News From Heniarth

STEPPING OUT

On the right is the four year old Glynhaul Brocato by Heniarth Quip and out of Mynyddtarren Gabrielle, bred and shown by Angela Jones. Brocato was a good winner in gelding classes as a youngster but now has come out in style under saddle, ridden by Angharad Harries winning two out of his first three dressage tests and coming second in the other, against all sizes and ages. Fantastic results!

WEBSITE HITS THE WORLD OVER

We have been amazed by the results of the Hit Tracker that we placed on the front page of the website on November 4th with some 530 hits in a little over two weeks

It's great to see viewers from twenty one countries around the globe from Australia to Finland and most in-between, including the Middle Eastern Countries, Serbia and Thailand! What a cross section?

Let's hope that in 2009 we'll have some nice summer weather here so that all those that have checked out the website can come and visit and see the ponies in the flesh. Please not all at once though - the tea pot isn't that big!

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW 2008

Heniarth Quasar, ridden by Frances Pearson, led by David Marsden - 7th Lead Rein

A good day was had by the offspring of Sunwillow Quest at the Horse of the Year Show, both sons and grandchildren. Congratulations and many thanks to all the owners, producers, riders and trainers that enabled Heniarth bred ponies to reach this highest level of competition - we were all very proud here at home.

ON THE MOVE

We are pleased to report that Heniarth Quip has made his way to almost the other side of the UK to stand at the Cosford Stud of Margaret and Paul Brightwell in Suffolk for the 2009 season. The Cosford Stud is renowned for producing quality ponies that go on to perform under saddle so we hope Quip can contribute to their goals - we wish them all the best of luck!

MORE MOVIN........

Heniarth Yarra Glen has been sold. We made the decision to part with Yarra Glen to go to our good friend Rod Lewis's Cwm-Meudwy Stud in Llandysul where he is establishing a smart collection of mares for Yarra and furthermore he will still be available for us to use on the limited amount of Heniarth females that aren't directly related to him. Rod already has two mares scanned in foal to Yarra for 2009 so lets hope this will be the start of something great.

FAYRE OAKS 2008

Another year over and some good sales for Heniarth related stock despite a generally depressed market We were delighted that the Royal Welsh winner Heniarth Yabbadabadoo out of Sunwillow Yasmin made £3,600 to go to the Sunwillow Stud in Essex. The three year old filly Pant-y-Coed Celendine (pictured right) by Heniarth Quip made £2000 and is on her way to new breeder Mrs. Tina Douglass. Hengwys Cymro made £1600 as a made lead rein. Rosmarche Huckleberry, a full brother to our resident Rosmarche Holly made a fantastic £11,000 on the night of the Highflyer Auction to top the sale - another accolade for breeder Helen Myers.

We nearly made the sale without a purchase, however Richard fell for a lovely grey Section B mare, Llangeitho Rose Marie, plus colt foal at foot by Pennwood Alakai and in foal to him again - more of her on the Section B mares page. Wood-wind will be most impressed next season!

CARMARTHEN W.P.C.A. AUTUMN SHOW

Heniarth Yarra Glen has been out to two late shows of the season winning the championship at our local Llandyfaelog Show and then also the Championship, W.P.C.S Bronze Medal and Supreme of Show at the Carmarthen Association Show under Australian judges John While (Section) and Maureen Whyte (Supreme). Nice to end the season at a show with no rain and even a bit of sunshine!

WEST IS BEST

We were lucky enough to have a dry day when seventy two members of the Ceredigion Welsh Pony and Cob Association came to visit as part of their annual stud tour. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces on our yard and we were lucky enough to raise £150 through a raffle to support Shan Cothi's trek across Wales to raise money and awareness for research into pancreatic cancer www.justgiving.com/amserjustintime

MORE GOLD MEDAL SUCCESS

Double Heniarth victory at another Swedish show when Nette Norstrums yearling colt Malby Millie Yard took gold on his first show. Millie Yard is by Heniarth Yarra Glen and out of Malby Millie Mint by Heniarth Mr. Milligan

Eckbackens Sundance (photo above) also by Heniarth Yarra Glen took gold and the championship at her last show of the season for Inger and Johan Becker

NEXT IN LINE FOR SUCCESS

We have been following the success of Brynodyn Sebastian this summer but here is his younger brother Brynodyn Sirius by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and out of Brynodyn Scarlet. Owned by the Landon family of the Linksbury Stud, young Sirius was named Champion Gelding at the Pontardulais Show and must surely be an exciting prospect for the Novice Lead Reins in 2009

Still smiling in the mud and rain! Pictured above are two sisters by
Heniarth Quip. On the left, Rosmarche Holly Bough out of Rosmarche
Holly who was Youngstock Champion for Rod Lewis, Cwm-Meudwy.

and on the right, Sunwillow Georgina who took the breed championship and the W.P.C.S. Silver medal. The day also saw Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell stand second in a strong young filly class to Holly Bough and then Rosmarche Celyn by Heniarth Quip stand second in the barren mares to Three B's Ballerina who went on to take the Reserve slot to Georgina under Kathy Sheil (Dukes Hill Stud). Holly Bough must be deeply envious of her full brother Heniarth Horatio soon jetting off to the sun and warmth of Australia!

LAST STOP BEFORE HORSE OF THE YEAR

Following on from a great week at the BSPS Summer Championships for Heniarth Quasar and young jockey Frances Pearson, the pair went on to the National Pony Society Area 4 Show/North of England Pony Show, to take the Mountain and Moorland mini championship and then go through to stand Reserve Supreme Ridden of the Show

WE ALWAYS KNEW HE WAS GOOD

Just to enforce his high status amongst his many admirers Heniarth Mr. Milligan has taken a second Supreme Championship at an All Breeds Swedish show on his second outing of the season, thay also saw more gold medals awarded to fillies by Heniarth Yarra Glen. Go Sweden Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TWO FILLIES RETAINED FOR NOW.........

These are our only two filly foals for 2008. Heniarth Yours Truly (left) by Heniarth Quip and out of Sunwillow Yasmin and Heniarth Nellie Melba (above) by Heniarth Yarra Glen and out of Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

Great news that two year old fillyHeniarth Shooglenifty took the W.P.C.S. Bronze medal at the Balmoral Welsh Pony Show in Northern Ireland under Dutch judge Harold Zoet. Shooglenifty is by Heniarth Quinnell out of Heniarth Yippee-aye-Yeah and was purchased by Willeen Montgomery of the Ballyloughan Pony Stud as a yearling. Very well done and a great start to her showing career.

NO FAYRE OAKS ENTRIES THIS YEAR

For the first time since 1977 there will not be a consignment of Rhoson or Heniarth ponies at the Fayre Oaks sale in 2008. Sale enquiries are always welcome at home with some exceptional young ponies just waiting in the wings to move on at the right time.

DOING WELL AT THE SHOWS

Heniarth Bedroc (Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quilt) won his class at the Gwent Area WPCA Medal Show and took a second at Brecon County for Sue and Mike Harries of the Castlemead Stud; Rosmarche Holly Bough(Heniarth Quip x Rosmarche Holly) won her class at Nevern Medal Show and won and went Reserve Champion at Cardigan for Rod Lewis, Cwm-Meudwy Stud and Brynodyn Savannah (Heniarth Quinnell x Brynodyn Scarlett) took the Championship and the WPCS medal at Gower Show. Great results for them all. Da iawn!

MORE YOUNG JUDGES

Congraulations to the National Pony Society Area 29 Young Judges team that were victorious at the Summer Championships. With prior instruction on Riding Ponies and Hunter ponies from their area chairman, Martin Jones, they travelled down to Heniarth one wet afternoon to discuss natives and breed type and it obviously all sunk in with great effect!!
Too bad the judge in the NPS "Fit for the Future" appeared not to have read her breed descriptions as well as the Young judges had when assessing a Mountain Pony - "Neck -Lengthy, well-carried and moderately lean in the case of mares, but inclined to be cresty in the case of mature stallions."
Well done Area 29 - keep up the good work and your sense of humour!!!!

FROM OLD SOUTH WALES....
           TO NEW SOUTH WALES

We're very proud to announce that Heniarth Horatio (Heniarth Quip x Rosmarche Holly) has been purchased by James Parlevliet and Darrell Bishop of the Osory Stud, New South Wales, Australia, and is due to fly out in November. James and Darrell have some eighty females in their stud so young Horatio will be kept busy with some quality wives.
During our last visit to Australia some seven year's ago we made the long journey up to their town of Mudgee to see the famous mare Osory Philadelphia that we had heard so much of and Horatio combines a link with her parentage via Coed Coch Norman on Quips side and Baledon Diamond (Revel Janus x Baledon Dinah), full sister to Baledon Dilys, the grand-mother of Holly.
Full credit has to go to Helen Myers (Rosmarche) who instigated the Quip/Holly cross that has come up with some lovely animals.

NATIONAL PONY SHOW

Following on in the same vein we hear that Rosmarche Huckleberry, full brother to Rosmarche Holly, took the Overall Ridden Mountain & Moorland Championship at the National Pony Society Summer Championships.
Also, Brynodyn Sebastian (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Brynodyn Scarlett) qualified for the Horse of the Year Show Lead Rein finals on the first day of the show. Fantastic results against the best ponies in the UK.

HENIARTH STOCK COMES OUT ON TOP IN SWEDEN

Judges Gunn Johansson(SWE) and Ifor Lloyd(UK) selected Heniarth Mr Milligan (left) as Supreme at the latest Swedish Federation Show with Malby Mint Yulep by Heniarth Yarra Glen as Reserve Supreme, another three fillies by Yarra Glen were awarded the acclaimed gold medals.

These photos and more from the show and from the 2008 Royal Welsh can be seen courtesy of Marie Nilsson by clicking on the link to the right.

NATIONAL SHOW, SHREWSBURY

We had some good placings in the led classes at the National Welsh and Welsh Part-Bred Show at Shrewsbury gaining some valuable sire rating points, however it was Heniarth Quinnell that gave the stud the best result by taking the Reserve Supreme title in the Brynseion Ridden National Final, partnered as usual by India Latter. Highland Joli, by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr took the mornings Mini Championship for Kathleen James.

YOUNG JUDGES

Our Australian guest, Ashley Porter was talked into entering the Young Judges competition at the National Show. Having studied the UK rules and recommendations and acted as probationer under Richard at the Midland WPCA Silver medal show the previous week-end he duly entered the 18-25 year old section - and won! Needless to say all the Australian contingent of enthusiasts still over from the Royal Welsh were very proud and we gather Shrewsbury was "rocking" that night!

Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin by Pendock Legend)

ROYAL WELSH SHOW 2008

Thank heavens it didn't rain at this years Royal Welsh! We had some great results. Our Sunwillow Georgina by Heniarth Quip was third in her first senior brood mare class from forty five entries and her filly foal Heniarth Nellie Melba by Heniarth Yarra Glen was 8th from a class of seventeen so we were very pleased with that. Heniarth Yeats by Heniarth Mr Milligan very nearly caused a spectacle when the leather coupling under his chin snapped as we trotted in to the ring ! Luckily he didn't realise he was loose and continued trotting around the ring until he could be secured and went on to stand a creditable second place from fifty four entries. Tryfel Triumph out of Tryfel Dion by Quip was fourth in the same class. Rosmarche Holly Bough by Quip stood seventh in the two year old filly class with Brynodyn Savannah by Heniarth Quinnell coming fourth. On Thursday Quinnell was best ridden Mountain Pony winning the Velvet Challenge Trophy previously won by Heniarth Coron, Heniarth Mr Milligan and Heniarth Quip! In the ridden Horse of the Year Show ridden A & B class Rosmarche Holly Sprig  by Quip was fifth winning the Silver spoon for the highest placed gelding and Roseisle Samantha, a grand-daughter of Roseisle Pandy Tudyr stood sixth in the same class.

Heniarth Davey Crockett by Pandy Tudyr was 5th in the Lead Rein ridden by 3year old Jade John and Glynhaul Brocato by Quip was 12th in the First Ridden. Forty five and twenty five entries respectively.
We have to say a huge well done to our good friends that did so well in the led classes; Barry "we taught him all he knows" Shepherd standing Overall Champion Welsh Mountain Pony with his homebred Vervale Gabbana; Lottie and Jill Abrahall, Reserve Female Mountain Pony Champion with Flydon Arian Byw, (conceived at Heniarth!) and John, Maggie and Anthony Carter for having a such a great two days with Millcroft Isca Roc (by Millcroft Ghost once proudly covering mares at Rhoson) and Millcroft Dahlia not only being Champion B but also taking the Tom & Sprightly Award - we can't remember the last time a Section B ever won that!
Sadly no Welsh A or B's qualified for the Horse of the Year Show under saddle as the first three had already qualified but in the Section C's Shirley & Terry Jones bred the qualifier Maenan Ronan Keating. As Shirley's son said; "Boyzone pack up and he has to lower himself to being one end of a horse......'

A lot of effort for all concerned but as ever a great "shop window" for our breed.

MORE QUIP KIDS COMING THRU................

Heniarth Union Jack (photo left) by Heniarth Quip is giving a lot of fun to the Payne family and has now qualified for the Ponies (UK) Confined Novice Lead Rein with Ella as well as performing well in Picton Novice and First Ridden classes with Clara. "The girls are fighting over him now he's going well off the lead as well, which gives an insight into how much we value him," says mom Alex.

NEW NOVICE

Young Glynhaul Brocato, also by Heniarth Quip won the Picton Novice qualifer at N.P.S. Area 28 at his first show ridden by Angharad Harries. Brocato is a son of the champion palomino Mynyddtarren Gabrielle and was bred by Angela Jones who showed him with great success in the National High Point Gelding Awards. At the same show he also won the ridden Welsh Section A and was second in the Open. A great first time out!

Well done to both! We hear that both Claire Smalley (Barkway Stud) and Cynthia Trodd (Romany River Stud) have young Quip offspring waiting in the wings to come out under saddle - can't wait!!!!

OFF TO GREAT START

Brynodyn Sebastian (left) by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr has made a great start to his lead rein career (as reported below) having only been broken in April. Sebastian is of course out of the charming Brynodyn Scarlett who we took to the Horse of the Year Show twice and went Supreme Mountain Pony at the W.P.C.S. Centenary Show in 2002 for owner/breeders Keith and Ann Hughes

FOR SALE

We have decided to sell the angelic "Cupcake", (photo right)  Together with her good nature and the success that Quip's progeny are having under saddle it seems too good an opportunity for her not to go out under saddle
More pictures on the Sales page

OUT ON TOP

Heniarth Wood-Wind completed his first show season winning at the Royal of England (for the second time)  and becoming Reserve Male Champion bringing his tally to five wins from five outings, with a bronze and a silver medal including three Supreme titles  and plenty of admirers along the way. He'll be out in the field now and we eagerly await the arrival of his 2009 full sibling from Lemonshill Top Note and Eyarth Windflower.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE BOYS

A fantastic result for the Abrahall family of the Wyken Stud when their Rosmarche Heather by Heniarth Quip took the Horse of the Year Show Lead Rein qualifier at the Staffordshire Country Festival. Heather is of course out of the same dam as Rosmarche Holly whose 2008 colt, Heniarth Horatio, also by Quip,  is growing into a mighty fine colt. Roseisle Samantha took the First Ridden ticket, a grand-daughter of Pandy Tudyr.

AND MORE........

Congratulations to Kathleen James of the Highland Stud and her connections for winning the Horse of the Year Show Lead Rein qualifier at the NPS Area 25 Show with her homebred Highland Joli by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr. We understand Brynodyn Sebastian also by Pandy Tudyr out of Brynodyn Scarlett was second, on only his second HOYS qualifier - the last time he was third- let's hope he's climbing the ladder to qualification.

A NEW QUIP KID DOES GOOD!

It was a great surprise to arrive at the Ceredigion W.P.C.A. Show to see Pat Owens Syfynwy Waterfall (left) by Heniarth Quip competing in the Lead Rein, the First Ridden and the Open Novice classes at only four years of age with Rhiannon Mason, a very talented young seven year old rider aboard, produced by Wyn Morris MFH. Rosettes were gained in all the classes to accompany the trophies she has already won this season. I'm sure we'll hear more of this combination!

Meanwhile Heniarth Quinnell (right) continues to do well (when his rider is not lying on a beach in Spain!) with Championships in the Welsh Ridden and the Mountain & Moorland Ridden at St. Clears Show as well as India showing her Section B stallion, Blaenpentre Silver Coin to take the in-hand championship over Richard with Rhoson Ela.

This was great for us here at Heniarth, as now, when we "are old and full of sleep", (which could be next week), we can get India to show our ponies in hand for us as well as under saddle! Needless to say Richard did not complete the entire lap of honour as India sprinted off into the distance!

TURBO'S HAPPY GANG

It's nice that people have asked how Colne Turbo (left and centre above) is getting on. Well we can report he is happy with his small herd of mares overlooking Carmarthen Bay and across to the Preseli Mountains with his first covered mare, Royal Welsh  Champion Heniarth Yum Yum scanned in foal.

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR THE QUEST FAMILY

photo:Tivendale. Courtesy of www.waxwingponies.com

Another busy weekend for Sunwillow Quest kids and grand-kids. Waxwing Equerry (Heniarth Quip x Argaty Herrods Daughter) picture left qualified for the Horse of the Year Show First Ridden finals at the Royal Highland Show. As his dam's name suggests she was one of the handful of stock left by Waxwing Herrod before he left for Australia, the same crop that left Roseisle Pandy Tudyr so Equerry is basically the same cross as several of our 2008 foals who have the added bonus of a Quest dam line!
We reported below about Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip ; seems that she travelled down to the South Western W.P.C.A. Show at Bicton Arena and won the Section A Championship and the Supreme of the Show - another great success and sire ratings points for Quip?
And then back up North for more good times with Heniarth Quasar (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) who took the Supreme Mini Championship at the Northern Horse Show. To quote his owner, Cath Pickering; "What a little star he is. Went to the Northern Horse yesterday to see if we could qualify for the Micro- Demolition. There was an atrocious gale blowing which was so bad that big branches kept snapping off trees and blowing into the ring. Q came out to do his show having being pulled in top and was going like a little trooper when a sizable bit of shrubbery blew right under his hooves. He cleared it with a little bunny hop and then resumed a clockwork like rhythm to complete his show. Steven Howard who was judging seemed to really like him and he went champion with the 2nd placed lead rein reserve."
Meanwhile in the next ring Rhoson Shem was doing great things - go to www.rhosonponies.com
BLAENAVON PONY IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY
40TH SILVER MEDAL SHOW

We ventured into the Brecon Beacons where Heniarth Yeats scored another victory under judge Sheila Johnsey (Wilcrick Stud)

Though it was great to see the Cobley Family's Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip take the Championship, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society Silver Medal and the Reserve Supreme of the Show title. Picture below

A great surprise was to spy a very nice looking lead rein pony on his second only outing. (see right) It turned out to be Bengad Leonotis (Bengad Walnut x Bengad Lavender) who we had purchased as a foal from the Bengad Stud

He was sold as a two year old colt to Peggy & Sian Coulthard (Lanfrechfa Stud) who placed him in his present home. Needless to say he won too!

THREE COUNTIES SHOW

A good day out for the family when Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) won the yearling colt class and Brynodyn Savannah (Heniarth Quinnell x Brynodyn Scarlett) won the 2/3 year old filly class and went on to stand Reserve Champion under Ann Daunt (Maestir Stud)

Also doing well under saddle was Rosmarche Holly Sprig (Heniarth Quip x Rosmarche Holly) full brother to this years Horatio (see below)

In the Section B ring Heniarth Wood-wind out of Eyarth Windflower secured a win in the Yearling colt class under Mrs Butterworth, Paddock Stud

COTHI BRIDGE AGRICULTURAL SHOW

Rosmarche Holly Bough by Heniarth Quip ex Rosmarche Holly by Penual Mark.
See www.Cwm-meudwy.com

The first of the one day agricultural shows in South West Wales got underway recently and saw a win for Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr.Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin). However the day was stolen by Rod Lewis' two year old filly, Rosmarche Holly Bough by Heniarth Quip and out of our now resident Rosmarche Holly who went Youngstock Champion and Reserve Overall Mountain Pony to the stallion Dukes Hill Darcy, therefore winning herself a WPCS Bronze Medal and qualification to the National Rhydspence Championships at her first show of the season, under Judith Reed (Haverford). Lets hope Holly's 2008 full brother will continue in the same vein - he certainly looks as if he might. (see below)

LAST FOAL OF THE YEAR

As Sally Potter was leaving a message on the answering machine to tell of Heniarth Cockatoo's great success at the Northern All Welsh Silver Medal Show (see homepage) we were down in the stable delivering his brother, the last foal of the season. Spooky.

Heniarth Kookaburra
 (Heniarth Quip x Heniarth Quail)

Quasar's double whammy weekend ..............

Attending his last attempt at Royal International Horse Show qualification at BSPS Area 1b in Cumbria young Heniarth Quasar and Frances Pearson were delighted to get their ticket to Hickstead. Little did they realise what was to come.
The following day they travelled to Midland Counties in their first attempt at Horse of the Year Show qualification and they won!!! A big class of 30 plus ponies attended only the second qualifier of the year that saw Quasar come out on top, go Mini Native Champion and then eventually Supreme Native Champion. A great day and great excitement for mom, Cath Pickering and of course leader David Marsden. This is the trio's second appearance at HOYS.
Quasar is of course by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr and out of Sunwillow Quest, making him a full brother to our own Quilt. A fantastic result.

FAMILY AFFAIRS
News of the family offspring is cropping up with Waxwing Milk Tray by Heniarth Yarra Glen, a three year old filly owned by Henry Hird winning at Royal Windsor for the second year running; Brynodyn Savannah, a two year old filly by Heniarth Quinnell winning at Devon County; Waxwing Equerry by Heniarth Quip scoring some great ridden results in Scotland and Tryfel Triumph out of Tryfel Dion by Heniarth Quip winning a good class at City and County of Swansea Show for the Cobley Family. Well done to all.
!!!! Nellie qualifies for Horse of the Year Show at his first attempt !!!!

Quinnel as three year old with his mother Sunwillow Quest (Coed Coch Salsbri x Sunwillow Bernina) in her final year. "Where quality is a Quest"

Two spectacular events happened on this May Bank Holiday weekend. NASA managed to land a space probe to find life on Mars but even more momentously than that Heniarth Quinnel qualified for the Horse of the Year Show under saddle, making that the fifth of Quests offspring to qualify!
This was Quinnels first attempt at qualifying and is a great result for India and mom, Christine and boy friend Dan who was responsible for Nellies shampoo (he'll soon learn not to volunteer again!?)  as well as proud owners Piet and Rhode Thielen whose mobile phone line had never been as hot before between the City of Swansea Show and Tunisia where they were on holiday!
To get through early in the season at only the third qualifying show of the season and on home ground made the occasion more special, especially as the second qualifier fell to Meirion's parents Rhoson Shem. Looks like another day out in Birmingham in the Autumn. Really well done to all concerned from two very proud breeders.

photo: anthony-reynolds.net
NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY AREA 29

A great start for Heniarth Bedroc (Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quilt) making his first yearling show ring appearance with a win under Gareth Price (Littlewern Stud) for Sue and Mike Harries (Castlemead Stud) - lets hope that's the first of many.
Meirion showed his parents three year old filly, Rhoson Hei-di-Ho to take the Championship and W.P.C.S. Medal under Clive Morse (Millwood/Penwood Stud) whilst Richard was happy to award the Olympia qualification ticket to Aimee Hoare and Pentrepiod The Judge - and believe it or not we didn't get too wet......

FIRST RIDDEN WINS

Fantastic to see Heniarth Doris Day's name back in the Horse and Hound results with the Beaumont Family with a good second at Leicester County and then a win and a Reserve Champioinship in the whole Mountain and Moorland section at Newark and Notts. Doris is of course a full sister to the HOYS qualifier Heniarth Davey Crockett (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Baledon Miss Dior by Weston Wyseworth)

CARMARTHENSHIRE WELSH PONY & COB ASSOCIATION SHOW

Yeats at the head of the line

Things are getting even better - two shows on the trot that it hasn't been raining and even better still that this one was only eight miles from home!! Great for the carbon hoofprint!
The day got off to a tremendous start when Heniarth Yeats (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Sunwillow Yasmin) was pulled top in a class of thirteen yearling colts. Even nicer were that the top three were each grandchildren of the late, great Sunwillow Mutters (Revel Playsome x Sunwillow Fusshorn by Coed Coch Norman)

The day carried on with good entries under Mr Chris Gibbons, (Rhydspence Stud) with Yeats taking the youngstock championship over the two year old filly, Ceulan Cara. This was a second win here for Yeats' new owner, Rhode Thielen from Holland who won the youngstock championship here in 2005 with Heniarth Quinnell who in fact was back here this year winning in the next ring under saddle. Isn't that what it should all be about? Yeats went on to stand Reserve Champion to the six year old stallion, Dukes Hill Darcy, himself a grandson of Mutters being by Mr.Milligan's brother, Dukes Hill Magnum, also the sire of Heniarth Quip.

If that wasn't enough Wood-wind came out in great style to win his class, take the youngstock championship and the overall Section B championship and W.P.C.S. bronze medal at his first attempt, with the Dutch owned and bred Lintelo Cat Joelle as reserve. To have a silver and a bronze medal on a yearling by the middle of May is no mean feat and makes us so very proud of his "lordship" and indeed his mother Windflower. Not stopping at that Wood-wind was named Supreme Yearling of the Show and Supreme Youngstock of the Show under Mr. Dewi Thomas (Techon Stud). A fabulous day for the young "guns" in their own "back yard".

FAREWELL QUAINT

O

May 2001 - May 2008

We sadly had to make the tough decision to put Heniarth Quaint to sleep recently though our fond memories will live on through the exploits of her three offspring, Tweedledee, Tutti Frutti and Timpani. We only wish we could have had many more years enjoying her company.

LIFE GOES ON..........

ANOTHER GREAT DAY

Margie Edwards with Nefydd Antur (right) and Heniarth Wood-Wind with Richard (left) Champion and Reserve Section B's at Glanusk 2008

We always enjoy going to Glanusk and this being the 50th anniversary of the show it was that bit more special, so with trepidation we ventured once more into the foray of competition with young Wood-wind, hot from his Lampeter success and we were not to be disappointed. He delighted us all by not only winning his class, but becoming best yearling, best colt and Youngstock Champion under Gillian Sells (Priestwood Stud)

Eyarth bred ponies were well to the fore with the progeny of twelve individual mares and eleven different stallions entered.

Our warmest congratulations to Margie  - Nefydd who was also second with a son of Antur's, Nefydd Emlyn in the two year old colt class.

The day ended with the show President, Betty French (Forlan Stud) awarding him the Supreme Yearling trophy of all Sections... sending us  all home very happy and very tired from a show where for once the sun shone and it didn't rain!!!!

Two more lovely foals born on May 2nd both colts by Quip and out of Andy mares - I can sense a lead rein coming on???

NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY SPRING FESTIVAL

Great to hear that Rosmarche Holly Sprig  by Heniarth Quip won the A & B Ridden Novice Winter Final. Rosmarche Heather, also by Quip won the Novice Lead Rein Winter Final and Highland Joli by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr was second in the Open Lead Rein Winter Final as well as second in the Micor Demolition qualifier with our own bred Heniarth Davey Crockett by Andy taking third in the same class. Well done kids - both two and four legged!

WELL CHUFFED!

photos by Christine Latter & Meirion

What a great day we had at a very cold Lampeter Stallion Show when our homebred colt, Heniarth Wood-Wind (Lemonshill Top Note x Eyarth Windflower) went all the way to become Section B Champion under Dewi Evans, Hilin Stud. In doing so he became the first yearling colt to be Overall Champion since Rotherwood Cassino Royale, some twenty years ago.

Only having been shown once before when he won at the Royal of England, Wood-Winds success justified a long held plan when Richard gave his sire his first Championship at a foal show in Devon, re-enforced by both Windflower and Top Note standing alongside each other as Female and Male Champion at the Royal Welsh in 2003. Needless to say we were all very pleased - lets hope this early success carries him on to a shining career as a sire and a performance pony?!

Battling the elements whilst celebrating her 18th birthday India partnered Heniarth Quinnell to two wins in the Open Ridden A and the NPS A&B Templeton/O'Neil qualifier but missed out on the tri-colour but we were happy to see his daughter, Brynodyn Savannah take third in the two year old filly class. A very satisfying day indeed.
FIRST FOAL OF 2008.....

As we made an early start to set off for Lampeter, Georgina (Heniarth Quip x Sunwillow Zell-am-Zee) presented us with a filly foal by Heniarth Yarra Glen - already rejoicing under the name of Heniarth Nellie Melba, the famous Australian diva!

GELDINGS GOING GREAT GUNS

Heniarth Union Jack (above) by Heniarth Quip x Sunwillow Uberlinger was top priced colt foal at Fayre Oaks and enjoyed some great success with the Castlemead Stud before now emerging as a much loved lead rein pony for the Payne family and three year old Ella. So far this season the pair had a very credible third at the Ponies UK West Midland Stallion Show in the novice section and looks set to have lots more fun this summer.

Meanwhile in Yorkshire young Heniarth Cockatoo (below) by Cascob Silver Ghost x Heniarth Quail is coming along nicely for the Whisperdale Stud as a future mount for the grand-children. He's already been out and about as a three year old gelding and is slowly gaining points for the National Gelding Awards. A truly lovely childs companion.

Travelling to the shows with Cockatoo is Heniarth Timpani, (above) by Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quaint, still a colt but again destined for the grandchildren just re-enforces what we keep saying; "you have to buy them young and bring them on because when your'e all clambering for that lead rein pony they just can't be found for love nor money!"

UNEX TOWERLANDS

Judging the young Mountain ponies at Towerlands
more pictures on
www.flashharryphotography.com

We were recently invited to judge at the Welsh Medal Show at the Towerlands complex in Essex. Never did we think we would wake up to snow but

that didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the keen exhibitors and spectators that turned out.
To start the day Richard judged the Young Handlers and awarded the championship to young Liam, who at the age of only five marched into the ring with his Mountain Pony Croniarth Sweet Sensation and did a fantastic job - definitely a star handler of the future!
Some really good entries in the Section A's saw the first two yearling fillies take the Champion and Reserve Youngstock awards in the shape of Colne Tinkerbelle and Idyllic Perdita respectively. Two lovely, correct fillies
with Tinkerbelle continuing on to take the Overall Champioship with Idyllic Entreprenaur as Reserve.
Meirion had the gorgeous yearling filly as his Champion in the Section B's in the shape of Marons Pearly Necklace bred and shown by a delighted Mr Rodd, competing in his eighty second year!

The Heniarth Owner -bred trophy produced by Gwili Pottery

Together with fellow judges, Joe Giles (Leyeswick) and Peter Gray (Thorneyside), the A and the B fillies took the overall Yearling and Owner bred awards with Colne Tinkerbelle eventually standing Supreme of the Show, a great credit to her breeder Ann OvertonAblitt. Reserve Supreme was Ceri Fells' Section C mare Laurtom Gwenllian, bred just down the road here in West Wales by Janine Hadley.

Very small, very left picture are the pair from 2006
MEDIA CAREER

Now that Naomi Campbell's career is allegedly in turmoil after her being removed from a BA flight, Meirion and Shem thought it was a good time to start their "cover model" launch by appearing on the front of the 2008 Royal Welsh Show schedule . You never know, could be "Hello" magazine next! P.S. Don't forget to sort your sky/digital coverage so that you can receive live coverage of this summers show, click on S4C on the links page.

OFF TO A GOOD START
Despite the cold and wet April weather Heniarth Yeats, aka "Eddie" has started off well with a Reserve Youngstock Championship from a 1,2 &3 year old, mixed A& B class (!) at a local charity show and a win at the Forest of Dean Stallion Show, as well as securing his passage to Holland as the new property of Piet and Rhode Thielen of the Vennebos Stud. Lets hope he continues to have some fun for all his connections.

SEVERN BRIDGE TOLLS

Great news coming from the David Broome event centre in Chepstow is that on delving into the legislation to do with vehicles crossing the bridge; horseboxes with permanent living accommodation on board should be classed as Category 1 vehicles and cross for a fee of £5.30, rather that how they have been assessed up till now as a Category 3 vehicle and charged £15.90.

SHEM SCORES FIRST TIME OUT

If you haven't been looking at the www.rhosonponies.com website you may not have realised that Rhoson Shem qualified for the Royal International Horse Show, first time out. He's such a star. Congratulations to Jonathon Stevens and his family, a fantastic start to the season.

JUDGES CONFERENCE AT HARTPURY

As you can see Heniarth Quinnell was all wrapped up in his new Welsh Dragon pyjamas ready to attend the Judges day in the new Olympic arena at Hartpury, putting his best Welsh hoof forward following the Welsh rugby Grand Slam the day before. Yeh!
Pictured here with India is his Dutch owner, Rhode Thielen who had flown over to see him, joining her on the airplane were a gang of rugby enthusiasts dressed as "pimps and hookers" (?!?) The pilot turned off the engine at one point saying that the plane wouldn't take off until they all settled down. The following morning at 8a.m. the build up to the game was underway and the reporter on BBC Radio Wales said he was a little surprised to see "three Dutchmen walking along the River Taff, dressed as woman!" We think Rhode must have known them!

If anybody is interested in having a set of Welsh dragon cover all rug and hood pyjamas made for them, phone the maker, Christine Latter on 07967 106363 and she can talk you through the measurements etc.

MORE REVELATIONS REGARDING THE TRANSPORT LAWS (see below)

Thanks to Sallie Goggin, Penboeth Stud, who, by her own admission is like a "terrier" searching out the facts, the information handed out by the Welsh Office wasn't strictly correct according to DEFRA officials in London and Worcester.
The term "economic gain" refers to monies gained from a sale that exceed the cost of production of that animal, including its welfare, care etc. up to the point of sale. We all know that it costs more to produce a pony than it usually does to sell it. Furthermore "hobby" or "fancy" breeders are recognised as needing to sell surplus stock. Obviously, if you are trading as a "pony breeder" or a producer travelling animals for gain you will have to take the test, however it seems that if you are merely giving a friends pony a lift to that show the friend needs to travel in the vehicle with you or following directly behind. Prizemoney does not count as economic gain.
It does all appear to be ill advised but if you do decide to take the test be aware there appear to be different standards metered out ranging from "school exam conditions" to "a pint down the pub with lots of assistance". You should be offered training, and if so, subscribe to it, as questions could pertain to weights of vehicles, tachographs etc, even if you are simply towing a car and trailer.
I'm sure Sallie wouldn't mind clarifying this to anybody that cares to ask, simply outlining what she has found deep in the pages of DEFRA legislation.

Georgina Burton will now be the sole recipient of the Heniarth Trophy for standing 7th place in the National Pony Society Ridden Championships at Olympia 2007

TRANSPORT LAWS

At Richards suggestion the Welsh Office has asked the WPCS to place information on the new Transport Laws in force. Please read this as basically anyone turning up to a sale with a pony to sell should have certification or could face prosecution, regardless of whether the ponies are a business or a hobby. Apparently income received from prize-money is now not considered "economic gain." We all knew that!

www.wpcs.uk.com/society/transportwelfare.html
It will cost you £70+ and of course grants aren't available just for horses

STOP PRESS
It transpires from the NPS Office that another Junior rider deserves recognition for her placing at Olympia 2007 - this is Georgina Burton riding her mothers Highland, Xander of Mendick. Very well done and she shares the Heniarth Trophy with Robert Bright (as reported below)
ON PARADE
Heniarth Quinnel has been invited to represent the Ridden Mountain Pony at the W.P.C.S. Judges Conference at Hartpury College on March 29th. He's happy to sign autographs!

Heniarth Quinnel (above) ridden by India Latter, the property of Rhode Thielen. (centre) Powys Sprite owned by Harold & Yvette Zoet (far right) Brynodyn Savannah owned by Keith & Ann Hughes

OFF TO A FLYING START

Heniarth Quinnel got off to a great start this weekend by winning Novice, Intermediate and Open Heritage Championships this weekend as well as

siring Powys Sprite who was selected as an approved stallion at the National Stallion Show in Holland - it was also confirmed that his daughter out of Brynodyn Scarlett won a W.P.C.S Bronze medal as a yearling last year - a good young stallion already making a name for himself?

THIRD TIME LUCKY

Good old Roseisle Pandy Tudyr, at the age of twenty three, has been named as the winner of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society Performance Sire Rating award for Lead Rein/First Ridden. This is the third time he has won this trophy in its fourth year of presentation, the other time being won by Weston Bestman, great grand sire of Colne Turbo! Congratulations to his breeders John and Lindsay Milligan.

SHEEP JUMPING

What do you think of the show jumping sheep? Don't worry it's just a joke - we only do dressage with the Blue Faced Leicesters!!!

GOOD FOR JIMMY

This photo came via an American chat room of Heniarth Jimmy Dapps picking up the kids from school in Somerset, UK. We purchased Jimmy inside his mother, Lacy Judie  who was in a sorry state at Talybont Market, heavily in foal to Penual Jarydd. He was spotted on a South Western Stud visit as a foal by Jenny Chesher and  obviously has  a great life. Meanwhile Judie, by Gredington Calon Lan lived out her life, much loved by the Powys Stud in Holland

CONGRATULATIONS

A great honour was bestowed on Harold & Yvette Zoet at the recent Dutch Stallion Show, naming them as "Pony Breeders of the Year 2007." Of course their best pony is Heniarth Yabbadabadoo!

NIGHTS OUT

We enjoyed a very good night at the beginning of the month with the Clwyd Association in Ruthin, though at one point during the preceding week we wondered if we would get there at all, with so many roads flooded. We were made very welcome and got to see so many friends out of hibernation!

The following night we were invited to our National Pony Society Area 28 Dinner in Carmarthen and to our great surprise we were presented with the J. Sulwyn Jones Breeders Award Perpetual Challenge Trophy. It was a lovely gesture and the Chairwoman, Gill Jones, listed off each of the ponies that had been great ambassadors for the stud.

YOUNG ACHIEVER

Congratulations to Robert Bright riding Waxwing Rheel for winning the Heniarth Trophy,  in memory of Sunwillow Quest, for being the highest placed junior rider at the National Pony Society Mountain & Moorland Ridden Championship at Olympia just before Christmas. The trophy will be presented at the NPS annual general meeting in Winchester on March 15th.

Robert and Rheel placed a joint 11th place out of the thirty five native ponies present, though was only one of four junior riders in the final that does beg the question, "why aren't children riding these ponies?" Does it mean that a professional small adult has to be employed to be in with a shout?

AND MORE......

Congratulations to the Jordan and Abrahall family on their success with Rosmarche Heather by Heniarth Quip. Only starting under saddle since her foal was weaned in 2007 Heather has notched up some great wins, championships and supremes at B.S.P.S., N.P.S. and Welsh Area Shows this last autumn - now taking a rest before the Spring events start.

AND AGAIN........

We celebrate the Small Part-Bred Champion in the W.P.C.S. Performance awards with Fauldshope Duncan by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr, ridden by Angharad Harries. Duncan was bred and is still owned by Mrs McKercher in the Borders, though has been loaned to the Harries family near Carmarthen for a few years, enjoying all sorts of events from side-saddle to shepherding!

BIRTHDAY BABE
One year on and it's Peggys (Clothes Peg) birthday on New Year's Eve and here she is pictured with her great granny Toggle and great aunt Button, sporting her special line of Witney dog blanket which she quite likes now she's a bit older. A great little doglet, Peggy greets everybody with the same thrill, and of course always finds the most comfortable and warmest sitting spot. Her two most used nicknames are "Peggy the poop" for obvious reasons but shes not too bad and "Aqua dog" as she loves the big puddle that appears on the lawn after heavy rain; running thru it jumping and splashing - great for the sofa when she comes in at speed! We're mad but she gives us a lot of fun.

FOALS FOR 2008
We are expecting 7 foals by Quip in 2008 out of Yasmin,Quail,Quilt,Yipee-aye-yeah,Yum Yum,Yeeha Sheila and Holly. Georgina is in foal to Yarra Glen whilst Windflower and Quaint were rested .

SO THAT WAS 2007
Well here we are again, 2007 over and looking ahead. It has to be said that last year wasn't perhaps our finest but it wasn't bad. It was the year of endless rain and second place rosettes - not that we did many shows but for whatever reason we seemed unable to gain the top slot with as good a set of ponies as we've ever shown. We have to thank Simon Charlesworth for showing Yarra at the Bath &West and the Royal Welsh as he did such a good job. We were proud of them both. Yarra was fairly busy (for us) with visiting mares so that will be exciting to look forward to in 2008. However the "ridden boys" kept the flag flying for us, none more so than Heniarth Coron with Terry Thomas who battled through the mud to be Champion A or B under saddle at the Royal Welsh - something we missed as we couldn't face another day of slop at the show, but very rewarding for the Cheshmere Stud. That led to an unbelievable run of success with three Heniarth ponies gaining Horse of the Year Show qualifications in one week, with H. Quasar and H. Davey Crockett picking up good tickets. H.Quinnell also had an exciting early part of his novice season with India  and no doubt will have a big season in 2008 . It makes us so proud to think of them out there strutting their stuff. We were chuffed with Rhoson Shem and Jonathon Stevens who also got to HOYS, did a stunning, mannerly show and placed 2nd - yes, another second - but you have to put it in context - he'll be back!
For those of you that have visited here will know that our garage roof has been in decline for some time, but, no more, it's finally new and waterproof as is a "walk thru" that has been completed directly from the stables into the indoor school - fantastic, we never need get wet and windblown again and automatic water bowls around the yards to save endless carrying of buckets! Next project is to re-design our kitchen if we ever get organised.
Sadly we lost "Lilly" the Doberman whose constant shadow around the yard is still missed, as well as Quail's young filly foal, an absolute delight of a pony - we'll never know why. Though looking on we have an array of foals due, some of which will be sold as we have such a collection of young mares now - they grow up too quick - and of course they will be covered by Colne Turbo - possibly our moment of madness or planned advancement - time will tell. Quips Christmas was ruined when he saw the arrival of a Bellcrown carriage for him so he can now be driven at home - no excuses mate. As for Yarra - he "swans" around the place, not always looking white, as Inger Becker calls him, "her fairytale pony". Meirion enjoyed a trip to judge in Holland and I was able to spend three days in the South-West judging their Stud competition, before we both had a quick break in Portugal - we don't really do holidays. Wishing all our friends a happy new year, a good foaling and a prosperous new show season! We will be showing two yearling colts oh joy oh joy !

NEW GIRL IN TOWN......
We are very honoured to have Helen Myers top brood mare, Rosmarche Holly to come and live with us, as Helen has decided to disband her stud, but didn't want to sell Holly on the open market. In foal to Quip for 2008, she has bred so well to him in the past, they can live together and play "happy families". Holly is a past Royal Welsh and Royal of England winner and introduces the Penual Mark sire line to the stud.

ART ATTACK

Pictured above is Sarum Rembrandt by Heniarth Quinnell who has been doing some considerable winning for Stuart and Ann Franklin in the hands of Adam Fletcher, including winning a W.P.C.S. medal and taking the Supreme at Blaenavon Youngstock Show. We are so proud of our young stallions, Quinnell, Mr Milligan and Yarra Glenn who have left some top stock already.

HERE'S BEDROC

Heniarth Bedroc (Haverford Flight x Heniarth Quilt by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr) turned quite a few heads at Fayre Oaks but he eventually went home with Sue and Mike Harries of the Castlemead Stud for whom he was placed third at the National Foal Show. We think she could be having some fun next season. There are some more photographs on www.castlemeadstud.com

FAYRE OAKS 2007 - Well we certainly came away from Fayre Oaks Sales this year with a lot more than we bargained for in the shape of Colne Turbo. To set the record straight - we had seen him in the afternoon, liked him, though decided he would be too much money. So we left the sale. A few miles outside of Builth Wells we pulled the car over, discussed that he had a lot to offer us, got poor Meirion's father to go and let the dogs out and decided to return to the sale - via the Little Chef restaurant (everyone needs comfort food). The rest as you say is history and we are very pleased to have him home in our paddock. So despite those scurrilous gossip mongers on the internet - that is how it happened. When we purchased Sunwillow Quest back in 1994 for the then World record price we thought we were mad but her depth of breeding as paid dividends for us time and time again, lets hope Turbo does too. Incidentally, Turbo's dam line goes back to the Royal Welsh Champion, Rowfant Prima Ballerina who was out of a mare by Tanffynon Twm Shanco who was bred by Meirion's great great uncle! Pedigree and show photo is on the Youngstock page.
SALES - People never cease to amaze me at the sale but we were pleased to sell our two foals to the Castlemead and Penech Studs so hopefully they will have bright futures ahead of them

Colne Turbo in his play clothes - his show photo is on the Youngstock page!

ROSEISLE PANDY TUDYR now has four ponies qualified for the Horse of the Year Show in 2007 and has recently been awarded the Welsh Pony & Cob Society Lead Rein/First Ridden Sire Performance Award. Not to sure for what year and for what points but this is the second time he's been the recipient for his owner/breeders John and Lynsay Milligan.

Heniarth Yarra Glen, glad to be free of the Royal Welsh mud!!

THREE HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW QUALIFIERS IN A WEEK - AND THERE'S MORE NEWS ON WWW.RHOSONPONIES.COM
CORON TAKES HIS CROWN

We were sat at home on the Thursday of the Royal Welsh watching the "soup" conditions at the show only to get a surprise phone call to say that Heniarth Coron (Pendock Buttonhole x Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina by Revel Cello) had been named Champion Ridden A & B and therefore Horse of the Year Show qualifier. Fantastic! A really hard earned effort for Lorraine and Stuart and jockey, Terry Thomas, especially in such atrocious conditions. Hopefully they will have been able to remove all the mud by the time they leave for Birmingham, though may be leave a little on his girth for luck!!

ONLY A BABY!

We were as pleased for young Frances Pearson and her mother Cath Pickering when she won a huge Lead Rein class at their local Great Yorkshire Show on four year old Heniarth Quasar, (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) Little did we realise that

the following week he would be named Mini Champion at the North of England Finals from an entry of 56 ponies to take his Horse of the Year Show ticket. Led by David Marsden. We keep telling people to "buy them young from the breeder" which is exactly what Cath did when she purchased Quasar as a yearling.

WHAT MORE?

As breeders we felt pretty pleased with ourselves and then even more good news. On the first day of the National Pony Society Champions the John Family's Heniarth Davey Crockett (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Baledon Miss Dior) took their first ever Horse of the Year Show ticket partnered by four year old Jake. Davey is a firm family favourite and everybody is so proud of the "home produced" team.

Photo left: Heniarth Quasar, courtesy Horse & Hound

FIRST AND PROUD

Making the best out of the wet and cold at the Royal of England, Eyarth Windflower's foal, Heniarth Woodwind (left) won his class; we believe the first foal of Lemonshill Top Note to be shown, and he thoroughly enjoyed his big day out.

MORE SWEDISH SUCCESS

News from Nette Norstrum recently was that her homebred yearling filly by Heniarth Yarra Glen (above) went Supreme Champion at an All-Breed Show near to them, only to be followed up by taking the Supreme at a Welsh Breed Show, beating the imported Section C stallion, under Gunn Johansen. Looks like she'll have a bright future.

ROYAL WELSH NEWS

We will all remember the lunacy of trudging thru the mud at the Royal Welsh of 2007 but we were all mad enough to keep going. We were pleased with our results. Sixth in the Junior Mares with Yippee-aye Yeah, third with Yeeha Sheila in the three year old class and third with Yarra Glen in the Junior stallions - all the progeny of Sunwillow Yasmin. It must be nearly twelve years continuously that we have come away from the Royal Welsh with a red rosette in either Mountain Ponies, Section B, Section C, Shetlands or Ridden but this year it was not to be - however Heniarth Coron came thru for us........

BEST HOOF FORWARD

We were delighted with the way our Georgina looked and went at the Three Counties Show to win the Novice Brood Mare class on her first in-hand outing since she was Champion at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair as a three year old, she has of course been to the Horse of the Year Show twice as a lead rein and as a first ridden so this trotting up and down on a bit of rope was a bit of a doddle really! Highlight of the day was meeting her young jockeys again, Poppy and Jess - I'm sure she remembered them.

PROUD OF THE FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Second to Georgina at the Three Counties Show was another Heniarth Quip daughter, Kathy and Joanna Sheils Dukes Hill Meringue. Heniarth Quinnell sired Brynodyn Savannah for Keith and Ann Hughes who was third in a good yearling class having taken the same place at the Bath & West, but also 1st & Reserve Champion at Devon County - the first filly from Brynodyn Scarlet who we showed from here so successfully nearly ten years ago now!
Also Rod Lewis' new Heniarth Quip yearling filly Rosmarche Holly Bough won at Aberystwyth on her debut outing taking the Reserve Youngstock Championship.
Congratulations to all who keep the flag flying!

EURO - VISION

As our tribute to Eurovision we are proud to show you these lovely pictures of Damgaard Little Wirginia - a filly foal born in Denmark by Heniarth Yarra Glen. Breeder, Annette Damgaard drove the mare Sunnyhill Little Wendy (Sunnyhill Little Fella x Sunnyhill Gay Wand) over 600 kilometers from Denmark to Sweden to have her covered and was rewarded with this filly to join the one she already has by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr that she purchased in utero via Fayre Oaks Sale some three years ago. Yarra now has progeny in Denmark, Sweden, South Africa, Scotland and England - though none as yet in Wales! However, he's greatly enjoying rectifying that situation!

ROYAL CONNECTIONS

Waxwing Milk Tray, a two year old filly by Yarra Glen out of a Pandy Tudyr mare, owned by Henry Hird, won at the Royal Windsor Horse Show within sight of HRH The Queen. Let's hope she rushed backed to the castle to look up the fillies breeding in her collection of Dr Wynne books!!

NO SHOWS
Unfortunately Richard didn't make it to either Lampeter or Glanusk due to mares waxing up on the morning of the shows but Meirion took the Section B's to Glanusk and had a good day - photo's on www.rhosonponies.com  STOP PRESS - Sunwillow Georgina has had a smart colt foal by Haverford Flight; may be you'll meet him at the shows this summer?

WINTER SUCCESS

Molly Moore riding Alex Rothwell's and Nicola Curbishley's

Hengwys Cymro by Heniarth Quip, winner of the Winter Restricted Heritage Lead Rein and Overall RESTRICTED MINI HERITAGE CHAMPION at this years British Show Pony Society's Winter Championships. Well done to his breeders, Robert & Susan Buchanan and family

Courtesy B.S.P.S. Area 2A

SUNWILLOW YASMINS COLT

By Heniarth Mr Milligan, photographed here at six days old and already very cheeky - fingers crossed he will be as successful as his illustrious parents - by a Royal Welsh Reserve Male Champion and out of a Royal Welsh Reserve Female Champion, can't be too bad?

HENIARTH QUILTS COLT

By Haverford Flight, photographed here at about ten hours old and already quite proud. His parents have virtually been unshown but that doesn't mean to say he hasn't got designs on rosettes. Out of the same mare as Simon Charlesworth's Heniarth Bedlam

ANOTHER GOOD DAY
Heniarth Quinnel had another great day at the Carmarthenshire Association Spring Show when he was named Novice Champion and then Reserve Supreme Ridden of the Show - his first outdoor event - what a little star in the making.

It was great that Quinnel came back under saddle as he was Champion in-hand here as a three year old in 2005. Meanwhile Heniarth Yeeha Sheila (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Yasmin) made her season debut and you guessed it  - she came second - we can't seem to get off that slot yet, though the "Andy" part-bred, Fauldshope Duncan won the part-bred ridden class and the Quip gelding, Glynhaul Brocato was Reserve for the Millcroft gelding championship. However it was our charge, Rhoson Del that had a great show ending up Supreme Champion Yearling for John and Glenys Davies, a title that both Yeeha Sheila and Yum Yum have both won in the past. More pictures on www.rhosonponies.com Also congratulations are due again to the Whisperdale Stud who were Reserve Champion Millcroft Gelding Champion with Heniarth Cockatoo

BOYS DAY OUT

India and Heniarth Quinnel (left -Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Quest) kept the flag flying at the Forest of Dean Stallion Show by being selected as Reserve Champion Ridden Stallion whilst Heniarth Yarra Glen (Right- Nerwyn Cadno x Sunwillow Yasmin) had to be content with two seconds. It's one way to spend your Easter weekend!!

GREAT NEWS
It seems that young Heniarth Quasar behaved impeccably at the B.S.P.S. Winter Championships to stand fifth in the final line-up in the evening performance. A great result, especially considering he's only been out a few times. Also the Roseisle Pandy Tudyr son, Mynyddtarren The Marksman was Reserve Champion for the W.P.C.S. Medal and Supreme Yearling Champion at his show too. Great results and congratulations to all involved!!!
NEWS FROM THE NORTH OF ENGLAND

Great news from Cath Pickering and her daughter Frances who let us know that young Heniarth Quasar (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Sunwillow Quest) made a great start to the year by being selected as Novice and Open Mountain & Moorland Champions at their first show; now they're all set to make the trip to the Winter Championships. Fingers crossed and very well done! (Right) - purchased from us as a two year old.

Meanwhile Sally and Anoushka Potter are thrilled with her two young geldings, Heniarth Cockatoo (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Heniarth Quail) who's now two and the yearling, Heniarth Tutti Frutti (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Heniarth Quaint), both destined for ridden careers with her grand-children - that's the way to buy them! (Far right)

PEG THE PUPPY

Let me introduce you to our latest addition, Peg. She is in fact a great grand-daughter of our own Toggle and a great niece to Button. She was bred by the John Family who bought her mom from us some nine years ago! To ensure the line continues, we couldn't say no! She's a good pup and hasn't wrecked too much yet! As you can see the other girls "tolerate" her!.

MAKING A GOOD START

Young Heniarth Quinnel (Gwyn Rhosyn Frenin x Sunwillow Quest) is making a good start in his ridden career with India Latter, having already qualified for the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships and placed in his first dressage test, let's hope he can be as succesful as his brother, Quip. His two filly foals, now yearlings, here at Heniarth are growing well and very pleasing.

CONGRATULATIONS - to Inger Becker for being made an Honorary Life member of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society

MEANWHILE............

On the other side of the country Sal Keswani's four year old Quip son, Sunwillow Jubilee has made a great start to his ridden career in the hands of Rebecca Jarvis - all from the same family that brought you top ridden ponies such as Whitsand Warrior and Springbourne Crusader, both going immediately back to Sunwillow Bernina

TRIP TO THE DUTCH STALLION SHOW

Despite several cancellations and then delays we were able to fly out of Cardiff Airport, en route to Amsterdam, leaving behind what little snow we had in Wales and the deluge that was to follow.
We hadn't been to to Stallion Show for several years so we got to see some new ponies, some we liked, others we didn't care for, but as ever, trying to read the official Jury of three was as difficult as ever. It was nice to see Vechtzichts Hywel take the Welsh Championship on his last public appearance for Harold and Yvette Zoet, only to see his possible successor take his rightful place and the Overseas W.P.C.S. Medal in the shape of Vennebos Pretty Gamble, (Knodishall Geraint x Nerwyn Pert by Nerwyn Cadno) purchased by Harold as a foal from breeder Rhode Thielen. Photos can be seen on both the Ysselvliedt and Vennebos websites via our "Links" page.
Amongst the Section B's Alfred Askes six year old Hogeland's Nandor (Eyarth Caradog x Thornberry Cameo by Thornberry Gamekeeper) gave a great show to stand Champion. His free, lengthy stride would look great under saddle and would dramatically show up some of these tied in, stilted kidders that get hailed as great movers in the UK - enough, I'll get off the soap box!!!!
Needless to say we ate too much, we did stay sober and we enjoyed some excellent company.

"Lilly Savage"

Lilly the Doberdog finally succumbed to her heart condition and left her beloved farm to hunt rabbits in the sky. She was a good dog and a good friend.

SHE'S BACK - GWYN RHOSYN CELLIDH

Out of the blue we had a phone call from the Albinson family offering us Gwyn Rhosyn Cellidh aka, "Molly", aka "Mrs Slocombe" back as a brood mare - we jumped at the chance.
Mrs Slocombe came to join us as a foal when we collected her sire Coed Coch Rhion and dam Gwyn Rhosyn Cellina by Revel Cello, from the Western Isles of Scotland. She was big and fat and looked like she had a "blue rinse" - hence the name. She is the last but one foal of Rhion and a sister to Heniarth Coron and Canoodle and is featured on the homepage winning the Supreme Yearling Championship at the West Midland Stallion Show.

Since then she has been to Horse of the Year Show four times as a Working Hunter Pony and as a First Ridden, she's pictured below centre on the day she was Youngstock Champion at Pembrokeshire County. Her mother went to Per Aschan's Molstaburg Stud in Sweden where she too became a firm favourite.

As you can see from the above photo she seems to welcome being "home", lets hope she'll take to being a valuable member of the brood mare team.

OLYMPIA SUCCESS

Despite the fact that no mention has been made of it anywhere else - we would like to salute young Alice Barr for being the first winner of the "Heniarth Trophy - in memory of Sunwillow Quest" for the Highest placed Junior Rider at the National Pony Society/Baileys Horse Feeds Ridden Mountain and Moorland Finals at Olympia just before Christmas 2006, riding the Shetland, Southley Red Ember. The trophy will be presented to her at the NPS Annual Meeting in February. We felt it was a nice gesture to encourage the junior riders competing against the professional adults. Well done Alice, and you beat your sister!!!

AU REVOIR MR.MILLIGAN

Of course in welcoming home Yarra Glenn we had to say goodbye to Mr. Milligan who had given us all such a fantastic two years since he returned to Wales. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect him to do so well in the show-ring or the breeding paddock, so fingers crossed for his 2007 foals, he had some lovely visiting mares from some discerning breeders - those that missed out will regret it!!. Many thanks to his proud owners, Inger, Johann, Tina and Kia for allowing Milligan to come home and for taking such good care of Yarra

COMING HOME TO ROOST

It's been great to welcome home two of our young stallions. Yarra Glen has returned from two years in Sweden with Inger Becker, where he has left some lovely foals and Rhode Thielen has allowed Quinell  to live with India Latter (see right) where he's hopefully going to come out under saddle once he's recovered from the embarrassment of being dressed up like a reindeer !!!!

ANOTHER GOOD ANDY FOAL

Clive & Corrine Mahoney were proud of their colt foal, Mynyddtarren The Marksman by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr who recently went 2nd, Reserve Champion and then 2nd Reserve Supreme against all breeds, turning the tables on the colt that had beaten him earlier. Good luck in 2007 for his new owner, Rosie Mackenzie.

SHOWINGS OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR

As you can see Rhoson Shem is more than pleased to be home from the Horse of the Year Show and out in the field without any hoods and blankets. Once again he put up a great performance to stand ninth out of the fourteen forward in the pony section of the Cuddy; some we felt deserved to stand above him on the day, others most certainly didn't - but hey, that's showing and no doubt we'll be back for more!

LATEST ARRIVAL FROM THE NORTH

When Richard was judging at the Flint and Denbigh Show this summer, we spied a stylish young colt foal out of a very lovely mare in the hands of John and Mair Jones of the Nantdywyll Stud. He won his class that day. Always on the look out for promising young colts to run on, a deal was struck, and now we have taken delivery of Nantdywyll Fflint as our latest project. His pedigree is on the Youngstock page of this website that ties into a lot of the lines that we have so we'll see what comes of it - watch this space! Pictured below mid-summer with his dam Colgele Ffiona by Coed Coch Penadur and of course, John "Hir".

FAYRE OAKS 2006

Well it's over again for another year and we were pleased to have sold each of our entries to good homes, albeit for less money than we had hoped but they made their reserves and were sold at them. Why oh why won't people bid in the ring rather than come lamenting to the pen afterwards saying, "I didn't think you'd sell her at that...." If we take a pony to a sale it's there to be sold, not for a pose. Never mind, we've had good years and bad and who knows, we may get £1000 bids taken next year!!!! Congratulations to those that were successful new owners, we wish them the best of luck.

HIGH SCORE SWEDES

News from Kristin and Sven Fagerskjold from Sweden was that their Eckbacken Smilla by Heniarth Mr.Milligan (right) was awarded a diploma recently at the National Show with a high score of 43 out of 50, with 10 marks out of 10 for type. Her sister, also by Milligan, Malby Millie Mint, (left) was placed second in the class, also receiving a diploma with 40 points, for delighted owner/breeder, Nette Norstrum. A great result and very promising for the future of Milligans UK stock.

NEVER TOO YOUNG.....

Heniarth Davey Crockett (Roseisle Pandy Tudyr x Baledon Miss Dior) is on a great run of success at the moment. Having already reported that he won a huge Tiny Tots class at the N.P.S. Malvern partnered by three year old Jake John, the pair then went on to win a big and valuable class at Pembrokeshire County, qualifying for the N.P.S. Championships in 2007. Not content with that they won two championships at the N.P.S. Area 28 Show and then the Supreme Show Champion at the end of the day. A fantastic result. Apparently the judge told him, "your pony trots round the ring with a smile on his face!"

NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY SHOW

Windflower took the breed championship and in doing so won the very lovely Princess Margaret Trophy that alternates around the nine native breeds each year - Richard having won it in 1984 with the Cob mare, Liddle Arietta. She also put her best hoof forward to stand in the final six out of eighteen forward in the Cuddy Horse of the Year Show qualifier.
Heniarth Davey Crockett also headed a huge Tiny Tots lead rein class in great style.

NATIONAL WELSH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Heniarth Cupcake by Quip won a big yearling filly class at the Nationals under Australian judge, Sue-Ellen Dean of the Llanfairbryn, whilst Tryfel Dion, also by Quip was runner-up in the Rhydspence Championship for the Cobley Family. The winner, Cledwyn Red Rose is safely in foal to Quip's brother. Heniarth Quinnell - Keep it in the family!!!

THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW 2006

What another fantastic show? Never did we imagine what was in store as we pulled out of the yard at 4a.m. Our hearts were in our mouths as we led Windflower down to the ring to defend her unbeaten Royal Welsh record and all to soon she had made history by winning six times and three Female Championships. Shem's early morning exuberance calmed and tears were shed as he was pulled forward to take the Male Championship and then the overall Coed Coch trophy, a lifetimes ambition fulfilled for Meirion's parents, John and Glenys.
Back to the lorry and a quick change to groom for Quip in the Private Driving who has you can see from the photo below he put his best hoof forward to stand 5th, placing the best Mountain pony in excruciating heat.
Then the Cuddy Horse of the Year Show qualifier and the Supreme Show Championship in the early evening. Shem settled well, posed as only he can do and amidst the dust and gathering parade - HE WON!
Many thanks for all the cards and messages of congratulation - another memory to cherish.

A HOME VISIT

We had a lovely day recently when young riders, Poppy and Jess Duncalf came down to see Sunwillow Georgina (photo left) who they showed under saddle last season - the main reason being that now she has a filly foal at foot. As you can see Georgina showed interest when there was a possibility of carrot treats and I think the girls were very proud of the latest addition that after all had already been to the Horse of the Year Show with them!
