It was great to see three offspring of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr in the "Prizewinner" section, endorsing the news that he has once again come out on top in the Performance Sire Rating's competition for Lead Rein/First Ridden ponies. An added thrill was to see the brothers Heniarth Quip and Heniarth Quinnell coming in the top twelve of the In-Hand Sire Ratings league with the top placings going to stallions with twice as many progeny being shown. |
A GOOD CHOICE Our decision to support the Society for the Welfare of Horses & Ponies this Christmas instead of adding more to the profits of the Royal Mail was a good decision. We recently had a thank you card from their secretary saying our donation was going towards their hay appeal - "One of our long term supporters up on Gelligaer Mountain contacted us yesterday to say that over 100 ponies up on the Mountain have been without food for 2 weeks due to the snow. The owners have not been feeding them as they promised to do in bad weather. Our supporter managed to get hold of a farmer who put some bales of hay out for the ponies yesterday and we are paying for the hay. So at least the ponies are now getting something." - Money well spent! |

FRONTS GERMAN VIDEO On one of the relatively few dry, warm days we had during last summer some folks from the German IG Welsh Society came to us as part of their trip filming Ponies and Cobs in Wales - the DVD is already being advertised in Germany and features UK studs such as Hope, Three B's, Cross-Foxes, Cadlan Valley & Gwenllan. It was a great surprise to see the advertised cover featuring Colne Turbo, accompanied by daughter Heniarth Featherbed - we now can't wait to view it ourselves. More information is on the German site: http://www.ig-welsh.de/ STOP PRESS - We've now seen the finished article and it looks great - only available in Dutch & German for the time being, but an English version is planned soon. HAVING FUN "DOWN UNDER" While here in the UK we've been struggling with minus degree temperatures and frozen pipes the Welsh enthusiasts in Australia have been showing at their prestigious Victorian All-Welsh Show in temperatures reaching 43 degree centigrade. UK judges were Owen Jones ( A, C and D) and Kerry Wainright (B and Part-Welsh). Excellent photos by Julie Wilson can be seen on the Horsedeals website: http://www.horsedeals.com.au/gallery.php?restrict=&showID=9721 It's worth a look to warm yourselves up! |

NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY/BAILEYS HORSE FEEDS RIDDEN MOUNTAIN & MOORLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS, OLYMPIA, LONDON 2010 It was a pleasure to witness fellow Welsh Mountain Pony Waitwith Westwind partnered by young Alice Barr receive the Heniarth Trophy, in memory of Sunwillow Quest, for the highest placed Junior Rider in the Olympia finals just before Christmas, a trophy previously won by older sister Isobel. In doing so they were also named Best of Breed and fourth place overall. A great achievement for all that qualified throughout the year. Photo left: "Tweetie" Nimmo presents Alice Barr with the Heniarth Trophy NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY AREA 28 CHRISTMAS WINTER WOOLY SHOW Can you believe the day after Boxing Day we went to a show! Heniarth Norma Jean went along as part of her education and took the Welsh Youngstock Championship - her photo is on the For Sale page, though she is only for loan! |

MERRY CHRISTMAS
Instead of sending Christmas cards this year we have decided that the money we would ordinarily have spent on postage will instead be sent as a donation to the Society for the Welfare of the Horses and Ponies, near Monmouth;
"30 years ago, foals were being sold at markets for a couple of
pounds and exported to Spain or Greece for slaughter. Many died on
the way. The Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies started
when Sheila Richards, our founder, bought some of these foals. Any
which showed potential were reared but the majority, which were
thought unlikely to make anything useful, were put down. That may
seem harsh but it was a kinder fate than the alternative.

ROYAL WELSH WINTER FAIR The Turbo foals, Yowza (left) and Featherbed (right) were greatly admired by enthusiasts at the Winter Fair but sadly not sufficiently by the judge to receive their just rewards - but then that's showing! On the other hand, as darkness fell, Ting-a-Ling entered the ring to win, take the Reserve Section B Champion and the WPCS Medal which was a great honour under breed expert Ann Bale-Williams. A fantastic day for her young sire, Lemonshill Top Note who had three prizewinners in the top five places. Many thanks to Ingrid Delaitre for once again taking such great photos. |

WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE! What a great weekend I had in Finland at the invitation of the Finnish Welsh Pony & Cob Society where I was asked to go to give a presentation on "Producing Ponies for the Show Ring". As the plane dropped through the clouds into Helsinki airport it became quite apparent that I had arrived in nothing less than a "Winter Wonderland". As the planes awaiting take off were getting jet sprayed with anti-freeze and the snow was piling up by the runway, I did wonder if just bringing carry-on luggage was in fact a good idea. I could be up for a longer stay. I needn't have worried as a snowfall that would have rendered the UK to a standstill meant nothing to the Finn's so complete with studded tyres and heated car seats we headed out to the Country. My B&B at Ilona Pykalainen's Moondelight Stud was greeted by two new pig friends who happily live in the house and act like dogs, a new herd of Alpacas with their eyes that many a Mountain pony would be happy to have, as well as many contented ponies and cobs. Both Ilona and Leena Kahisaari, who took these fun photos, are to be congratulated for all the good work they are doing in promoting the best of Welsh Ponies and Cobs in Finland, as well as their great hospitality. Now back in Wales it feels like Spring has come early... if only? |

THE
MORNING AFTER Its been many years since we have attended the Welsh National Foal Show at Builth Wells, in fact the last time was when Heniarth Quilt was a foal so this year we returned with her fourth foal, and first filly, Heniarth Featherbed. Out of some 32 Section fillies forward we were very pleased to stand 7th. Then we went into the "to make a Lead Rein" class and she duly came out top of the six forward. To our delight she was then pulled forward as Pony Breeding Champion over and above all the plaited up ones. A great result. The first Champion by Colne Turbo and hopefully something to live up to for new owner, Liz Milner. |
|
|
Heniarth Ting-a-Ling was still looking glamorous
from her time at HOYS and she won a big class of Section B fillies and
went Champion to add to her wins at the Royal of England and the
National. She's keeping her full brother Wood-Wind on his toes! |

ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE If you scroll down to the bottom of this news page you will read again the thrill of seeing young Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) doing so well for her young rider Tristan Chandler. Never did we think that by the end of her first four year old season the pair would be galloping in Open competition. In two Winter shows they have gained qualification for the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships next Spring in Novice and Open First Ridden as well as Novice Ridden. Then at the B.S.P.S. Heritage Championships she went into the Open Restricted section, won her class and stood Reserve Overall Champion to the Connemara. As proud mother Stephanie writes; "The most nervous point was them going into the championship which was an evening performance with five different sections in . But I should not of worried as she looked after him every step of the way and did an amazing gallop and to top the night he finished reserve." Cupcake is now on a well deserved Winter holiday. We're very proud of them both. We also understand that Rosmarche Heather, also by Heniarth Quip, continued her winning ways with new owners, taking one of the Mini Championships on the Lead Rein. Well done! |
Many thanks for the compliments we have received from many quarters on how well the mares looked at the Horse of the Year Show, it is great to know that their appearances meant so much to so many onlookers. Both "girls" are now more than happy to be out with their "gang" and covered in mud. |

|
| A GRAND DAY OUT Well we went to the Horse of the Year Show with the thought it was going to be an expensive Grand Parade and sadly our miserable HOYS luck continued with low placings in the Cuddy In-Hand final of the Year. The fact that the "girls" looked and went well, together with the fact that they were the only two Native females in the Section, that had each qualified first time out without travelling miles around the Country to appear was some consolation. I guess you couldn't have all the Welsh breeds at the head of the line? Many thanks indeed to our expert foal handlers, Martin Jones and Lowri Jones (no relation, except to Shirley Bassey) who became the fourth generation of her family to show a Mountain Pony at the Horse of the Year Show. Our chief "man on the ground" Ashley Porter who will be glad to get back to Australia with the added skill of "strapping quarters" and of course John & Glenys "Rhoson" who offer unequalled support whatever the outcome. Congratulations to all our friends, be they breeders, trainers, producers and/or exhibitors of successful animals, may their luck rub off on us another year! |

EYARTH WINDFLOWER ![]() Windflower's appearance at the Horse of the Year Show marked her retirement from the show ring. With six consecutive wins at the Royal Welsh Show and three Female Championships, two Royal of England Supremes and Supreme Broodmare at the National Pony Society Championships she was in fact only ever lightly shown. Only three Judges in her career failed to fully acknowledge her quality, adding two seconds and one third in her lifetime, with all her wins being under different judges bar one individual. Thank you Jessie Parry-Williamson, her breeder, for enabling us to have such fun with such a great pony |

The far left is Heniarth Horatio (Heniarth Quip x Rosmarche Holly) in 2008 and the centre photo is the 2009 version Heniarth Hobart, both brothers of course to 2009 Royal Welsh winner Rosmarche Holly Bough. Horatio's new home in Australia can be viewed at www.osorystud.com and Hobart will be joining Springbourne Pioneer at www.linhagens.zoomin.se . |

TWO YOUNG GELDINGS With a whole career planned in advance for them it's encouraging to see these two homebred geldings just getting out and about to see the world so they're accepting of all situations when the time comes to carry a little person. The yearling Heniarth Kookaburra (Heniarth Quip x Heniarth Quail, left) has been a star for young Ellie Morris and looks like he'll follow in big brother footsteps. Three year old Heniarth Tutti Frutti (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Heniarth Quaint) has been carefully brought on by the Whisperdale Stud and lets hope he'll be a credit to his illustrious father. |

YOUNG PONIES It's great to get news and reports of youngsters starting out with young ponies by our stallions. Far left and above, are two from the first crop by Heniarth Yarra Glen, Waxwing Milk Tray and Roseisle Witches Glen respectively, both being successful in their first years. Also, centre, Heniarth Cockatoo by Cascob Silver Ghost out of Heniarth Quail, seen here being third in the HOYS qualifier at NPS Area 4 with top conformation marks. |
| SWEDISH
NATIONAL SHOW After spending a day judging at a wet and muddy National Pony Show in Malvern we got on a plane to travel to Stockholm for Richard to officiate at the Swedish National Show. Arriving at Skavsta we were confronted by a mini heat wave - the likes we haven't seen in the UK for years! First stop was to travel into town to buy sunglasses and shorts! It was great to travel with Inger Becker to Ekbacken to re-acquaint ourselves with Mr. Milligan (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Mutters, right) who has matured into a lovely stamp of pony, reminiscent of photographs we've seen of his grand-sire Revel Playsome. During our stay it was with great pride we were able to see some of his and Heniarth Yarra Glen's offspring beginning to make an impact on the Swedish pony scene. The show was held at Elisabeth Rudbecks impressive Salsta's Stud and this is where we met up with Gwyn Berry who was to judge the Cobs, again in hot bright sunshine, a complete contrast to our summer at home. On the first day we came together to judge the various Supremes that were on offer and on each occasion we were unanimous in our decision which was nice. The second day Richard judged the ridden classes and whilst the turnout was a little different from back home, the riding and schooling standards were extremely high. All too soon the trip came to an end. Sweden is a beautiful country and the people we have met there have became great friends that we enjoy spending time with, sitting on their veranda's, chatting about ponies, dogs, food and wine and above all else, laughing. Can't wait to return. More photos from the show at; Hastfotograf |

| NATIONAL WELSH SHOW The two "Cuddy" girls took a day out at the Shrewsbury Nationals and had a great time. Eyarth Windflower won her class in the mornings Brightwells Silver Medal classes and her foal, Heniarth Ting-a-Ling won a good class before her mother went on to take the Section Championship. What made this even more special was that this year was the Section B's turn to receive the Weston Park Trophy that were were thrilled to win with Cascob Silver Ghost for John and Linda Harries when it was first offered for the Mountain Ponies back in 2004. Due to the big entry in the Section B's we only just managed to get Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah into the ring in time to compete among some thirty other qualified ponies for the National Section A title. After exhaustive judging we were delighted to be called forward as Reserve National Champion to Nerwyn Letitia. Next stop Horse of the Year Show.......................? HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO - Brynodyn Sirius (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Brynodyn Scarlet) who won his class and lifted the Mini Mountain & Moorland Championship at the Royal International Horse Show, in this his first four year old year under saddle for the Landon Family of Linksbury and also to Sunwillow Jubilee (Heniarth Quip x Sunwillow Dido) who won his Intermediate class at Northleach, qualified for the Horse of the Year Show under saddle at Thames Valley and won his class at Ponies (UK) Summer Championships as well as standing 10th in the Royal Welsh junior in-hand stallions and siring the 3rd place yearling filly in Amilas Cassiopeia.

THE ROYAL WELSH 2009 Thank heavens that the majority of the Section B classes were held on the first, relatively dry day of the show as things certainly went down hill from there on in. Where could the pleasure have been for those handlers and riders slopping through mud soup ? It would be wrong to say that we weren't disappointed to have Wood-winds previously unbeaten record ended as we, and many others, hold him in such high regard. However, second at the Royal Welsh is still very good and let's hope we'll be back to "give it a go" several more times in the future. Well done to Mrs. Tolliday for winning with her homebred colt Dymock Kickstart, shown by Colin Tibbey. Together with Ingrid Delaitre's fantastic photographs we can look back on a day that won Wood-wind many more admirers. The end of the week saw his two Continental visiting mares return home, scanned in foal, so next year will be exciting, not only for Rhoson and Crawel in the U.K. but for the Ysselvliedts Stud in Holland and Haras de Laurore in France. Thanks to Peter de Rade for showing Wood-wind in his class and congratulations on his very successful show and the "high-point" that followed, but you can ask Peter and Suze about that!? It was great to see Rod Lewis's three year old filly, Rosmarche Holly Bough battle through the mud to win the three year old filly class making that the fifth of Quip's progeny to get a red R.W.A.S. rosette. We ended the show with rosettes for each of the ponies we took though it was down to Heniarth Coron (left, Pendock Buttonhole x Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina) who managed to get the Heniarth prefix engraved on some Royal Welsh silverware this time, taking the Velvet Challenge Trophy for the highest placed ridden Mountain pony for a second time, enabling Heniarth to have appeared on it for the fifth time in the last six years! Thanks and congratulations go to Terry and "Team Chesmere". |

KENT COUNTY We have enjoyed our trips to Kent County Show in the past, albeit the other side of the country, it is such a well run and pleasant show that it is worth the drive. After Windflowers exciting success at the Royal of England we decided to leave her at home and just took Heniarth Yum Yum and her foal Heniarth Beaudacious. We were really pleased with the way Yum Yum went, having not been away from home overnight before, and she duly won her class and took the Championship. Her colt became the first County winning offspring of Colne Turbo by lifting a red rosette in a good foal class. (see left) We then ventured into the Overall Mountain and Moorland Championship, a title that her mother Yasmin had previously won back in 2000 and were were pleased to stand Reserve to the very handsome Connemara stallion. Unbelievably we were pulled forward in the final four of the Cuddy Championship qualifying round. Not too bad for Yum Yums first season as a brood mare - though I think she's more than happy to be back out in the field with the "family". |
| ANOTHER REMARKABLE DAY We can't quite believe that we have qualified a second pony for the "Cuddy" In-Hand Championships at the Horse of the Year Show! Eyarth Windflower, now twelve years old, made her seasonal show ring debut at the Royal of England under Stephen Howard (Boston Stud) who selected her as his Champion, also giving her foal, Heniarth Ting-a-Ling by Lemonshill Top Note first in her class, making it the third year running that her Top Note offspring have won at the Royal, following Wood-winds success in 2007/08. We forwent the opportunity to compete in the Overall Mountain & Moorland Championship to keep her fresh for the Cuddy challenge which she, and foal, took in their stride to eventually be called forward as Elizabeth Morgan's (Greenacres) choice to collect the prestigious qualifier. We truly feel that if ever a pony deserved to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show it is Windflower who has been such a great mare for us and was denied her opportunity of appearing at the final when she qualified at the Royal Welsh back in 2002 due to a conflict of interest with one of the final judges. Congratulations and many thanks go to Jessie and Joseph Parry-Williamson who bred her. The show had added success when Rhoson Mandolin (Steehorst Kyro x Rhoson Sipsi)won his yearling colt class for Rob and Pam Doughty and Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell whon her class in the Mountain Ponies. |

Medal and "Brightwells" National Championship qualifiying ticket, four years after her last appearance when she was Youngstock Champion at the Royal Welsh Show. She ended thed ay by being called forward as Reserve Supreme of the Show. Heniarth Question, her uncle, also won the stallion class. |
| A SHOW TO
REMEMBER The Three Counties Show at Malvern in Worcestershire was definitely a show to remember when Heniarth Yippee - aye - Yeah ( right, Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin by Pendock Legend) gave her best effort to lift the Mountain Pony Championship on the Friday and then came back on the Sunday afternoon to secure the coveted Supreme In-Hand Championship and qualifier for the Cuddy Supreme at the Horse of the Year Show - the first Welsh Pony or Cob to have qualified this season. With Richard off judging in Surrey on the Sunday the help of Martin Jones was once again enlisted to handle the foal, and between them Meirion and he came home with the spoils. A rare moment and a great honour. Many thanks for the messages of congratulations we have received and sincere thanks to John and Lindsey Milligan who entrusted us with their prize stallion Pandy Tudyr who worked so well with our mares. Heniarth Norma Jean, a double Sunwillow Quest grand-daughter, (Heniarth Quinnell ex Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip) was third in the large 2/3year old filly class that saw second place going to Brynodyn Savannah, again a grand-daughter of Sunwillow Quest and the winner and eventual Reserve Champion to the Quest great-grand-daughter, Thistledown Paradise who was previously Champion at the Royal Bath & West a few weeks earlier. ABERYSTWYTH SHOW Heniarth Question (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) scored a good win at Aberystwyth or Ceredigion County Show as it's now known, eventually standing Reserve Champion for the W.P.C.S. Silver Medal. Rosmarche Holly Bough and Cwm-Meudwy Adnod both took second prizes and valuable sire rating points for Heniarth Quip, whislt Syfynwy Waterfall, again by Quip won the Lead Rein class. Quip now has three offspring qualified under saddle for the Royal International Horse Show that we know of. Rosmarche Heather in the Lead Rein, Heniarth Cupcake in the First Ridden and Rosmarche Holly Sprig in the Open. |

SUPREME OF SHOW Heniarth Cockatoo (pictured left, Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail) lifted the Supreme Ridden Pony of the Show recently with his great performances in both Lead Rein and First Ridden classes at the Northern All Welsh Silver Medal Show at Weatherby Racecourse, still at only four years of age. He is pictured here with young Anja Potter aboard but he was ridden at Weatherby by her brother Jack in First Ridden and Anna Tuer in the Lead Rein for the Whisperdale Stud - he's obviously following in his mothers great hoofprints. |

| THINGAMAJIG IN THE NETHERLANDS Great news from Wilma Bijpas in Holland that Heniarth Thingamajig (Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) has given birth to this smart colt foal by Lemonshill Top Note, named Lwyimar Top Note, (photo right) already destined to become their stud stallion of the future and of course a three-quarter brother to Heniarth Wood-Wind. |

| DRESSAGE PONIES We read with great interest on the W.P.C.S. website of the success of Sunwillow Gundegai in the National Pony Society/Top Spec Dressage Championships at Addington Manor recently. We were instrumental in producing Gundegai when his mother Sunwillow Bellona was resident here at Heniarth and his sire Brierwood Constable was an elderly pony on loan to the Joiners Stud from Charles and Sandra Seward. Bellona is of course a daughter of Sunwillow Quest. We now hear that Glynhaul Brocato, by Heniarth Quip ( out of Quest) has just qualified for the next NPS/Top Spec Championships, ridden by Angharad Harries for owner breeder Angela Jones. A great result confirming the saying that, "Beauty is.. as beauty does." STOP PRESS : Brocato has just qualified for the National Pony Society/Picton Novice Championship 2009 |

COTHI BRIDGE SHOW In hot, glorious weather we enjoyed a good day out at Cothi Bridge Agricultural Show with Heniarth Wood-Wind (left) taking the Section B Championship and the W.P.C.S. Silver Medal on his second outing of the season. Even better this time was that we remembered to enter Heniarth Question and he went on to stand third in the largest Section A stallion class we've seen for a long time and then took the National Pony Society Silver Medal Championship at the end of the day. As you can see on the homepage he was joined by his brother Heniarth Quinnell who stood second to the winning Dukes Hill Darcy, all three stallions going directly back to Sunwillow Bernina! CONSISTENCY IS GOOD.... Quinnell has been stuck with "seconditis" lately at Devon County and the Royal Bath & West though in the best of company, however speaking volumes for him are his stock that are winning at the same shows. Sarum Rembrandt winning at both County Shows and Brynodyn Savannah winning at Devon County and taking the Reserve Championship for the third year in succession, home produced by her breeders Keith and Ann Hughes. We gather Quinnell is soon to return to the Sarum Stud and enjoy a summer of producing yet more winning stock for Stuart & Annie Franklin for Adam Fletcher to show. Many thanks all for flying the "Heniarth flag" whilst we stayed closer to home. |

| ALL ARRIVED SAFELY The last weekend in May saw the last of our foals delivered safe and sound with a super grey filly from Heniarth Yeeha Sheila by Colne Turbo. We are delighted with the amount of bone and good fronts that Turbo has left us, together with a bit of added colour. Above right is the dun colt out of Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah, named Heniarth Schumacher (seven times Formula 1 Racing Driving Champion!) Above left is Heniarth Ting-a-Ling, the filly from Eyarth Windflower by Lemonshill Top Note. |

RIGHT ON TIME You may have seen the new look W.P.C.S Calendar for 2010 on sale already. We were pleased to see this great photo of Heniarth Quinnell on the cover when he was galloping in the sea at Poppit Sands, Cardigan with India Latter. The photo was taken by India's mum, Christine, who either had a good zoom lens or very wet feet! GROWING UP The photo on the right was taken by Hilde Frissen-Van Wilderode from Belgium of the two year old Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) taken at the Vennebos Stud Open Day recently when over a hundred people came to view the ponies. Hilde's own ponies, Rhydgwillim Dabble and Stortebeckers Gameboy appear in harness as the January picture in the 2010 calendar. |

| CARMARTHENSHIRE ASSOCIATION SHOW We had a great day in cold, wet and windy weather at the Carmarthenshire W.P.C.A. Spring Show. Colne Turbo ventured out as his last outing before going out with the mares for the summer and collected the W.P.C.S. Bronze Medal for standing Youngstock and Reserve Overall Champion to Dukes Hill Darcy in the Mountain Ponies. He then went on to take the Supreme Youngstock title of the show. Heniarth Wood-Wind was Youngstock Champion and W.P.C.S. Bronze Medal winner in the Section B's for the second year running, both Sections being judged by Dewi Evans, Hilin Stud, with both boys qualifying for the "Brightwells" National Championships. Thanks to Peter de Rade for showing Wood-Wind. Heniarth Norma Jean (Heniarth Quinnell x Sunwillow Georgina) stood third on her show ring debut in the biggest class of the day, the three year old fillies and Heniarth Tittle Tattle maintained her "seconditis" in the Section B's, this time to a different Royal Welsh winner - so she's keeping her "end up!" Over in the Ridden ring, the lead-rein Heniarth Davey Crockett (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Baledon Miss Dior) was Mini Champion and at the end of the day was named as the Supreme Ridden Champion of the Show. Well done to the John family. The only down side to the day was that we had taken Heniarth Question (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) for Rod Lewis www.Cwm-Meudwy.com to the show and due to a complete mis-understanding he wasn't entered! Major ooops!!! So, therefore, we have pleasure in posting his picture (right, taken by Rhode Thielen) as he remained the cleanest and driest at the end of a long and successful day! |

GLANUSK 2009 We only took Heniarth Tittle Tattle (left by Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) to Glanusk this year and she took a very creditable second place in a good class, "sandwiched" in between two past Royal Welsh winners so we were quite pleased with that. Photo by Rhode Thielen. YARRA STOCK IN SWEDEN We hear from the Eckbacken Stud that the stock by Heniarth Yarra Glen in Sweden are really making an impact with five of his youngsters gaining an unprecedented total of seven of the highest calibre Diploma gradings this Spring, with some getting 10 out of 10 for movement. COCKATOO CONTINUES........ Congratulations to young Heniarth Cockatoo (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail) who scored a good win in the Lead Rein class at White Rose County. We belive his 3/4 brother, Heniarth Bedlam was fourth in the same class too. A great result for them both in their fouryear old first season. |

CUPCAKE QUALIFIES FOR THE ROYAL
INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW![]() On their first attempt at a Royal International qualifying class, four year old Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) and Tristan Chandler won their class and then went Mini Champion at B.S.P.S. Area 15 Show. This win also means they qualify for the Champion of Champions at the B.S.P.S. Summer Championships. Fantastic result for all involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| BEDLAM DOES GOOD When we were out at Lampeter, young Heniarth Bedlam (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quilt by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr) made his show ring debut at the National Pony Society Area 4 Show in Yorkshire, winning the Novice Lead Rein class for Jane Burnell and family. Well done, off to a great start.................... SWITCHING BRIDLES Heniarth Quinnell has switched from a double bridle to an in-hand bridle for the first part of the season and has scored a W.P.C.S. medal at his first attempt at the Midlands Association Spring Show. Congratulations to handler Adam Fletcher for the Sarum Stud. |
HORSE & HOUND Many of you have commented on the great pictures of Heniarth Anthem by Heniarth Quip, out hunting with the South Durham that appeared on the homepage and now can be seen in the "Gallery". Well in the April 23rd issue of Horse and Hound magazine Anthem can be seen on page 82 and again on page 85, amidst a team of big Hunters. Labelled in the article as a "Young Thruster" it goes on to say that; "Even the smallest children keep up - nine year old Molly Oman's tiny roan pony was jumping higher than it's own withers". Great going Molly and Anthem who are now also scoring in the show-jumping arena! |
FIRST FOALS ARRIVING With Eyarth Windflower due to foal on Lampeter Stallion Show day, she managed to wait a week before "waxing up". In she came with Sunwillow Georgina to keep her company and by 2.30 that night Georgina had decided to make good use of a dry bed of straw and had her foal without giving any hint! By 5.30 a.m. Windflower decided to join her and gave birth to hers! So we've started with a flourish. A dun born colt by Heniarth Yarra Glen out of Georgina and a chestnut born filly by Lemonshill Top Note out of Windflower. Photo's to follow shortly. The Turbo foals are making us a wait just a little bit longer!!!!!!!!!! |

LAMPETER WELSH BREEDS STALLION SHOW What fantastic weather for Lampeter Show - let's hope this is the sign of things to come after two years of "washout" shows? We had a good day winning the three year old Mountain Pony colt class with Colne Turbo (see youngstock page), and standing reserve colt champion to Tryfel Triumph, who is of course out of Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip! Third in the same class was Mynyddtarren Hugo by Heniarth Mr.Milligan. Great to see the offspring of our "boys" from visiting mares coming through the ranks and good to hear peoples positive comments on Turbo since last seen out as a yearling. In the Section B ring Heniarth Tittle-Tattle (pictured left by Rhoson Shem x Eyarth Windflower) had a good second in the three year old filly class on her first outing. Over in the ridden ring Brynodyn Sirius by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr scored a great win, qualifying for the National Pony Society Winter Lead Rein Championships. Not only were we spoilt by the good weather but also from receiving such great photographs from Ingrid Delaitre of Haras del'Aurore in France. |
![]() BRITISH SHOW PONY SOCIETY WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS Many congratulations to young Tristan Chandler and four year old Heniarth Cupcake (Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) who placed in each of their finals, making two special evening performances, never putting a foot wrong and winning many admirers - to coin a phrase, she was a "superstar". Can't wait for the summer shows. |
![]() SWEDISH STALLION INSPECTION Exciting news from Sweden that Molstaberg Cartier (photo above) has become the first colt by Heniarth Yarra Glen to be approved as a stallion. Owned and bred by Per Aschan and out of his Molstaberg Celline by Heniarth Quip!!!! Celline was imported "in utero" with dam Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina, herself the mother of the Cheshmere Studs Royal Welsh ridden winner, Heniarth Coron. |

NORTH EASTERN YOUNGSTOCK SHOW A recent trip North to judge gave us an opportunity of seeing Heniarth Cockatoo (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail , pictured left) who reminded us so much of his mother. He did a great show with Jack Potter to stand third in his Ponies UK qualifier. Meanwhile, younger sister Anya, aged three, who rides Cockatoo on the lead, was in training for any future judging appointments she may be offered! Well done Team Whisperdale. |

ROYAL INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW It was great to hear that the four year old Brynodyn Sirius (photo left) stood second in his very first Royal International Horse Show lead rein qualifier at the Hereford and the Marches Show, on only his third outing, finishing on equal points to the winner! Sirius is of course by the late Roseisle Pandy Tudyr out of that great show mare Brynodyn Scarlet so we look forward to following what promises to be a glittering career for the Landon family of the Linksbury Stud Not to be outdone, at the same show, the winning pony and qualifier at her first attempt this year was Rosmarche Heather by Heniarth Quip and out of Baledon Hy-Class for the Abrahalls of the Wyken Stud, fast becoming one of the most consistent ponies in the country. We have recently heard that Kathleen James' Higland Joli, again by Pandy Tudyr, has also now qualified down in Sussex. Congratulations to them all! |
| FRENCH CONNECTION We were pleased that Llangeitho Rose-Marie has found a new home in France with Maud Bobier and even more pleased with her reaction on seeing her for the first time on arrival; "My first impression when I saw Rose was: Wahooooo!!!! Her head is the most beautiful I have never seen! Fingers crossed for her having another lovely foal. Our Easter week-end see's the arrival of the lovely Section B mare Etincelle Ravignon from Ingrid Delaitre on her Welsh holiday to visit Heniarth Wood-wind so that'll be better than any chocolate for him! |
SPRING IS IN THE AIR All the lambs have arrived safely and seem to be doing well and each of the mares are looking uncomfortably well and ready to foal soon - so as you can imagine we're really looking forward to that. Even the chickens have started to lay! Colne Turbo has been off with Rowena Moyse at the South Wales Carriage Driving Centre learning to drive and is coming along nicely so may be we will drive him a little now before he runs with he mares again this summer. Hope to be out and about at Lampeter Stallion Show as a first outing, let's hope the sun shines? |

| JANUARY COMES TO A CLOSE WITH GREAT RESULTS The last weekend of January 2009 saw some great results for our ponies. Up in the North of England, Heniarth Cockatoo (above) was out for the first time as lead rein pony to gain a creditable second place with three year old Anja Potter aboard for the first time as part of the Danibeck Winter Series. Then elder brother Jack jumped on and won the Novice First Ridden. Despite biting cold winds it was reported that Cockatoo was a "real star". Meanwhile in the Midlands, Heniarth Cupcake (pictured right, Heniarth Quip x Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl) was making her show ring debut with Tristan Chandler at B.S.P.S. Area 6. In the absence of a Novice class the pair went in the Restricted/Open class and qualified in both divisions for the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships and then went on to take the Restricted First Ridden Championship. What a great first attempt? By all accounts, "she was a dream pony looking after Tristan and rising to his every challege". Sounds like these two ponies are going to have a fun summer. IN HAND RESULTS TOO........ Not being brave enough to battle the elements of a cold Winter show, Meirion and Richard attended the National Pony Society (Area 28, Dyfed & Powys) Annual Dinner and 2008 Points Awards Presentation. Heniarth Wood-Wind (Lemonshill Top Note x Eyarth Windflower) was awarded the Section B Championship and Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr. Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) the Section A title and both went on to stand Supreme Welsh Breed's Champion and Reserve respectively. |

OFF TO
A GREAT START Pictured left is four year old Heniarth Cockatoo (Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail) with young Jack Potter out at one of the very early Novice First Ridden competitions of 2009, hopefully the start of many successful outings this season. We are looking forward to the endeavours of several of our homebred novice ponies this year, or offspring from our stallions; so if you have news and pictures please do forward it on to us. NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER Heniarth Horatio (Heniarth Quip x Rosmarche Holly) has arrived safely at the Osory Stud in New South Wales, Australia., and appears none the worse for the long journey, and having to be body clipped in order to cope with the extreme temperature change! We look forward to watching his influence on the Australian pony scene. CONTACTS You may have noticed that we have been out of action on the website for most of the Christmas period due to a virus creeping in to the system and rendering a complete failure. Due to the expertise of Equestrian Websites we have been able to retrieve most of the information but our contact list was lost. ***HENIARTH CUPCAKE***
We have made the decision to part with this delightful three year old filly so that she will hopefully have a career under saddle and her good nature will bring happiness to any young rider.
Cupcake is by Heniarth Quip, himself a big winner under saddle including qualification for the Horse of the Year Show and Olympia as well as a winner in harness. He has sired Royal Welsh winners and has already produced a Horse of the Year Show Lead Rein and a First Ridden qualifier for 2008. Quip is of course brother to Heniarth Quinnell and Heniarth Quasar, both 2008 Horse of the Year Show qualifiers.
Cupcake is out of the Dutch owned mare Bwlch y Gwynt Caryl bred by the late. Shem Jones of Coed Coch fame. Caryl has been a winner in Holland and in Wales and has herself produced nine fillies in succession!
Cupcake has been very lightly, but very successfully shown and her unflappable temperament and charm lends itself to being a good, safe pony for a child and eventually the basis for a solid breeding program.

One quick look around the pens should have been
a harmless affair until we spied Lot 606, Cascob Strike-a-Light, full of
charm, a good bit of bone and a double cross of Cascob Nightlight whose
family we keep returning too - in fact this colt is a grandson of Silver
Ghost. So, he travelled home with us, ate up all his food, went out in
the paddock, was caught and seems to be a very pleasing character - so
time will tell how he turns out to fill our never ending search for a
potential new stallion. |

SOUTH WESTERN
REVISITED
When the South Western Association came on a stud visit three years ago, one lady fell for a handsome dun colt foal we had named Heniarth Jimmy Dapps, by Penual Jarryd out of Lacy Judie who we had purchased in a sorry state at the Revel dispersal sale day. It was great therefore to see Jimmy at Northleach Show this summer looking great and obviously much loved and working towards a lifelong career as a ride and drive pony. SOUTH WESTERN PONY OF THE YEAR CHAMPIONSHIPS Richard journeyed down to Bicton Arena on the Sunday of the Performance Show to judge these inaugural championships, selecting Cledwyn Red Rose as Supreme and Lemonshill Top Note Reserve Supreme. A very enjoyable day.

A RIGHT
PERFORMANCE!
India and Milligan and Angharad and Yippee enjoyed a wet two days at the Brecon WPCS Performance Show. They were first and second respectively in the Dressage and also in the open Ridden A class. Millligan went on to be Overall Ridden Champion of the Show and Reserve Overall Points Champion, whilst Yippee went on to be Mini Champion. Though as you can see by the smile on India's face it was a great clear on the Hunter Trial course, gaining a second placing, that was the most fun - not many stallions enjoy such a varied, exciting life, especially not Royal Welsh winning in-hand stallions - just goes to show the versatility and temperament of the Roseisle Pandy Tudyr stock, and of course the good jockey's!

PONTARDULAIS SHOW
Young Angharad Harries had a great day with Yippee-aye-Yeah at Pontardulais Show, winning the ridden Section A class and the First Ridden class, going on to be Reserve Champion in the Mountain and Moorland section against all the adults. The pair have also just achieved 7th place from thirty three entries at a local dressage show - the only child competing - now they're looking forward to the WPCS Performance Show. Heniarth Question (photo right) made his Welsh show-ring debut by winning a strong class at Pontardulais silver medal show for Rod Lewis - another great day for the stock by Pandy Tudyr. |

SCORES.......BIG TIME!
Congratulations to Heniarth Quill and Nicole Rosebury for winning the £500 Smoketree Ceaser championship and the Brineton First Ridden final at Ponies (UK) - what a great result, even getting their pictures in Horse & Hound! COMMISERATIONS Sadly, despite Quill having three seconds and Yankee Doodle having four seconds in Horse of the Year Show lead-rein and first ridden qualifiers they both missed out on qualifying - if ever qualification was well deserved with consistent performances it is with these too - however a huge vote of thanks for flying the Heniarth flag so high all season!

| PEMBROKESHIRE
COUNTY
It was a family day out at Pembs County with Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl who we have had on lease from Janneke Schilthuis for the last two years. Sadly Caryl was beaten into second place, right at the last minute in strong brood mare class, but her two year old daughter, Zonneweides Cinderella was third in her class for owner, Rod Lewis, and her foal, Heniarth Cupcake, won the foal class. Caryl will return to Holland in the autumn, safely scanned in foal to Heniarth Quip - it's been a pleasure to have her here and show her, and has introduced a new dam line for us here. Many thanks to Janneke and Egbert-Jan for entrusting her to us. |

THE SCOTTISH HORSE
SHOW
We decided to make the long trip North to the Scottish Horse Show so that Mr.Milligan the pony, could meet, Mr. John Milligan, his namesake, owner and breeder of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr - whilst there Milligan did a great clear in the HOYS working hunter class! and then he went Champion in-hand with the Sunwillow Quest daughter, Sunwillow Bellona in Reserve. Meanwhile, Yippeayeyeah, also by Pandy Tudyr, won her open class so is now joining Milligan at the Horse of the Year Show final. To cap a full day for John Milligan word came thru that two more "Andy" progeny, Roseisle Something Blue and Heniarth Davey Crockett were Mini Champion and reserve at the BSPS Welsh Championships at Builth Wells. |
India rode

THE NATIONAL PONY
SHOW
A busy time over the three days of the show, especially with Richard judging and then going off to Belgium on the Thursday morning, but a good show never the less; Milligan won his class of the Picton Final and was second in the Frethi Final as well as jumping a good clear in the Sealskinz Novice workers - only to remain unplaced - can't understand these worker classes??!! India did great with winning seven best junior rider rosettes throughout the show, especially by being 2nd, best Welsh and best Junior in the dressage from fifty plus entries riding her own Section C - Yarty Telynores. Bwlch-y-Gwynt Caryl won the Section A led mare class and her filly foal, Heniarth Cupcake, by Heniarth Quip, won her class and went on to be Reserve Supreme foal of all breeds, having also won her class at Cardigan Show the previous week |

THE NATIONAL WELSH

We had a great time at the Shrewsbury Show. Milligan won both the Novice and Open Working Hunter Pony classes and went on to win the £150 National Ridden Section A title with India. Poppy Duncalf took the mini championship with Sunwillow Georgina (left) which qualified her that day for the National award, which she too, promptly won and then young Angharad Harries partnered Heniarth Yippeeayeyeah (right) to take both the Novice Open and Novice Mini championships; there first time in the ring together. | OLYMPIA HERE WE
COME............
When Mr. Milligan stepped off the trailer on his return trip from Sweden we never imagined that he would have qualified for both the Horse of the Year Show and now the Olympia Ridden championships, all by the end of May. Not only is it a credit to India his rider, and Jane Harries, trainer, but also to Inger and Johann Becker in Sweden who have obviously done such a good job in raising him since he left these shores as a yearling. Not only did he qualify for Olympia at the National Pony Society Area 29 Show at Mount Ballan Farm but he did a lovely jumping round in the Novice WHP - so may be we will have to concentrate our efforts on that arena - but for the time being Milligan is more than concentrating on his "women folk"!! Milligan becomes the third homebred "Heniarth" pony to appear at Olympia in the last four consecutive years; Quail ('02) & Quip ('03 & '04) and this will be India's third ride in a row - a great achievement for the "team".

CITY & COUNTY

Always ready to dispel the myth that ridden animals can't be shown in-hand Milligan took a quick detour to Swansea Show and landed the breed led title and WPCS medal as well as standing Reserve Supreme Welsh & Mountain and Moorland. Not to be outdone, sister, Yeeha Sheila took the Reserve Supreme Yearling spot - the pair collecting over £100 in prize-money for their efforts! QUAIL ADDS TO THE FUN -agh! In between three shows in a weekend - Heniarth Quail foaled her first; a colt by Cascob Silver Ghost COTHI BRIDGE SHOW - saw the Heniarth produced Section B yearling filly, Rhoson Anna-Lena go Champion and take the WPCS medal - see www.rhosonponies.com

Having already had a great day at the National Pony Society Area X1 Show with Mr. Milligan we waited to see the Horse of the Year Show mini qualifiers. Both Sunwillow Georgina, (Heniarth Quip x Sunwillow Zell-am-Zee) who is still owned by Heniarth, though leased to the Turner/Duncalf family, and Heniarth Quill (Maestir Valiant x Sunwillow Quest) looked fabulous. Both went very nicely for judges, Alan Robertson and Russ Owen who pulled Quill in top and Georgina second. Both ponies did good individual shows so it was a nail biting wait for the other 25+ ponies to do their shows. When all said and done, the initial pull in was reversed and Georgina took the Horse of the Year Show ticket for young Poppy Duncalf. Quill's rider, Nicole Rosebury was gracious in defeat as the judge explained they had joint equal total marks but Georgina scored one higher on her ride mark, which therefore takes precedence. Needless to say we were exceptionally proud of them both, especially when Georgina went on to take the Mini Championship. The following day, Poppy and "George" gained their Royal International Horse Show qualification, so they will be joining Heniarth Yankee Doodle and Yolanda Rowsen who has qualified for the lead rein section. |
|
NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY AREA XI After a very early start to be at
Solihull for 8.30 am. Mr Milligan and India put up a fine performance to
win his first Olympia class and eventually go on to stand Reserve
Champion to Sydenham Forget me Knot with John James. He then went on to
qualify for the Picton/NPS Novice Championships and lifted the section
championship - a very productive day. |
THIRD IN A ROW
We were delighted with Eyarth Windflower when she presented us with a big, strong, filly foal by Rhoson Shem - her third filly out of three foals. FIRST TIME On the other hand, four year old Heniarth Quaint
delivered her first foal, a filly by Cascob Silver Ghost. FOAL PICTURES COMING SOON |
News and pictures from Holland tells us that Heniarth Quinell's first crop of foals are very exciting. Quinnell (pictured above) will be making his UK show ring debut soon as well as welcoming his first mares.
News Flash: ROWFANTINA OTTOMAN (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Rowfantina Old Fashioned) won a strong youngstock class at Royal Windsor Horse Show. |

FIRST FOAL OF THE
YEAR
Just to round off Lampeter Show day, Heniarth Quilt (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) delivered our first foal of the season when we arrived home; a handsome colt by Cascob Silver Ghost, his picture can be seen on the homepage. QUINNEL COMES HOME At one o' clock in the morning, on a wet Sunday night, we met Alan Pearce in Safeway's car park to welcome home Heniarth Quinnel from Holland. Quinnel ( Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Quest, pictured left.) has moved happily into Quips old stable as he's away at Rosmarche and I'm sure is looking forward to meeting some of the local ladies! Many thanks to Piet & Rhode Thielen for allowing us to have him home for the year. |
| WHO NEEDS SLEEP?
Still on a high from Lampeter we journeyed 8 miles up the road to the West Wales Spring Show, held at the United Counties Showground; though it still meant a crack of dawn start to be there for an 8 a.m........ on a Sunday! Heniarth Yum Yum ( Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Yasmin - pictured right) made her three year old show-ring debut and collected the Championship and W.P.C.S. medal, the Overall Welsh In-Hand Champion and then Reserve Supreme Welsh to the Ridden Supreme, Moelgarnedd Myrddin who is being produced for David Williams by the Marshalsay family. They deservedly had one over on Milligan who stood Reserve Welsh ridden champion to them, having also taken the B.S.P.S. Open Ridden championship and Section A ridden champion earlier that day - later taking second place in his Working Hunter class. Incidently Roseisle Pandy Tudyr sired four individual winners at this show in Milligan, Rosmarche Rowan (yearling colt), Heniarth Davey Crockett (lead rein) and Roseisle Something Blue (mini-champion).

MR.MILLIGAN GOES
ONE BETTER
Having spent the previous night in the casualty department until 11.30p.m. having my trodden on foot x-rayed, the noise of rain beating on the window at 5.30 a.m. did not encourage me to leap out of bed with much enthusiasm to be towed into and most definitely out of Lampeter Stallion Show, potentially damaging the paintwork of the new, beloved, lorry. However, the fact that we also had a trophy to return from last year forced us to get moving and it was a better start to the day when we managed to drive easily on to the showground. Both the "Rhoson" yearlings behaved well and gave good accounts of themselves. Unfortunately Tincer did not find favour but Anna-Lena won a good yearling filly class (see www.rhosonponies.com ), however Mr.Milligan came up trumps - spectacularly! Competing in the new ridden section, India once again rode him with great style to win his class with the Cheshmere Stud's Heniarth Coron in second. With stiff competition, judge Len Bigley called Milligan forward to take the Championship. As things were running a bit late the pair came straight out of the ridden ring to compete for the Supreme of Show, under 2005 Show President, Emma Williams. Low and behold - Mr.Milligan was pulled forward as Supreme of the Show, winning £100 and £75 of Alva Products, which were already helping him look his best! Needless to say we were over the moon. India's mother, Christine had promised not to cry this season but after West Midland and now this, she admitted, "it's only April and it's the second time I've been in tears." Why not? India must rate as the youngest recipient of the title and together, definitely the first ridden Supreme. Many thanks to all the individuals that made this possible - and even better we didn't have to be towed out!

| YARRA GLEN TAKES
SWEDEN BY STORM
Heniarth Yarra Glen had his first public outing at the Swedish Horse Board stallion grading where he passed his assessment with flying colours, scoring a 10 out of 10 for "breed type." Having only had three weeks notice to present him under saddle for inspection, leasee Inger Becker said "I couldn't watch, I just went outside and prayed!" Her prayers worked as he behaved well and gave a good account of himself. Then for the first time at this event a show of the stallions was staged in the afternoon against all sections and Yarra took the Supreme Championship - a well deserved reward for Inger, Johann and Tiina of the Ekbacken Stud who have put so much work into him. All this on the day that Yarra Glen left his first two foals for the Waxwing Stud.

INTERNATIONAL
TICKET
News has come through from the Rowfantina camp that Heniarth Yankee Doodle has won his ticket through to the Royal International Horse Show, led by Oliver Burchell-Small and ridden by Yolanda Rowsen who loves him to bits! UNION JACK MOVES ON After four great years at the Castlemead Stud, Sue and Mike Harries have made the decision to sell Heniarth Union Jack to some good friends to enjoy life as a ridden pony. Hopefully he will follow in his dad, Quip's, footsteps and we'll soon have pictures of him performing. AMERICAN WIN We're really pleased for Helen Bandy of Oregon, U.S.A. when her Heniarth Quip son, Rosmarche Harlequin won first time out at the Cotswold/Forest of Dean Spring Show, produced by Adam Fletcher and Callie Stein . We're sure there's more of those to come. |

WEST MIDLAND
STALLION SHOW 2005
Heniarth Mr. Milligan certainly gave us all a day to remember at the West Midland Stallion Show. The day started with being pulled top in the first Horse of the Year Show ridden A & B qualifier of the year. A nerve wracking moment as we waited for all twenty-four entries to do their shows and then we had to wait for his number to be called. He was called first! His first ever ridden show outdoors and certainly his first HOYS attempt. India rode him carefully and professionally and we were all thrilled. Then we switched bridles and took him into the In-hand ring where he also won and took the led championship under Laura Hutchins (Bengad Stud). A great day got even better. Then, back to the Ridden ring for the HOYS Championship under judges Kevin Walker (Brynoffa) and Ann Williams (Crawel) who quickly and efficiently looked at all the breeds they had forward and without hesitation called Milligan as Champion. Back to the in-hand rings to stand Reserve Overall Welsh Champion under Dr.Wynne and a very creditable second reserve in the Cuddy HOYS In-Hand qualifier. Then, with India back on board we entered the Supreme of the Show class with Debbie Machin officiating and some illustrious contenders around us, Milligan was pulled forward as Reserve Supreme to the young Riding Pony Kitty Kelley with Simon Charlesworth. A tremendous achievement for India and Milligan and appropriately his sash was in the colours of the Swedish flag!! |
HOMEBRED NEWS
Heniarth Yankee Doodle continues his winning ways by winning the lead rein division of the Ponies (UK) southern circuit at the Ardingly Spring Show recently, adorning himself with sashes and glory. Also, the Rowfantina yearling colt by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr out of Horse of the Year champion, Rowfantina Old Fashioned took the Keston Royal Occasion championship against all breeds and ages at the same show. The Burchell-Small team are obviously on a roll! The Section B filly and Windflower daughter Heniarth Whoopsadaisy remains unbeaten on her first few outings as a two year old with new owner Roma Wright-Smith. Sunwillow Georgina is giving her young riders, Poppy and Jess Duncalf some great fun as a first ridden. QUIPS HOLIDAY Heniarth Quip has left for his holidays with a lovely band of mares at Helen Myers Rosmarche Stud (www.Rosmarche.com) where he is sure to have a great time.

A GREAT EASTER
WEEKEND
Good news all round this Easter when Mr. Milligan completed his first Hunter Trial in great style and both Sunwillow Georgina and Heniarth Yankee Doodle did great things under the bright lights of the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships. Georgina stood reserve novice champion from her First Ridden section and Yankee took a second and a third in huge novice and restricted lead rein classes. Congratulations to all involved. |

BRITISH SHOW PONY
SOCIETY, (Wales) WINTER HERITAGE SHOW
A great day was had at this show for the offspring of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr. Heniarth Davey Crockett, pictured left with judge Mrs. Marion Thomas, (ex Baledon Miss Dior) won his lead rein class and took the Mini Championship on his first outing of the season for the John family, whilst Heniarth Mr.Milligan, pictured right, (ex. Sunwillow Mutters) took the Overall Novice Championship under Lady Evans-Bevan, with both ponies qualifying for the B.S.P.S. Winter Championships. Milligan also got to jump his first competitive Working Hunter course and did a great job, just knocking the gate, though still gaining a creditable fourth place and gaining a lot of confidence. We were also pleased that the "Heniarth" Novice W.H.P. championship went to Phillipa James with the Thomas's Ddeusant Diamond. All in all, a cold, yet profitable excursion! |

A WORK OF ART
You may well remember reading about the day
Elizabeth Henderson came to measure up Windflower for her sculpture,
(see archive page, at the bottom of this page) ; well we are delighted to
show you the finished article. Needless to say we are
thrilled with it. Adding to that Elizabeth very kindly modelled a statue of Sunwillow Quest, in her slightly younger days, (photo right) which has given us a lot of pleasure. Both statues are in cold cast resin which can be hand painted or bronzed and are a limited edition, available from Liz at Lizpurlogue@aol.com so you too could have your very own Quest and Windflower! |
YANKEE DOODLE RETURNS After nearly two years abscence from the show ring Heniarth Yankee Doodle made a triumphant return at the B.S.P.S. Area 14 Show to take both the Restricted and Open Mini Championships and Winter qualifiers. Yankee is by Pendock Buttonhole and out of Sunwillow Yasmin and was purchased by Merial Rowson as a four year old for her daughters. Yankee was once again shown by Oliver Burchell-Small. GEORGINA'S OFF ON HER TRAVELS Rather then spend the summer getting fat we are delighted that Sunwillow Georgina is off to join Poppy and Jess Duncalf for the season to do lead-rein and first ridden classes - if the girls can do half as well as brother Josh and Vean Hobajon then it will be a great summer. Let's hope they have fun! |

HENIARTH
YABADABADOO
News from Holland that the Royal Welsh winner Heniarth Yabadabadoo (Whatehall Louis x Sunwillow Yasmin) has been out three times for Harold & Yvette Zoet, winning three times, including the National Show and a Reserve Championship at the Dragon Pony Show. Great results. Yaba - is of course a sister to Yum Yum and Yarra Glen and the mother of Ann Sparlings Heniarth Wilma Too by Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin who is expecting her first foal by Mr. Milligan in 2006. |

![]() A laid back Mr.Milligan getting ready for his day! |
HORSE OF THE YEAR
SHOW
Once again we endured our usual disappointing
results at HOYS, although we were very proud to have qualified and
enjoyed positive comments from many admirers. |
|
QUIP IS BACK! A very fat and hairy Heniarth Quip has arrived home safely after a summer at the Rosmarche Stud. He obviously had a good time and many thanks to Helen for taking such great care of him - lets hope he leaves her some more great foals. It's unusual to see him in his winter coat as the last two years he's been clipped for Olympia at Christmas - I think her prefers it this way though - leave all the dressing up to Mr Milligan this time. |
GEORGE RETURNS TOO
Close on Quip's heels is his daughter Sunwillow Georgina who has come home from young Poppy Duncalf, ready to start her brood mare career. Poppy made a delightful thank you card, saying "I love George so much, I will really miss her," though I'm sure she'll soon be busy with Heniarth Quaint (Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Quest) who hopefully will bring Poppy as much fun and success next season.

NEWS FROM THE
NORTH
Good news from Simon Charlesworth to say that his Heniarth Bedlam, (Benni to all that know him), was first and reserve champion at the NPS Area 4 Foal Show last week, the first time out. Look out for him at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. MILLIGAN SCORES AGAIN Without even leaving his stable Mr Milligan has come out on top by becoming the best Section A and Champion stallion in the Welsh Pony and Cob Society Performance awards competition with India, winning five trophies! Yippee-aye-yeah also scored well, as did Angharad's other two rides so we'll have pictures after the presentation on December 4th. What a tremendous year Milligan has had considering he started the year as a novice. GELDING RESULTS PUBLISHED Please take the time to look at the winners of the National High Point Junior Gelding competition by clicking on the "gelding" button - a lot of effort and very well deserved success.

India, pictured left, with WPCS President, Lady Jennifer Evans-Bevan collecting his awards for Mountain Pony, Overall Stallion and Mountain & Moorland Champion at the recent presentations in Cheltenham. Congratulations to Sam Roberts who was Supreme, again, this time with Muskerry Blue Danube. HO HO HO!!!! Poor Georgina got sidelined to take part in the Kidwelly Christmas Festival, though I think she quite enjoyed her night out in town!

| MILLIGAN BOWS OUT
AT OLYMPIA
Well, Olympia has come and gone again and
Christmas is well and truly upon us - frightening to think that the West
Midland Stallion Show schedule arrived this morning, almost now getting
like the January Sales adverts already tempting us out of any money we
have left.
|
Getting "Polo" treats for concentration - that didn't work! |
Waiting in the wings like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth! |
Inger and Johann Becker - still very proud of Mr.Milligan. |

YARRA DOES SANTA
These pictures came a bit late for Christmas but
we wanted to show you how good Heniarth Yarra Glenn (Nerwyn Cadno x
Sunwillow Yasmin by Pendock Legend) looks in Sweden with his young
jockey, "Emmy". Apparently he loves his jumping and dressage
work with the big horses as well as playing in the deep snow they now
have (and the -12 temps they have!) |
![]() |
| YARRA'S FIRST
FOALS
Although some three weeks early and born into a snow covered land, the Ekbacken Stud of Inger Becker in Sweden reports to first two foals by Heniarth Yarra Glen. The first, a filly named Springflower out of E. Sunshine and then a colt named Jarrah out of E. Jasmine and it seems both are very pleasing. Yarra's getting sooo international, as we understand he already has a son in South Africa and of course his namesake, the Yarra river in Australia has played such a big part in the Commonwealth games ceremonies. |
QUIPS LATEST GUISE
It was fantastic news to see Quip was sixth in
the WPCS sire ratings. With the few mares he covers each year this was a
fantastic result and many thanks to all that showed his offspring. |
STOP PRESS
Quip had his first outing in harness at Aldershot Show on Newbury Showground and won his novice class. What a result! What was most important is that he didn't mind the other carriages and he behaved in his usual gentlemanly style |

EWE ARISTOCRAT
Been "all quiet" on the Western front lately, though we did make a flying trip to the Blue Faced Leicester In-lamb show and sale at Carlisle and of course brought two home, one for ourselves and one for Rod Lewis. What handsome and aristocratic sheep (?!!) and carrying three lambs between them. Highly recommended as a sheep breed especially around the ponies. We now have ten ewes with twenty three lambs scanned inside, ready to burst! LAST ROSETTES Just when we thought it had all finished, Mr Milligan was awarded the Reserve In Hand and the Supreme Ridden title at the National Pony Society Area 28 Points Awards last week, though his success was somewhat over shadowed by Meirion and Corin Knox's rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" as part of the presentation night entertainment - you had to be there!!!! |
| SLOW SHOWS
Having knocked ourselves out for the last few years, with both ridden and led ponies on the circuit, we had decided to cut back this season and take things a little easier, and cheaper, so that's why there seems to be less news around. We've only been to three shows so far, by the end of June, with our most significant result being Eyarth Windflower, taking the Welsh Section B Championship at Cheshire County Show and of course good old Quip has been flying the flag for us in harness. |

OLYMPIA CHAMPIONSHIPS
All the weeks of blankets and lessons, clipping and feeding, all seem worthwhile when you actually get through the doors of Olympia, ready to compete in the most prestigious of all the qualifying events. Quip seemed to remember where he was and was immediately at home with all the show-jumpers that trailed past his stable, which was just down the aisle from Nick Skelton's Arco, though sadly this did lead one rather glamorous French lady to ask India if she had enjoyed riding in the Shetland Grand National! OK, compared to Arco, Quip may be a bit on the short and hairy side but he can do walk to canter just as well!
The following day it was a relief that they split the judging into small and large breeds as last year thirty five animals nose to tail around the ring was a bit much - this meant we didn't perform until 11a.m. Despite the nerves having longer to develop, Quip and India tried their best and it was a great to come back in the afternoon and be called forward into 6th place overall, standing above some very notable animals and riders. We were all delighted and so proud of them both on their last showing performance together. We couldn't have done half as well either without the support of trainer, Jane Harries, who has endeavoured to smooth out the wrinkles over the last two seasons, as well as the support of Christine, India's mum.
Quip, obviously enjoying himself as Judges, Ann Pritchard and Len Bigley look on |
Quip has certainly done us proud. Reserve Supreme in both the Picton Novice and the Frethi Intermediate National finals last year as well as qualifying for the Horse of the Year Show at the Royal Welsh and being best of breed at Olympia. Then this year coming back to Olympia as well as being the £250 National Ridden Mountain Pony Champion at Shrewsbury - more than we had ever imagined when we started out. Next year he will be visiting Helen Myers Rosmarche Stud where he will run out with her mares that he has proved so successful with in the past. Then who knows - we had always planned to drive him - so he may be back!
Quip and India in the final line-up having just received their rosettes from the Countess of Shrewsbury The journey home was not quite as loud as last years, though this year we made a wrong turn leaving Olympia and ended up down a side street with a very irate lady in a BMW who would not reverse for us to pass, despite us having ten cars behind us and being about 1cm from the wing mirror of the car parked beside us. It was quite a confrontation. Though after 15 minutes when Christine, (India's mum) got on the phone to Scotland Yard, the woman relented and let us pass - nice people in London! Soon enough Meirion and Martin entered into the Christmas spirit!
Many thanks to the National Pony Society and to Baileys Horse Feeds for organising and sponsoring this event - it is a real treat and the final is every bit as good as the qualifying day itself. Lets hope we can make it back there again.

| NEVER WORK WITH
CHILDREN OR ANIMALS
So the saying goes! The Royal Welsh Winter Fair was going well until young Steehorst Kyro got into the Section B championship. His time came to trot up in front of judge, and at that moment he decided to "drop his landing gear" and refuse to trot. Despite attempts to put him back on four legs instead of five, we failed and patiently waited in line whilst the championship was awarded to John James' filly which we were pleased to see later going on to stand Supreme of the Show. Needles to say Kyro was not the most popular member of the stable on his way home, though he has now, as originally planned, made the trip to Stanley Grange Farm to be broken to ride. In hindsight it was still a great achievement for him to have travelled to Llanelwedd three times this year and win on each occasion; Glanusk, Royal Welsh and Winter Fair - may be we'll forgive him CONGRATULATIONS ; must go to Jill and Lottie Abrahall, taking the Section A championship with Flydon Wyn, who we can claim was conceived at Heniarth during Nerwyn Cadno's stay here back in 2001 - a great result for 25 year old Cadno.

ROYAL WINTER FAIR, TORONTO, CANADA It was a great pleasure to have been invited to judge at the Winter Fair, having not attended for some seventeen years, when in those days we would drive some fourteen hours from Massachusetts to compete with the Grazing Fields Farm Show Team. The led judging took place in the Horse Palace, over looked by its double levels of stabling. (top left) The overall Welsh Championship went to the Section C, Parvadean The Governor, shown by Jeffrey Kohler for Alan and Suzy Schockett.(middle left) The Welsh Champion of Champions that animals qualify for throughout the summer was won by the Section D mare, Menai Prides Choice for the Dagenais family, shown by Simon Bigley and Eurig Eynon. (bottom left). Section B Champion was Rotherwood Crown Prince for Kirsten Brunner who also won the Lady to drive class, (top right) and the Section A Champion was Relhok Austin Healey, (middle right), who also won the Adele Rockwell Memorial Trophy at his first time in-harness in the main Coliseum Arena. (bottom right) We were both treated royally and it was great to catch up with some old friends that we hadn't seen for a long time. Hopefully it won't be such a long time until our return to Canada.

Milligan travelled over with his son, Ekbackens Jackpot who is also to be shown in the UK. As you can see from the picture (above) Milligan soon settled in to enjoying the Welsh countryside! |
CHANGING COUNTRIES We are very proud to have Royal Welsh winner, Heniarth Mr.Milligan back in Wales, having been leased from his owners, Inger and Johan Becker of the Ekbacken Stud in Sweden. Even more exciting is that they now have Heniarth Yarra Glen in Sweden for two years to use in his place - so it's all change. Many of you will remember Milligan from the WPCS Journal add we did with him posing under the flowers of a hanging basket - well he's grown up since those days!
|
Yarra Glen (above) also seems to be looking forward to his new life and will hopefully follow in Milligans footsteps by leaving some lovely foals for Swedish breeders. |
|
SUPREME FIRST TIME OUT! News from Roma Wright-Smith to say that Heniarth Whoopsadaisy was Supreme Champion at the NCPA Northants, the first show she took her to after purchasing her at Fayre Oaks - lets hope that's just the start of a long and glittering career. QUESTION HEADING NORTH Heniarth Question (pictured right) has made the trip up to Waxwing in Scotland where we all hope he too will have a long and glittering career ahead of him |

SUNWILLOW UBERLINGER 1987 -
2004
(Sunwillow Matterhorn x Sunwillow Neiderhorn) Sadly we have to report the passing of Uberlinger, the dam of Heniarth Union Jack and Sunwillow Aphrodite, just two of her grand progeny. Her final resting place was with Jessica Middleton who cared for her right to the end - luckily retaining her daughter to carry on the line.

THAT WAS THE WEEK
THAT WAS -
Shem and India ready in the horse lines to go and contest the the Simpsons Refractories ridden final at the Horse of the Year. We were very proud of the performance they both gave, but sadly it didn't appeal to the judges that much - oh well, we know which pony we were pleased to take home at the end of the day

HORSE OF THE YEAR

ANOTHER HOYS SUCCESS
- STOP PRESS - Nicole &
Quill 6th HOYS final - well done!
Heniarth Quill, better known as "Henry" to his proud owners, the Rosebury family from Lancashire, has qualified for the Mountain and Moorland First Ridden finals at the Horse of the Year Show. Huge congratulations to his talented young rider, Nicole Rosebury who quickly followed up this success by the pair being selected as Supreme Native Ridden Champions at the British Elite Show. This makes the third of Sunwillow Quest's progeny to have been qualifiers at the Horse of the Year Show, a fitting way to celebrate her 21st year! |

We recently made a flying visit to Sweden to visit our our many good friends there and of course to see Heniarth Mr.Milligan and his first two crops of foals. We were not disappointed with what we saw and look forward to the day when Mr.Milligan can come back to Wales. We were re-aquainted with Per & Ta Aschan's Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina (dam of Heniarth Coron and Canoodle) and her daughter Molstabergs Celline by Quip who is in foal to Milligan for 2005 which should be exciting. Needless to say we were once again shown superb hospitality in a beautiful country and managed the whole trip without seeing any Elk roaming the forests and highways, which was a good thing as we'll have to go back again to see them!
Heniarth Mr. Milligan (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Mutters) Below right is Ekbackens Jackpot by Milligan out of Ecbackens Jasmine by Twyford My Man, bred by Inger Becker and owned by Anna Lena Jerbo and below left is Malby Milli Mint, again by Milligan and out of Malby Minta, bred and owned by Nette Morner Norstrum

NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS Rhoson Shem and India took the ridden Welsh championship at the NPS Show in fine style, a great reward for their combined effort. STOP PRESS: Shem and India qualified for the Simpson Refactories Horse of the Year Show ridden championships at Monmouth Show. We believe he is the only Section B pony to have the distinction of competing at HOYS, both ridden and in-hand in the same year.

NEWSFLASH - The Mountain and Moorland Lead Rein, Rosmarche Hollyberry, by Heniarth Quip, lifted the Supreme Mini Championship title at the National Pony Society Show for the Alder family. Congratulations to them all, as well as her breeder Helen Myers. WELSH & WELSH PART-BRED CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW A great show for Heniarth this year with Cascob Silver Ghost being called forward as Mountain Pony Champion and being the first recipient of the beautiful Weston Park Trophy, kindly donated by Dick & Janet Evans from Australia. The trophy will go to a different Section each year so we were thrilled to be the first names engraved on it. Heniarth Quip pulled it out of the hat to take the title of Ridden Mountain Pony of the Year and Rhoson Shem partnered India to be named as best Junior rider of the show, having been named as the highest placed A (Quip) and B (Shem) in the dressage, as well as best junior rider. Quip also sired the winning foal, Ty Golau Georgie Girl for Lisa Perrot on only her second outing. Well done! By all accounts the Shrewsbury show was a great event and the National titles were really hotly contested - it seems a far cry from Richards original idea that he had to plead WPCS council to support! Well done to the organising team that had the vision to bring the event to fruition with virtually no initial budget - lets hope it's a firm date in the calendar and will soon be identified as "the" breed show with all the appropriate qualifiers and recognition.
The Weston Park Trophy by Mary Pincent A NEW ARRIVAL AT HENIARTH
Here she is - the new girl on the block - Sapphire Melody, a fourteen year old Shetland mare of top quality Lockinge and Wells bloodlines - how or why she is here we're not too sure but I know she'd rather be here than Llanybydder market! No doubt she'll find herself going to a couple of shows when we can re-gain her figure, but in the meantime she's hanging out with Windflower, enjoying all the fuss. Looking back it was ten years ago that we won the Royal Welsh and NPS with the Shetland, Buckland Giorgio so it was about time we had another little critter around the place. TV FAME & GLORY
Just before the Royal Welsh a whole collection of animals congregated at Heniarth to be filmed for the title sequence of the television coverage of the show. These included Cascob Silver Ghost and Heniarth Quip along with soon to be RWAS Cob Champion Blaengwen Brenin as well as prize-winning sheep, cattle, a chicken and a World champion rabbit, each filmed against a green background which would allow their image to be overlaid with various effects. The sequence was filmed by Eclipse Creatives for Teledu Telisgop and was seen on S4C and S4C Digidol . |
Photo: Penelope Barlow NORTH OF ENGLAND IN-HAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Silver Ghost, (pictured above) took the Breed Championship and the Reserve Supreme Mountain & Moorland title at the North of England In-Hand Championships, having travelled up to Lancashire to contest the Whiteside & Knowles championship. Amongst stiff competition from all breeds in the final "Cascob" stood third, collecting £150 prize money! THE IRISH ALL-WELSH SHOW It was a pleasure to judge, along with Martin Jones, the Irish All Welsh Show at Thomastown, Co. Kerry. We were made to feel more than welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay with plenty of good food and great weather. The Supreme of the Show was Joanne Harper's Mountain Pony mare, Gwauniarll Honey with the Reserve going to Clive Johnston's Vervale Galileo. Honey was purchased via Hay on Wye sale and has been a big winner in Wales as well as Ponies(UK) when they travel over with her. Section B Champion was the yearling filly, Eyarth Chitza, a daughter of Eyarth Nata and the Cob winner was the Gwynfaes Culhwch daughter, Menai Cilmeri. Champion Part-Bred was Kilcreene Coral by Gigman Orinoco for the Smithwick family. Champion foal, interestingly enough, was by Rhoson Shiraz, exported in utero from Sally and Les Robinson, Hollyvale Stud. Richard WELSH SHOW, ORIVEDELLA, FINLAND
For the second year running, Waitwith Delight (pictured above, by Bengad Wild Indigo x Castlemead Delight) was Supreme Champion of the breed show in Orivedella, a show that I had great pleasure in adjudicating as well as giving a clinic on show production the following day. Delight was a charming little mare, what she lacked in stature, she more than made up for in quality and good movement. The mare was purchased by Ilona Pykalainen at Fayre Oaks Sale and stood above her homebred stable mate, Moondelight Idefix, by Verdrefawr Ifor who was also a grand type and again a good mover. Champion Section B was Rhoson Ciwt, a very correct young mare in a section that was quite variable in type and conformational faults. However, I was very impressed with the Cob Section for a country so new to the breed, my champion was the two year old filly, Moondelight Lucia, a daughter of Cathael Lisa by Tireinon Triple Crown. Once again, my stay was all too brief but very enjoyable, with particular thanks to Ilona Pykalainen, Leena Kahisari and Johanna Blom for their hospitality. Pictured below is Ilona with her pet pig who lives under the stairs in the house during the long Finnish winters - now that's love! Richard

A GREAT ROYAL WELSH
WEEK
Steehorst Kyro was Youngstock Champion and Reserve Male Champion Section B for John & Glenys Davies, Rhoson Stud, produced from Heniarth. Kyro was bred in Holland by Peter Steeghs, a double grandson of the great Eyarth Harlequin. Eyarth Windflower won for the fifth time in a row and ended the day Reserve Overall Section B Champion to Mintfield Songthrush with Edwin Prosser who eventually went on to win the Cuddy Horse of the Year qualifier, congratulations to Edwin and Diane. Rhoson Shem was third in the open Section B stallion class at five years old, as was Cascob Silver Ghost in the open Section A stallion class. Heniarth Quip won the "Velvet" challenge cup for the best ridden Section A from a huge entry in the HOYS ridden mountain and moorland section, once again emphasising what a pity it is that there is no specific championship for ridden A's and B's at the Royal Welsh any longer - too bad! None of this could have been possible without the great support of the team at home, though I don't think any of them wish to see the alarm going off at 3.30a.m for a long time yet!

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW - GEORGINA'S
ON HER WAY!!!
We're thrilled to report that Sunwillow Georgina has won her ticket through to the Horse of the Year Show as a Lead Rein, ridden by Alexandra Hollings and produced by Katy Carter for Team Hollings. They won a strong class at the Hickstead Derby Meeting on only the second qualifier they entered. The first of Quips offspring to qualify for HOYS. Congratulations to all, lets hope they enjoy the rest of the season together. DEVON COUNTY 2004 Rhoson Shem and Heniarth Quip journeyed down to Devon County Show to both win their ridden classes, Shem standing top of a class of 21 and behaving beautifully, ridden as usual by India. Both boys continue to cover mares as well as show - speaking volumes for their temperament. Both have now also qualified for the National Welsh & Part-Bred Championships ridden section.
NEWS FROM THE NORTH Reports from Waxwing are that Yarra Glen (photographed right) has settled in well and is enjoying his time with seven of the finest mares in Scotland - he certainly appears to be growing in to a grand animal, still only three years old. |
"CASCOB" WINS AGAIN
Cascob Silver Ghost is continuing his winning streak with five championships gained in six outings so far this season. He's won a WPCS bronze medal as well as a NPS Silver medal and has qualified for the Kilmannan Stud Championship at the NPS Summer Show. In taking the £100 Supreme Championship at the City of Swansea Show he also qualified for the £1000 Whiteside & Knowles Championship to be held in Lancashire; despite all this Heniarth Quaint has been scanned in foal to him, fingers crossed that he has settled the rest of his hareem.

GLANUSK WELSH STALLION SHOW
We had a successful time at Glanusk Show when Steehorst Kyro won the three year old colt class and Rhoson Shem won the stallion class, as he did at Lampeter, but this time went one further to take the breed championship under Stephen Howard, Boston Stud. Having been up most of the previous night waiting for Yasmin to foal, then the electric ramp on the lorry failing, necessitating the use of two trailers to get to the show we were more than pleased that the day ended on a high. Unfortunately we didn't get Shem into the ridden stallion class as it was a bit of a rush after the championship, with a rather wet pony - next year may be! WINDFLOWER GETS MEASURED UP We had an interesting day when Elizabeth Henderson came to photograph and measure Eyarth Windflower for the initial stages of a project to produce a limited edition of cold cast bronzes in her image. Elizabeth has already produced a charming sculpture of Dukes Hill Magnum, and hopes to have the Section B likeness ready in time for Fayre Oaks 2004. Windflower was quite happy to pose for the camera and have everything from the circumference of her muzzle to her waistline measured and recorded to be scaled down accordingly. We'll keep you posted as to the progress of the project |

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW SUCCESS AT
THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOW
We were shocked, thrilled and surprised when Rhoson Shem went right through the card at Royal Cornwall to take the prestigious Cuddy's Horse of the Year In Hand qualifier under Jennie Loriston-Clarke, from nineteen animals forward. She commented that he had just the movement that she looks for in her dressage animals. At only five years old, Shem has exceeded all expectations and remains a lovely character and a delight to work with. Cascob Silver Ghost also featured in the winning line up as Welsh Mountain Pony Champion, being pulled forward as second reserve, as well as earlier in the day winning a WPCS Silver medal on his first appearance on English soil! A day certainly to remember. |

When in Holland I was lucky enough to stay with Rhode and Piet Thielen who are the proud owners of Heniarth Quinnel, pictured below. Now two years old, Quinnel was very impressive and is sure to be another star out of Quest as well as inheriting all the best bits from Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin by Coed Coch Rhion. Rhode plans to use him on her own mares that are mainly of Nerwyn bloodlines and then may be show him at some point later in the season. I was very proud to have bred him and lets hope he will contribute to the further success of Mountain Ponies in Holland. Richard.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY At B.S.P.S. Cheshire Premier Show, Sunwillow Georgina gained her second championship in as many outings, however the Reserve Champion was named as Heniarth Quill. So congratulations to his rider Nicole Rosebury. Both Rosemarch Hollyberry, by Quip, as well as Georgina, have qualified for the Royal International Horse Show. HENIARTH CORON |
PONY MOVEMENTS Some of our own ponies have been on the move this Spring; Heniarth Yippayeyeah is with Julie Templeton and is going nicely under saddle, her brother Yarra Glen has gone on lease to the Waxwing Stud in Scotland for stud duties and Sunwillow Georgina has made her 2004 Lead rein season debut with Alexandra Hollings and Katy Carter, qualifying at her first attempt for the Royal International Horse Show. We'll keep you posted as to how the season g |

We have become increasingly proud of the success of Heniarth Coron and his rider, Terry Thomas of the Cheshmere Stud. Coron was one of two colt foals we were left by Pendock Buttonhole, out of Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina. Cellina was one of the group of ponies that came down from the Western Isles of Scotland when we purchased Coed Coch Rhion, leaving 2003 Royal Welsh Champion, Springbourne Elly behind on the island! Cellina was by Revel Cello and out of a Revel Pye mare and is also the dam of Gwyn Rhosyn Ceillidh by Rhion, Heniarth Canoodle by Rhion, ( a medal winner in-hand during 2003) and was then sold to Per Aschan's Molstaberg Stud in Sweden where she produced Molstaberg Celline by Heniarth Quip. No doubt Coron will go from strength to strength.

NEW
FOR 2004 Sometimes,
not often, a colt will take our eye and you make a mental
note of it for the future. This was the case when we were
the first people to use Dukes Hill Magnum, having seen him
in the spring of his yearling year – the result being
Quip. Another
such colt was Cascob Silver Ghost (below) who the Edwards
girls showed as a yearling and a two year old to win
Lampeter and Glanusk. He was then sold to the Harris family
of the Hope Stud, Llandeilo who have owned him for the last
ten years. So,
just as a matter of interest we paid them a visit in late
summer and were so impressed with Silver Ghost that we
managed to strike a deal to have him here at Heniarth in
2004 to show and cover our mares. He is
by Bettws Dafydd and out of the black mare, Cascob
Nightlight, who, with a dash of Gredington Llewellyn traces
back to Craven Golden Dawn by Madog, the same dam line as
the fashionable Pendock Buttonhole, whose grand-mother
Richard was given by Rosemary Philipson-Stow in the early
eighties.
Who
knows what the outcome of this venture will be, but it is
sure to be an interesting chapter of Heniarth history.

| FOXY'S WINTER SHOWS | |
|
Just to take our minds off our Olympia preparation we decided to take our Section C mare, Croniarth Cover Girl, "aka Foxy", to her first ridden show. She performed fantastically in the true star fashion that we know she is capable of, winning one class and coming third in the other, qualifying for the South West Pony Championships. With some concerted training during half-term holidays, Foxy and India ventured to their next show, winning again and taking the Reserve Welsh Ridden Championship. Foxy's now been sold and we wish her new owners the best of luck with her - we're sure she'll make a name for herself this year.

| GEORGINA DOESN'T LOOK BACK | |
|
Not many ponies go to the Royal Welsh Show grounds three times in the same season and come away with three first prizes. Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip did just this in 2002 by winning Glanusk, The Royal Welsh Show and The Royal Welsh Winter Fair, where she also was named Champion and Reserve Supreme of the show. However, that was just the beginning. Shortly after the Winter Fair she joined the Rowfantina Stud showing team in Sussex to commence a career as a Lead Rein Pony. This she took to like a true star and recorded some excellent wins and Championships, especially as a four year old to stand sixth place at the Royal International Horse Show amongst some very seasoned famous ponies. Our sincere thanks to Mandy Burchell-Small and Oliver for schooling her so well and for Daniel and Rosie Filmer (Longhalves Stud) for riding her with such style. |
Georgina is home for the winter but hopefully will be back out in the ring in 2004. |

The long awaited trip to Olympia got underway with threats of snow and blizzards. The living in the lorry had been decorated with ballons and luckily the only snow we saw was from a spray can on the lorry windows. We were determined to get into the Christmas spirit. With Meirion at the wheel we all arrived safely and managed to find a parking space to unload amongst all the traffic and coaches leaving the afternoon performance. How bizarre is that - why else would we ever entertain unloading a pony in the middle of the city?! We found our stable and began to mingle with the top show jumpers in the world and smile at the pantomime characters that were coming out of the ring. Luckily this year the stables were in the main building and weren't too hot. Last year poor Quail had to put up with a heating duct at full blast right above her - and she hadn't been clipped. We fed Quip, crossed town to park the lorry and then returned to the Hilton Hotel next door to the show venue - dragging our tack and kit box across the foyer floor like the real country bumpkins we were! All organised we decided to jump into taxi's and found ourselves in a smart Italian restaurant in Notting Hill, which gave us a good excuse to eat too much therefore ensuring a good sleep ready for the big day. Needless to say India was quite nervous on the morning but soon realized that Quip was planning on enjoying himself too. After a swift breakfast (well we'd paid for it, we weren't gonna miss it) we were able to exercise in the main arena from 7.30 to 8am which got the nerves under control - not that Quip seemed too bothered. All went smoothly and we were all very proud of their performance in the first section to be judged that day. Along with the seven of us that travelled up in the lorry, Quip and India had quite a few supporters in the crowd, including five people that we know of that have mares in foal to Quip for 2004, so it was great to do well for them too. Having started the year as Novice Champion at the West Midlands Stallion show to ending it as Best of Breed at Olympia is something we never even dreamt of, so needless to say the celebrations in the lorry on the way home were quite amusing - from singing along to an odd CD of classic Christmas songs to insisting that the man in the pay booth at the Severn Bridge crossing wore a pink "Barbie" tiara and sing along as well!!! The homeward trip deteriorated even further when Lilly began to change into her costume for the Carmarthen Hunt '70's party that we were dropping her off at on the way home. All good fun and a great end to our showing season.
